The Charlottesville Tom Sox are a collegiate summer baseball team in Charlottesville, Virginia. [1] They play in the southern division of the Valley Baseball League.
The Tom Sox are the 2017, 2019 and 2022 Valley Baseball League Champions. [2] [3] [4] They finished runner-up in 2018 & 2023.
The team plays its home games at Charlottesville High School. [5]
The Tom Sox were founded in 2014 and began play in the summer of 2015, marking the first time since 1974 Charlottesville had a team in the Valley Baseball League. [6] The given mission of the team is to "create an unparalleled summer collegiate baseball experience through the development of our players and volunteers and engagement in and with our community, and by holding ourselves to standards of excellence and professionalism on and off the field." [7]
The Valley Baseball League is an NCAA and MLB-sanctioned collegiate summer baseball league in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia.
Joseph Melton Oliver is an American former professional baseball catcher. During a 19-year professional playing career, Oliver played parts of 13 seasons in MLB for seven different teams during 1989–2001, and was a member of the World Series-winning 1990 Cincinnati Reds. He later managed in Minor League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox organization from 2014 through 2020, and in collegiate summer baseball in 2021 and 2022. As a player, Oliver was listed at 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) and 215 pounds (98 kg); he batted and threw right-handed.
The Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League (CRSCBL) is a collegiate summer baseball league located in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland metropolitan areas. The CRSCBL is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB).
The Bethesda Big Train is a collegiate summer baseball team based in Bethesda, Maryland. The team is a member of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League (CRCBL), and derives its name from the nickname of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson, who was a Bethesda resident for ten years. The Big Train plays its home games at Shirley Povich Field. As of August 2023, more than 210 Big Train alumni have played professional baseball, including 22 in the major leagues.
