Since launching in 1982, [1] British terrestrial television broadcaster Channel 4 has used the same logo consisting of nine differently-shaped blocks forming the numeral '4'. In its history, Channel 4 has been known for using bold and innovative ident packages and has been widely regarded as influential in the television presentation industry.
The original idents for Channel 4 launched on 2 November 1982 and were designed by Martin Lambie-Nairn and his partner Colin Robinson, in association with Bo Gehring Aviation of Los Angeles. [2] While not the first computer-generated idents on British television, [3] they were the first UK channel idents made using advanced computer generation with abstract shapes forming up in multiple ways to create the numeral 4. The Blocks were also the first UK Television ident package, with multiple form-ups for the logo. [4] Before Channel 4, virtually all television stations in the United Kingdom used a single ident to identify the channel.
The music accompanying the ident was called "Fourscore" and was composed by David Dundas; it was later released as a single alongside a B-side, "Fourscore Two", although neither reached the UK charts. [5] On 2 November 1992, "Fourscore" was replaced by new music.

On 11 October 1996, Channel 4 commissioned Tomato Films to revamp the "4", which resulted in the "Circles" idents showing four white circles forming transparently over various scenes, with the "4" logo depicted in white in one of the circles, which formed up with a ripple effect, distorting the film. Creation of the idents by Tomato Films is rumoured to have been so difficult, that both Channel 4 and Tomato Films ended the collaboration with only the initial idea of a refreshed logo. [4]
The idents were refreshed on 12 October 1998, with the 4 in a single circle, and the blur effect being simplified, although this was too similar to the look of Channel 5 at the time. [4]
On 2 April 1999, Spin redesigned the logo to feature in a single square which sat on the right-hand side of the screen, whilst various stripes would move along from left to right, often lighting the squared “4” up. Like the previous “Circles” idents from 1996 (which was made by Tomato Films), the initial idents introduced with the stripes would be interspersed with various scenes potentially related to the upcoming programme. A later variation of the package used more abstract interpretations of the initial striped look launched on 1 January 2002.
The logo was made three-dimensional again on 31 December 2004 when it was depicted in filmed scenes that show the blocks forming the “4” logo for less than a second before the action moves away again. The Channel 4 logo was altered, with it appearing in trailer stings as being formed in negative space. An updated graphics package was launched with new idents on 22 October 2010.
On 29 September 2015 at 9 pm, the Ambient Blocks were replaced with a new series of idents, directed by Jonathan Glazer, that deconstructed the Channel 4 logo into its constituent elements. During this package, the Channel 4 logo was downplayed on-screen, in favour of bumps and stings featuring the blocks apart, rather than as a formed logo. The four idents featured the blocks as crystalline geodes that are sought after, protected, or studied under a microscope. [6] The heads of Channel 4's in-house creative team, and, stated: “The idents present the blocks as kryptonite-like. They tell the story of their origin and how they impact the world around them. Just as Channel 4 does. It is a story that we shall build on.” [7]
On 31 October 2017 at 8 pm, the initial Glazer designed idents were replaced with a new look by Dougal Wilson, in association with 4Creative, and the MPC Team. This look reconstituted the blocks to form a metallic giant. This ident set featured a newly recorded version of Fourscore, played on acoustic guitar. [8] Four months ago, the trailer stings and bumpers were carried over from the initial look, albeit with the Channel 4 logo featuring as the blocks formed on the screen.
From 2 November 2022, elements of the new look were soft launched, being added to the rotation of Channel 4 branding, replacing bumpers and trailer stings with a new set that featured a green (initially white) Channel 4 logo in gradient-coloured 3D spaces. Elements of the new look continue to be added until the official unveiling of the new idents at 18:55 BST on 14 June 2023, with a short film featuring all of the 25 films, narrated with a specially commissioned poem by John Joseph Holt. Until November 2011, Channel Television was one of four ITV companies independent from ITV plc alongside the two STV regions in Scotland and UTV in Northern Ireland. The station has been owned by ITV plc since 2012 and the licence was transferred to ITV Broadcasting Limited in March 2017.
BBC Prime was the BBC's general entertainment TV channel in Europe, Middle East, Africa, South Asia and Asia Pacific from 30 January 1995 until 11 November 2009, when it was replaced by BBC Entertainment.
Film4 is a British free-to-air public broadcast television channel owned by Channel Four Television Corporation launched on 1 November 1998, devoted to broadcasting films. Its standard-definition channel is available on Freeview and Freesat platforms. its high-definition variant is offered free on Freely, and as a pay television service on satellite and cable.
The BBC One Balloon idents were a series of idents used on the British TV channel BBC One from 4 October 1997 to 28 March 2002. The balloon theme replaced the computer-generated spinning globe that had been used as the main ident on the channel since 1991, and marked a radical departure from the traditional spinning globe which had been the channel's primary identity since 1963. It launched on the same day as a BBC-wide rebrand, and thus the new idents also carried the new BBC logo. The channel's name also changed from BBC1 to BBC One. This was the last ident set used by the channel when it fully closed down; the last proper closedown took place in the evening hours of 8 November 1997. Starting the following evening, BBC News 24 would broadcast on BBC One during closedown, which continues today.
The BBC One "Rhythm & Movement" idents were a set of on-screen channel identities designed by Lambie-Nairn and used on BBC One from 29 March 2002 to 7 October 2006. They replaced the balloon idents, and spelled the end of the much recognised globe identity by the BBC, which had been used in various ways since 1963.
More4 is a British free-to-air television channel, owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The channel launched on 10 October 2005. Its programming mainly focuses on lifestyle and documentaries, as well as foreign dramas.
The history of BBC television idents begins in the early 1950s when the BBC first displayed a logo between programmes to identify its service. As new technology has become available, these devices have evolved from simple still black and white images to the sophisticated full colour short films seen today. With the arrival of digital services in the United Kingdom, and with them many more new channels, branding is perceived by broadcasters to be much more important, meaning that idents need to stand out from the competition.

The logo of the BBC has been a brand identity for the corporation and its work since the 1950s in a variety of designs. Until the introduction of a logo in 1958, the corporation had relied on its coat of arms for official documentation and correspondence, although it rarely appeared onscreen. With the increased role of television for the BBC in the 1960s, particularly after the foundation of the ITV network, the corporation used its logo to increase viewer familiarity and to standardise its image and content. The logo has since been redesigned a number of times, most recently in 2021 with the BBC blocks, a logo designed to work across media. From 1958, there have been six different BBC logos. The first logo of the network was used from 1958 to 1963, the second from 1963 to 1971, the third from 1971 to 1992, the fourth from 1988 to 1997, the fifth from 1997 to 2021, while the sixth and current logo was adopted in October 2021.
The Window on the World idents were a set of idents used by BBC Two from 18 February 2007 until 13 November 2014. They were created by AMV BBDO and produced by Red Bee Media. The idents featured a number 2 cut out of, or made out of parts of the everyday environment.

The BBC One "Oneness" idents were a set of on-screen channel identities used on BBC One from December 2016 until April 2022; soft launched with the channel's Christmas presentation, and officially launched on 1 January 2017, the idents largely featured scenes of people performing everyday activities across various locations in the United Kingdom. The idents were developed by BBC Creative in collaboration with photographer Martin Parr.
HGTV is a British free-to-air interior home and garden-orientated lifestyle television channel broadcasting in the United Kingdom and Ireland, currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. The channel originally launched on 1 November 1997 as UK Style and then was rebranded to Home on 30 April 2009 and was rebranded to its current form on 21 January 2020. HGTV is broadcast 24 hours a day on Sky. UK Style was transmitted by terrestrial provider ITV Digital 24 hours a day until the company's collapse in 2002. After a slight rebrand to UKTV Style, the channel made a return to terrestrial screens for a time in the mid-2000s as part of the now-defunct Top Up TV system. Before 2016, HGTV was a pay channel. Home became available as a free-to-air linear service on Freeview from 1 March 2016.
