Charlotte High School was a public high school in Rochester, operated by the Rochester City School District. The school is named for Charlotte, formerly an incorporated village in the Town of Greece and now a neighborhood in the city of Rochester. The school closed in June 2016. [2]

History

A school was built on the former site of a one-room school house in Charlotte in 1867. In 1907, a high school building was erected and the present Charlotte High School building was built in 1931. [4] In 1988, the Rochester City School District changed Charlotte to a middle school. In 2005, it became a high school once again. [5] The school closed in June 2016. [2]

Campus

Charlotte High School is housed in a five-story new art deco style building on Lake Avenue in Rochester, not far from Lake Ontario. The building contains a swimming pool that is open to the public when not used for school activities. [6]

In addition to typical high school courses, Charlotte High School offers some unique opportunities to students.

Clubs and organizations

The school offers art, music, newspaper, math league and drama club. [7]

Young video artists from Charlotte participate in the Rochester Urban Youth Film Festival, sponsored by the University of Rochester. [10]

Sports

The school supports a full sports program. [7]

The Lakesiders basketball team won successive New York State championships in 1983 and 1984. [5] After winning the 2007 Section V Class "BB" title on March 3, 2007, the Charlotte basketball team finished second in the Far West Regional Class "B" final on March 10, 2007. [11] The team repeated as Section V "BB"" champions on March 1, 2008. [12]

On March 24, 1921, the wrestling team hosted city rival Edison Tech in what is believed to be the first interscholastic wrestling dual meet Western New York and beyond. [13] In 1949, the Lakesider wrestlers went undefeated in dual meets (8 wins, 0 losses) and won the team title at the 3rd annual NYSPHSAA Section V Class A Wrestling Championships. [14]

The 2009–2010 track team won the Section V Class B championship.[ citation needed ]

Performance

In 2005, the school's attendance rate of 85% and its suspension rate of 33.3% both exceed those for similar schools. The school's standardized test scores for English Language Arts, Mathematics and Social Studies rank below the state average for similar schools. [15]

Incidents

In 2004, there were reports of violence and other acts at the school that required disciplinary action. [16] [17] [18] Charlotte High School was on the New York State list of dangerous schools in 2006. [19] [20]

Shaker High School, is a public high school in Latham, Albany County, New York, United States, and is the only high school operated by the North Colonie Central School District.

Minisink Valley High School is a secondary school located in Slate Hill, New York. It contains an enrollment of over 1100 students. The school, part of the Minisink Valley Central School District, was established in 1958 as a secondary school for grades 7–10. A junior class established in the 1959-60 school year became the first class to graduate in June 1961. Over the next decade, enrollment in the school increased so rapidly that in 1971, a bond was passed by district residents to build a new high school adjacent to the original school building. Reginald G. Kierstead High School was completed in 1974, and provided a comfortable home for the upperclassmen of the district. Additions were made in the years following 9/11 to accompany the expanding class sizes due to suburbanization. Both high school and middle school buildings have seen recent addition to the response of larger class sizes, along with the completion of new pool and track facilities. Minisink ceased the use of Native American imagery in their logo and mascot in 2023 following a New York State law prohibiting the use of Native American imagery by public schools, however they continued to use the name "Warriors".

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is the governing body of interscholastic sports for most public schools in New York outside New York City. The organization was created in 1923, after a predecessor organization called the New York State Public High School Association of Basketball Leagues began in 1921 to bring consistency to eligibility rules and to conduct state tournaments. It consists of 768 member high schools from the state divided into 11 geographic sections. While as its name suggests the vast majority of its members are public, it does include a number of private and Catholic high schools. Most of these are located in Central New York and the Capital District, where parallel sanctioning bodies for private schools do not exist. It is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations as well as the New York State Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations.

John Richard "Jack" Leasure is an American former professional basketball player who spent the majority of his career playing in the New Zealand National Basketball League for the Taranaki Mountainairs. He is best known for his collegiate career at Coastal Carolina University in which he was named the 2006 Big South Conference Player of the Year and finished with 411 made three-point field goals, which was the fifth-highest NCAA Division I total at the time of his graduation in 2008. He is currently the head basketball coach at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, New York.

The Charles Finney School is a private, non-denominational Christian school offering a college preparatory program to students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. The school has developed a reputation for both student outreach and as a strong competitor, despite its small size. Finney is accredited by both the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Association of Christian Schools International and is the only school in the Greater Rochester, New York region to have achieved both. Finney students come from 22 different school districts in the region, as well as from five different countries through the school's International Student Program.
