The Enoch Turley was a 19th-century Pennsylvania pilot schooner built in 1842 in Baltimore, Maryland. In the 1880s she was caught up in the competition and rivalry between New Jersey and Pennsylvania pilots and the Delaware pilots. She survived the Great Blizzard of 1888, but was swept away in 1889, with all hands lost, during a powerful gale.

Construction and service

The two-masted pilot boat Enoch Turley was built in Baltimore, Maryland in November 1842 for George W. Pride. She went on her first trial run on November 25, 1842. A large party were on board. [2] She was named in honor of Captain Enoch Turley of Philadelphia, whose son, Enoch Turley Jr., was appointed harbormaster for the port of Philadelphia (1856) and later served as the president of the Society for the Relief of Poor Shipmasters. Charles D. Schellenger worked on the pilot schooner Enoch Turley. [3] Her pilots were John Kelley, Luster D. Schellenger, James Clampett, William Edwards, Joseph Snodgrass, James A. Orton, and William Baker. [4]

In the spring of 1843, the Enoch Turley was in a race with the pilot boat John G. Whilldin, which was from Philadelphia to the breakwater at the Delaware capes. She was in another race on September 12, 1844, with the pilot boat Herald. The boats left Southwark, Philadelphia crowded with ladies for the race and excursion. The stake was a banquet for all hands to be paid by the losing boat. [5] [3]

The Turley was stranded ashore near Indian River Inlet in the winter of 1843. She was raised, repaired and a new keel was replaced in the spring of 1844. [3] She was rebuilt several times, and by Mr. Moore at Wilimington in 1862 and again by Jackson & Sharp at Wilmington in 1880. She was a favorite among Delaware pilots. [4]

After the American Civil War, the Turley toured the Chesapeake Bay and viewed the deserted rebel fortifications and half-sunken hulks from the war. She started from Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia and returned to the Fort the next day. [3]

The Enoch Turley was registered as a pilot schooner with the Record of American and Foreign Shipping from 1881 to 1885. Her owner at this time was George W. Pride; built in 1842 at Baltimore, Maryland; and her hailing port was the Port of Philadelphia. Her dimensions were 73.6 ft. in length; 18.8 ft. breadth of beam; 7.2 ft. depth of hold; and 47-tons Tonnage. [1]

In 1882, there was competition and rivalry between New Jersey and Pennsylvania pilots and the Delaware pilots. The Delaware pilotage laws had hurt trade in the Port of Philadelphia. Because of this, on September 21, 1882, the Board of Port Wardens of Philadelphia approved a resolution to assign seven pilots, that were attached to Delaware boats, and assign them to Pennsylvania boats. There were five pilots assigned to the Cape Henlopen boats, Thomas Howard and Enoch Turley and two pilots assigned to the Cape May boats, John G. Whilldin and E. C. Knight . [6] The resolution said that there would be no further connection with the Delaware pilots and that the Delaware pilots would not be able to board the New Jersey and Pennsylvania pilot boats. [7] [8] The Delaware pilots had only the pilot boats Henry C. Cope and the Thomas F. Bayard, which refused to be governed by the new rules. [9] On August 3, 1886, the Board of Port Wardens of Philadelphia met and adopted two new resolutions that amended the September 1882 resolutions. The Pilot Commissioners of the State of Delaware declared that the pilot boat Thomas Howard would become a Delaware pilot boat. As a result, the board recognized four pilot boats, the E. C. Knight,John G. Whilldin,Enoch Turley and Christian Bergh. The Pennsylvania pilots were instructed to have the abbreviation "Penna." placed on the sail, which contained the boat number. [10]

On February 15, 1888, John West, one of the pilots on the Pennsylvania pilot boat Enoch Turley, fell into the water trying to board the steamship Indiana. He was able to survive the ordeal. [11] Weeks later, in the Great Blizzard of 1888, the Turley was snagged on a shoal near the Lewes breakwater where she lost her masts. [3] The Cape Henlopen lifesavers arrived on the scene and were able to rescue all seven crewmen and their boat. [12]

End of service

The Enoch Turley was last seen by pilots on the pilot boat J. H. Edmunds on April 6, 1889, 25 miles southeast of Fenwick Island light ship. [4] It was reported that she sank with all hands lost during a bad gale. Owners and pilots Charles D. Schellenger, John S. Kelly, Morgan B. Saunders, Harry M. Parker and James A. Orton lost their lives on the pilot boat. [13] After the accident, the community of Lewes, Delaware created a benevolent fund of over $6,000 to aid the widows and children of the pilots. [14]

The Turley was replaced by the pilot boat William W. Ker , which was launched on November 27, 1889, from the Jackson and Sharp yard in Philadelphia. She was named in honor of Assistant District Attorney William W. Ker. James R. Kelley from the Turley was present at the launch. [15]

D. J. Lawlor Sandy Hook Pilot boat

The D. J. Lawlor was a 19th-century Boston pilot boat built in 1881 at North Weymouth, Massachusetts. The schooner was considered the largest for her type, noted for her seaworthiness and heavy weather performance. She was named after the prominent Boston shipbuilder Dennison J. Lawlor. She was struck by a fishing schooner Horace B. Parker, in 1895, and was replaced by the pilot-boat Liberty in 1896.

<i>Hesper</i> (pilot boat) Boston Pilot boat

The Hesper was a 19th-century Boston pilot boat built in 1884, designed from a model by Dennison J. Lawlor as a Boston yacht and pilot-boat for merchant and ship owner George W. Lawler. She was known to be the largest pilot boat under the American flag at 104 feet long and the fastest of the Boston fleet. She competed in several first-class sailing races, and in 1886, the Hesper won the silver cup in what was known as the first Fishermen's Race. She was withdrawn from the pilot service and sold in 1901. The Hesper became a wreck on the point off Cape Henlopen in 1919.

<i>Christian Bergh</i> (pilot boat) New York Pilot boat

The Christian Bergh was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built in 1851 at the Westervelt & Co. shipyard. She later became a Pennsylvania pilot boat until her service ended in 1886 when she became an oyster boat in the Delaware Bay. She was named after Christian Bergh a prominent shipbuilder in New York and a close friend of Jacob Westervelt.

The Mary Ann, No. 13 was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built for the New York pilots. She helped transport maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the New York Harbor. In 1860, the Mary Ann, was one of only twenty-one pilot boats in the New York and New Jersey fleet. She went ashore outside Sandy Hook in 1863.

The Caprice was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built in 1871 by Brown & Lovell in East Boston, Massachusetts for Peter McEnany and other New York pilots. In 1876, she was run down and sank, off Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, by the steamship New Orleans. She was raised and was one of the pilot boats that survived the Great Blizzard of 1888. The Caprice was last reported sailing off the coast of New York in 1891.

The David Carll was a 19th-century pilot boat, built in 1885 at the David Carll shipyard in City Island, New York. She was named in honor of David Carll, a well-known City Island shipbuilder. The David Carll was considered to be among the fastest schooners in the fleet. She was built to replace the Mary E. Fish that was run down and sank by the schooner Frank Harrington in 1885. She was one of the pilot boats that survived the Great Blizzard of 1888. The David Carll was lost at sea in 1893.

In 1892, the Cooper sank in a snowstorm and was replaced by the Joseph Pulitzer in 1894.

The Joseph N. Lord was a 19th-century Sandy Hook pilot boat built in 1840 at the Jabez Williams shipyard in East River, for New York pilots. She helped transport maritime pilots between inbound or outbound ships coming into the New York Harbor. The Joseph N. Lord was lost at sea in 1845 at Port-au-Platt, Dominican Republic.

<i>Sandy Hook</i> (pilot boat) New York Pilot boat

The Sandy Hook was a steam pilot boat built in 1902, by Lewis Nixon at the Crescent Shipyard in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1914, she was purchased by the New York and New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Association to replace the pilot boat New Jersey, that was lost in 1914. She could carry 10 to 12 pilots that would help guide ships through the New York Harbor. The Norwegian America Line Oslofjord, with the Crown Prince Olav of Norway and Princess Märtha of Sweden on board, ran into and sank the Sandy Hook in 1939.

Thomas D. Harrison New Jersey Pilot boat

Thomas D. Harrison was a 19th-century New York pilot boat built for New Jersey pilots. She was launched from the Jacob S. Ellis & Son shipyard, at Tottenville, Staten Island in 1875. The Harrison went ashore in the Great Blizzard of 1888 with no lives lost. She continued as a pilot boat with Pilot Stephen Cooper in command. She was purchased in 1897 by Allerton D. Hitch and used for coastal trade in the Cape Verde islands off the west African coast.

The Pilots' Association For The Bay & River Delaware is the official maritime pilot group for the Delaware Bay and Delaware River. The association is one of the oldest state pilot organizations in the nation that was founded in 1896. Delaware Bay Pilots are licensed maritime pilots for the Delaware Bay and River. Delaware pilots guide oceangoing vessels, passenger liners, freighters and tankers in and out of the harbor. The Delaware Bay is bordered inland by the States of New Jersey and Delaware, and the Delaware Capes, Cape Henlopen to the south and Cape May to the north, on the Atlantic Ocean.

<i>Thomas Howard</i> (pilot boat) Delaware Pilot boat

The Thomas Howard was a 19th-century pilot boat built by the William Cramp & Sons in 1870 for the Philadelphia Pilots' Association. She was the finest and fastest pilot-boat belonging to the Philadelphia port. In 1886, the Pilots' Association for the State of Delaware declared that the Thomas Howard become a Delaware pilot boat.

<i>Thomas F. Bayard</i> (pilot boat) Delaware Pilot boat

The Thomas F. Bayard was a 19th-century Delaware River pilot schooner built by C. & R. Poillon shipyard in 1880. She spent sixteen years as a pilot boat before being sold during the Yukon Gold Rush in 1897. She was sold again in 1906 for Seal hunting, then purchased by the Department of Marine & Fisheries where she guided freighters into New Westminster, British Columbia for 43 years. She was then acquired by the Vancouver Maritime Museum in 1978. When she sank at her mooring in 2002, the International Yacht Restoration School, Mystic Seaport and the Vancouver Maritime Museum, removed the vessel in pieces for the archeological teams to study and document the remains of her hull. The Thomas F. Bayard Collection, at the Vancouver Maritime Museum, contains the documents, history and preservation efforts.

John G. Whilldin Pilot boat

The John G. Whilldin was a 19th-century Pennsylvania pilot schooner built in 1839 by the Joseph Vogle shipyard of Southwark, Philadelphia. In 1893, the Board of Port Wardens of Philadelphia recognized only four pilot boats for the Port of Philadelphia, the E. C. Knight, John G. Whilldin,William W. Ker and J. Henry Edmunds. On September 8, 1915, the Whilldin was reported as wrecked near Port St. Joe, Florida.

William W. Ker 19th-century American pilot schooner

The William W. Ker was a 19th-century Pennsylvania pilot schooner built in 1889 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was designed by Edward Burgess for the Pennsylvania pilots and was built for speed. She was a favorite with the pilots and was considered the fastest pilot boat on the coast. The Ker was hit and sank by a steamer off the Five Fathom Bank in 1900.

<i>Ebe W. Tunnell</i> (pilot boat) Pennsylvania Pilot boat

The Ebe W. Tunnell was a 19th-century Delaware pilot schooner built in 1887 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1889, the Tunnell was driven out to sea in a fierce storm. The crew spent five days in turbulent waters before they were rescued. In the age of steam, Ebe W. Tunnell had outlived its usefulness and was sold as a houseboat for a group of men working in the Chesapeake Bay in 1909.

J. Henry Edmunds Pennsylvania Pilot boat

The J. Henry Edmunds was a 19th-century pilot schooner built in 1887 in Brooklyn, New York for Philadelphia pilots. She sank in 1892 and a second Edmunds was built in 1893, which lasted thirty-five years before she sank in bad weather outside Cape Henlopen in 1928. She was the last schooner-rigged pilot boat in the Delaware Bay.
