The Charles H. Marshall was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built by Henry Steers in 1860 for a group of New York pilots. She was in the Great Blizzard of 1888, the same year the National Geographic came out with an article about the successful struggle made by the crew of the Marshall. The boat was named in honor of the American businessman Charles Henry Marshall. In the age of steam she was sold in 1896.
The new pilot-boat Charles H. Marshall was built by Henry Steers for Captain Josiah Johnson Sr., Frederick Nelson, Jonathan Wright and other New York and Sandy Hook pilots. On June 20, 1860, she was launched from the foot of Twelfth street, East River. [2] [3]
On 9 July 1860, the Charles H. Marshall made a trail trip to the Sandy Hook Lightship and back. Charles Henry Marshall of the Black Ball line, Moses H. Grinnell, Joseph Hoxle, George W. Blunt a Pilot Commissioner and others were on board as friends of Captain Johnson. A dinner was served on board with toasts and speeches made by the quests. [3] The boat was named in honor of Charles Henry Marshall, an American businessman, art collector and philanthropist, who presented a silver pitcher, inscribed "Josiah Johnson, from his friend C. H. Marshall," as a testimonial to his long and faithful service. [4]
The Charles H. Marshall, No. 3 was one of twenty-one New York pilot boats in 1860 that was in regular service. [5]
On 17 June 1863, during the American Civil War, Captain Frederick Nelson, of the pilot-boat Charles H. Marshall, No. 3 spoke to the captain on the fishing schooner Rose, who reported that a three-masted, three gun, schooner privateer Nantucket took two barrels of mackerel and all their pork, but did not hurt anyone. He was looking for rich men and square-rigged vessels. [6]
The Charles H. Marshall was listed in the Record of American and Foreign Shipping from 1876 to 1900. From 1876 through 1898, she was listed as owned by the New York Pilots and her Master was Jonathan Wright. From 1899 to 1900, G. Amsinck was the owner and Jonathan Wright was still master of the boat. She was listed as 45-tons, built in 1860, 78 feet in length, 20 feet in breadth, and 7 feet in depth. [1]
On 9 October 1873, the C. H. Marshall was one of the boats that registered in the Ocean Regatta, which was a race from Owl's Head Point around to Cape May Lighthouse in New Jersey, and back to the Sandy hook Lightship, but did not appear. [7]
William Canvin, son of John Joseph Canvin, died in 1878 by falling from the masthead of the Charles H. Marshall. [8] Canvin Sr., was a pilot and one of the owners of the pilot-boat Charles H. Marshall. He was a pilot on the Marshall from 1860 to 1890. [9]
There was an article about the Great Blizzard of 1888, by Edward Everett Hayden, that appeared in the National Geographic Society's first magazine issue on 1 October 1888.
In the Great Blizzard of 1888, boat-keeper Robert Robinson, of the Charles H. Marshall, No. 3, provided a day-by-day report. On March 10, 1888, the Marshall, left Staten Island on a cruise. When she was 18 miles from the Sandy Hook Lightship, she ran into a dense fog with snow and rain. The captain placed three oil bags hung over the side, which saved her because the oil prevented the seas from breaking. Iron bolts were put in the oil bags to keep them in the water. By March 15, the storm had passed and she was able to return to port. [10]
When the Charles H. Marshall was about 18 miles S.E. from the lightship, a dense fog shut in, and it was decided to remain outside and ride out the storm. The wind hauled to the eastward toward midnight, and at 3 A.M. it looked so threatening in the N.W. that a fourth reef was taken in the mainsail and the foresail was treble-reefed. In half an hour the wind died out completely, and the vessel lay in the trough of a heavy S.E. sea, that was threatening every moment to engulf her. She was then about 12 miles E.S.E. from Sandy Hook lightship, and in twenty minutes the gale struck her with such force from N.W. that she was thrown on her beam ends; she instantly righted again, however, but in two hours was so covered with ice that she looked like a small iceberg. On 28 January 1890, John J. Canvin Sr., boarded the barquentine Edward Cushing of Camden, Maine, from the pilot-boat Charles H. Marshall, No. 3. He drowned when he was trying to steer the barkentine off Highland Light into port. He slipped over the railing into the sea. Efforts to find him showed that he had drowned. He was 68 years old and one of the oldest pilots in the service. [12]
On 1 February 1896, the New York Pilots discarded sixteen sailboats and moved them to the Erie Basin in Brooklyn. They were replaced with steam pilot boats. The Charles H. Marshall was sold for $4,000. [13] From 1899 to 1900, she was listed with owner G. Amsinck & Co. as owner and Jonathan Wright as Master. [1]
Joseph Henderson was a 19th-century American harbor pilot who guided large vessels into and out of New York Harbor as a Sandy Hook pilot. During his long career his work included bringing the ship that carried the Statue of Liberty safely into port after its trip from Europe.
William H. Starbuck was a 19th-century New York pilot boat built to take the place of the Mary and Catherine, that sank in 1885. She was launched from the J. S. Ellis & Son shipyard, at Tottenville, Staten Island in 1886. The Starbuck was one of the few pilot-boats to take the offensive in the Great Blizzard of 1888, when she ran into the steamship Japanese and survived one of the most severe recorded blizzards in American history. She was one of the last pilot boats that were sold in an age of steam and electricity.
The James Stafford was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built in 1888 for the New York Pilots. She took the place of the pilot boat Enchantress, that was lost in the Great Blizzard of 1888. She was named after James Stafford, one of the oldest and prominent shipping men of Brooklyn. She sank near Sandy Hook in 1898 when she ran into the Dry Romer shoal. At that time, the Stafford was one of the oldest pilot-boats still in service in a time when they were being replaced with steam pilot boats.
The America, No. 21 was a 19th-century pilot boat built in 1880 for the New York City and Sandy Hook Pilots. She was a replacement for the William H. Aspinwall, No. 21, that was lost off Point Judith, Rhode Island in 1880. She weathered the Great Blizzard of 1888. In the time of steam, the America was sold in 1896 by the New York Pilots. A new pilot-boat America was built in 1897 for Captain James H. Reid of Boston and designed from the line drawings by Thomas F. McManus of Boston. After serving 21 years in the Boston Pilots' Association, the America was sold to David W. Simpson of Boston in 1918.
The Thomas S. Negus was a 19th-century two-masted Sandy Hook pilot boat, built by C. & R. Poillon shipyard in Brooklyn in 1873 for the New Jersey maritime pilots. She was built to replace the pilot boat Jane, No. 1, which sank in early 1873. She was the winner of a $1,000 prize at the Cape May Regatta in 1873. She was named for Thomas S. Negus, president of the N. J. Pilots' Commissioners. In 1897, she left the pilot service to prospect for gold during the Klondike Gold Rush.
The Caldwell H. Colt was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat, built in 1887, at the Samuel H. Pine's shipyard in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for a group of New York Pilots. She was one of the pilot-boats that was in the Great Blizzard of 1888, that was one of the most severe blizzards in American history. In 1903, she was sold to a group of Pensacola, Florida pilots.
The David T. Leahy was a 19th-century two-masted pilot boat schooner, built in 1890 at the C. & R. Poillon shipyard in New York City. She was named in honor of David T. Leahy, a wealthy woolen merchant. She was said to be the fastest boat in the New York and New Jersey fleet. In 1899, the David T. Leahy was renamed the James Gordon Bennett when the pilots consolidated their business. She sank off Sandy Hook when the German Atlas Line steamship Alene hit her in 1901.
The Francis Perkins, No. 13 was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat, built by Henry Steers in 1866 for a group of New York Pilots. She was considered one of the finest boats ever built. During a snow storm in 1887, the Perkins struck the steamship Aries and sank near the Barnegat shoals.
The Edward F. Williams was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat, built in 1863 at the Edward F. Williams shipyard in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for a group of New York Pilots. She survived the Great Blizzard of 1888. In the age of steam, the Williams was sold in 1896.
The Mary A. Williams was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat, built in 1861 by the shipbuilder Edward F. Williams in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, for a group of New York pilots. She was named Mary Ann Williams after the wife of the builder. The boat was considered one of the finest connected with the pilot service. She survived the Great Blizzard of 1888. In the age of steam, the Mary A. Williams was sold in 1896.

In 1876, she was run down and sank, off Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, by the steamship New Orleans. She was raised and was one of the pilot boats that survived the Great Blizzard of 1888. The Caprice was last reported sailing off the coast of New York in 1891.

She was launched from the Westervelt & McKay shipyard. The Enchantress was one of the oldest pilot-boats in the service. She was Cornelius Vanderbilt's favorite pilot boat. The Enchantress went down with all hands in the Great Blizzard of 1888. The pilot boat James Stafford was built to replace her.
W. W. Story was a 19th-century New Jersey pilot boat built in 1874 at the Samuel H. Pine shipyard in Greenpoint, New York. She sank off Sandy Hook horseshoe during the Blizzard of 1888. She was raised and turned into a fishing smack. On November 13, 1896, she was reported missing along with her crew after being last seen along Absecon, New Jersey when she was caught up in a hurricane.
