Chandra Thomas Adolphus Schaffter (born 3 April 1930) is a Sri Lankan businessman and former cricket administrator. He played first-class cricket for Ceylon in the 1950s, and founded Sri Lanka's first major Sri Lankan-owned life insurance company, Janashakthi, in 1994. In September 2018, he was one of 49 former Sri Lankan cricketers felicitated by Sri Lanka Cricket, to honour them for their services before Sri Lanka became a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Early life and sporting career

Chandra Schaffter was born in 1930 to Adolphus Jeshuran Schaffter, a school master, and his wife Alice Schaffter. His mother died when he was two, and his father when Chandra was 11. [3] Schaffter boarded at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, representing the school First XI for several years as an opening bowler. [4]

He played three first-class and two one-day matches for Ceylon between 1953 and 1958. His best performance came in the Gopalan Trophy match against Madras in Madras in 1953–54, when he opened the bowling and took 3 for 28 and 3 for 71 and the Ceylon team won by an innings and 108 runs. [5]

He also represented Sri Lanka at hockey. [6]

Cricket administration and sponsorship

Schaffter managed the Sri Lankan cricket teams that toured England in 1991 [7] and 2002. [8] His company Janashakthi sponsored Test cricket in Sri Lanka, employed a number of prominent cricketers, and financed and published the first history of Sri Lankan cricket, The Janashakthi Book of Sri Lanka Cricket, 1832–1996 by S. S. Perera. [9]

Business career

Schaffter began work in the insurance business in 1952 as a clerk with the Ceylon Insurance Company. [4] He later joined Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. Ltd, and then Carson Cumberbatch, where he became manager of the insurance department. In 1973 he and his wife Lilani moved to Madras, where their three sons and a daughter completed their schooling, and he worked as an insurance consultant. [10]

He returned to Sri Lanka in the 1980s and continued to work in insurance. He was instrumental in persuading the national government to allow private insurance companies to operate again. [4]

In 1994 Schaffter singlehandedly set up the Janashakthi insurance company. In 2001 and 2002 Janashakthi bought out the National Insurance Corporation. He worked to improve road safety in Colombo, and after the 2004 tsunami he championed the highest payout of any insurer in Sri Lanka, beyond the payment of sums assured, considerably in excess of the company's liabilities. [4] Janashakthi handled many things other companies would not cover at the time, such as insurance against terrorism and insurance against AIDS. [6]

Family

Schaffter's sons Prakash and Dinesh also played first-class cricket. [11] [12] Prakash followed his father into the insurance industry, becoming chairman of Janashakthi, and also served Sri Lanka Cricket as an administrator. [13]

Cricket was introduced to Sri Lanka in the first quarter of the 19th century, following colonisation of the island by the British. The earliest known match was recorded in 1832 and the earliest first-class one in 1926. The national team has played Test cricket from 1982. The national team has achieved international success by winning the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. Cricket is played nationwide with Test venues in Colombo, Galle, Kandy and Moratuwa. The country's most notable players include Aravinda de Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga, Rangana Herath, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Kumar Sangakkara and Chaminda Vaas. Administration and governance are performed by Sri Lanka Cricket, which was founded in July 1922 as the Ceylon Cricket Association (CCA). The main domestic competition is the Premier Trophy which attained first-class status in 1988.

The M. J. Gopalan Trophy was an annual first-class cricket competition played between Ceylon and Madras between 1952–53 and 2007–08.

James Daniel 'Dan' Piachaud is a former Sri Lankan first-class cricketer. Piachaud studied in England at the University of Oxford, where he made 52 appearances in first-class cricket — the joint-highest amount — and took nearly 150 wickets as an off break bowler. He also played county cricket for Hampshire and first-class cricket for Ceylon.

Dandeniya Premachandra de Silva is a former Ceylonese cricketer. He was a middle order batsman who represented Ceylon in first-class cricket from 1962 to 1968.

The Ceylon cricket team toured India in December 1964 and January 1965. Ceylon did not then have Test status, but three four-day unofficial Tests were played, India winning 2–1. The tour also included five other first-class matches.

Janashakthi Insurance PLC is an insurance company in Sri Lanka. The company was incorporated in 1992 and its operations were commenced in 1994. Janashakthi Insurance became the first company to specialise in life insurance in Sri Lanka. Janashakthi Insurance became a public company when the company was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 2008. The company was a constituent of the S&P Sri Lanka 20 Index in 2016. Janashakthi Insurance is ranked 85th in LMD 100, an annual list of listed companies by revenue in Sri Lanka. Janashakthi Insurance is known for its long-term patronage of sports, especially cricket.

Dinesh Schaffter was a Sri Lankan businessman, philanthropist and former first-class cricketer. He was a renowned businessman and served as the director of Janashakthi Group PLC and also served as managing director of First Capital Holdings. He died in December 2022 leading to speculations and rumours regarding the nature of his death. In November 2023, the court concluded that he was murdered.
