Chandradeo Prasad Verma (21 January 1921 [2] – 30 April 2005) [3] was a politician who was elected to the Lok Sabha,the lower house of Parliament of India from the Arrah,Bihar in 1977,1980 and 1996. He was the Union Minister of State for Rural Areas and Employment. He was earlier Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and a Cabinet minister in Bihar. [4] [5] [6] [7]
Verma was a member of Koeri community. [8] [9] He participated in Indian independence movement and was also involved in the labour strike of 1940 in South Bihar Sugar Mills at Bihta (Patna) under the leadership of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati. He was put behind the bars for his involvement in this movement. He also took participation in Quit India Movement of 1942 and was arrested by the British authorities in 1943. During this period,he underwent two years of rigorous imprisonment in Central Jail,Patna,Gaya and Phoolwari Sharif camp. He also involved himself in the revolutionary activities after release from jail in 1945. [10]
During this period,when the struggle for indian independence was on its peak,he made attempts to blast the Bikram Airport (Patna) in order to defy the colonial rule. He was made president of Bihar State Leather Industries Association,Patna,from 1957 to 1984;and of Bihar State Telephone Employees Union,Trade Union Patna for 1958-62 after independence of India. Verma was the founder,secretary of G.J. College,Rambagh at Bihta,Patna,in 1957. He also served as president of Jai Prakash Ashram,Paliganj,Patna. Despite holding a number of offices,he was again involved in 1974 Total Revolution,which was started by Jayprakash Narayan against the authoritarian rule of Indira Gandhi government from Bihar. Verma also struggled for the cause of low-income groups and lower strata of society and was associated with Bihar State Class IV Employees Association,from 1969 to 1984. As a leader of workers he was a participant in Fatuha-Islampur and Arrah-Sasaram Light Railway Employees Union from 1984 to 1985. In the later years of his life,he became a member of Mahatma Phule Trust,Patna and remained associated with it till 1990. He was also a member of Bihar Rajya Swatantrata Sainani Sangathan,Patna in 1992,the organisation representing the freedom fighters who participated in indian war of independence from the state of Bihar. Verma was close to Jagdeo Prasad,during initial year of his life. He is said to have persuaded Prasad to read various political ideologies and philosophers in order to work for improvement of social status of Dalits. Being persuaded by him,Prasad followed him and later emerged as the emancipator of the lower castes through the politics of socialism. He even founded his own Shoshit Samaj Dal,when he developed ideological conflicts with the leadership of Samyukta Socialist Party. [11]
He was the editor of a journal brought out by Bihar Rajya Swantrata Sainani Sangathan and also worked as an Assistant Editor and Secretary in Janata a Hindi daily published from Patna during 1951–52. Later,he became the Chief Editor of Janata which became a weekly from 1952 and remained so till 1957. He also fought against social injustice and supported the cause of socially oppressed people. Verma worked for the interests of the backwards and the Dalits and took up the case of 384 civilian employees of Air-Force-2 B.R.D. stationed at Gwalior. As a leader of trade unionists,he actively pursued the cause of Arrah-Sasaram Light Railway and Fatuha Islampur Martins Light-Railway employees for their regularisation,who were facing the threat of eviction due to government policies. Ram Vilas Paswan was an Indian politician from Bihar and the Cabinet Minister of Consumer Affairs,Food and Public Distribution in the first and second Modi ministries. Paswan was also the president of the Lok Janshakti Party,nine-times Lok Sabha member and two-time Rajya Sabha MP. He started his political career as member of Samyukta Socialist Party and was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1969. Later,Paswan joined Lok Dal upon its formation in 1974,and became its general secretary. He opposed the emergency,and was arrested during this period. He first entered the Lok Sabha in 1977,as a Janata Party member from Hajipur constituency,and was elected again in 1980,1989,1991,1996,1998,1999,2004 and 2014.
Raja Bindheshwari Prasad Mandal was a scion of the erstwhile Murho Estate and an Indian politician who chaired the Mandal Commission. Mandal came from a rich Yadav Royal family from Madhepura in Northern Bihar. He served as the seventh Chief Minister of Bihar in 1968,but he resigned after 30 days. As a parliamentarian,he served as the chairman of the Second Backward Classes Commission,popularly known as the Mandal Commission. The commission's report mobilized a segment of the Indian population known as "Other Backward Classes" (OBCs) and initiated a fierce debate on policies related to underrepresented and underprivileged groups in Indian politics.
Shri Krishna Singh (Sinha) (21 October 1887 –31 January 1961),also known as Shri Babu,was the first chief minister of the Indian state of Bihar (1946–61). Except for the period of World War II,Sinha was the chief minister of Bihar from the time of the first Congress Ministry in 1937 until his death in 1961. Along with the Desh Ratna Rajendra Prasad and Bihar Vibhuti Anugrah Narayan Sinha (A.N. Sinha),Sinha is regarded among the 'Architects of Modern Bihar'. He also led the Dalit entry into the Baidyanath Dham temple (Vaidyanath Temple,Deoghar),which reflected his commitment towards the upliftment and social empowerment of the Dalits. He was the first chief minister in the country to abolish the zamindari system. He underwent different terms of imprisonment for a total of about eight years in British India. Sinha's mass meetings brought hordes of people to hear him. He was known as Bihar Kesari for his lionlike roars when he rose to address the masses. His close friend and eminent Gandhian Bihar Vibhuti A.N. Sinha in his essay Mere Shri Babu wrote that,"Since 1921,the History of Bihar has been the history of the life of Shri Babu".
Shahabad district or Arrah district,headquartered at Arrah was a Bhojpuri speaking district in western Bihar,India,making the western border of Bihar with Uttar Pradesh. In 1972,the district was split into two districts:Bhojpur and Rohtas. Kaimur District was carved out from Rohtas in 1991 and Buxar District from Bhojpur in 1992. Historically,the geographic area was the eastern part of the Mahajanapada Kingdom of Kashi,with the Son River separating it from Magadh.
Raghuvansh Prasad Singh was an Indian socialist politician. In the Lok Sabha,he represented the Vaishali constituency of Bihar and was the national vice president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal political party. He was one of the senior most politicians in India as a people's representative in the legislature for four decades from 1977.
Although India is a parliamentary democracy,the country's politics has become dynastic or with high level of nepotism,possibly due to the absence of party organizations,independent civil-society associations which mobilize support for a party,or centralized financing of elections. The dynastic phenomenon is present at the national,state,regional,and district level. The Nehru–Gandhi family has produced three Indian prime ministers,and family members have largely led the Congress party since 1978. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also has several dynastic leaders. In addition to the major national parties,other national and regional parties such as Shiromani Akali Dal,Shiv Sena,Samajwadi Party,Rashtriya Janata Dal,Janata Dal Secular,Jharkhand Mukti Morcha,Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam,Kerala Congress,Jammu &Kashmir National Conference,Indian Union Muslim League,AIMIM,and the Nationalist Congress Party are all dominated by families,mostly those of the party founders.
Basawon Singh or Basawan Singh also known as Basawon Sinha,was an Indian independence activist and a campaigner for the rights of the underprivileged,industrial labourers and agricultural workers.
Chandreshwar Prasad Thakur. also known as C. P. Thakur,is a former member of Rajya Sabha,a former minister in the Government of India,a physician and a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was a cabinet minister from 1999 to 2004 in the BJP government.
Ram Kripal Yadav is an Indian politician and a member of the 17th Lok Sabha from the Pataliputra parliamentary constituency in Bihar. He was a member of Rashtriya Janata Dal and was a close confidant of Lalu Yadav. Later he joined Bharatiya Janata Party. He was first a mayor in Bihar,and later the Minister of State for Rural Development in central cabinet in Delhi from 2014 to 2019.
Bali Ram Bhagat was an Indian politician and member of the Indian National Congress (INC). He has served as Member of Parliament (MP) in Lok Sabha representing Arrah from 1952 to 1977 and 1984 to 1989. Bhagat has also served as the 6th Speaker of the Lok Sabha and 13th Foreign Minister of India.

He was the Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Narasimha Rao Government.

Sumitra Devi was an Indian National Congress politician from Bihar. She was first elected to Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1952 from Jagdishpur. In 1963,she became the first woman cabinet minister of Bihar. She was also the first Bihari woman to become a cabinet minister in Government of India in 1977. Devi was born in Munger district on September 25,1922,and died on February 3,2001. She has served 4 times as MLA of Arrah from 1962 to 1969 and 1972 to 1980. Apart from this,she was also elected once from Piro Assembly constituency in 1957. In 1977,she participated in Indian General elections from Balia Lok Sabha constituency as an independent candidate,but she was defeated.
Ajit Kumar Mehta was member of 6th Lok Sabha from Samastipur in Bihar State,India. He was elected to 7th,11th and 12th Lok Sabha from Samastipur. Before joining active politics,Mehta was an educationist,working as professor at Birla Institute of Technology Mesra. In his early age,he also worked as an Indian independence activist. Mehta was a member of socialist camp during Indian freedom struggle and had remained an active part of Azad Dasta during Quit India movement.
