Shehbaz Sharif served the longest tenure in history as chief minister of Punjab spanning over 11 years of rule. His tenures involved the 1997 Nawaz Government,the 2008 Pakistan Peoples Party's regime and the 2013 PML-N's rule. His prominent contribution involves infrastructure development,transit projects and power plants. He has developed flyovers,road infrastructures,transit services and power projects. He is best known for his dedication,working speed,ability to execute mega projects and quick actions. However,he is also heavily criticised over lack of priorities,spending development funds mostly in Lahore and large cities,keeping major power and assignments within himself,nepotism,conflict of interests,and misuse of authority by opposition parties. [ citation needed ]
His vision in transit system involves Lahore Metrobus,Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus,Multan Metrobus and Orange Line (Lahore Metro),several flyovers and road projects majorly in larger cities especially Lahore. His main work in education includes,Danish School,Punjab Educational Endowment Fund and the Chief Minister Laptop Scheme. His electric power initiates include,Nandipur Power Project,Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park and other projects. In order to maintain security and enforce law and order,he started the Dolphin Force and the Safe Cities Project. He had done some tremendous work during the dengue outbreak in Punjab and capped it successfully within a short period of time. However,Shehbaz Sharif also remained surrounded with several controversies including Model town incident,scam,and corruption probes over development projects. [ citation needed ]
The chief ministership of Shehbaz Sharif began on 20 February 1997,with formation of majority provincial government in the Punjab,Pakistan. This occurred upon dismissal of the government by-then President Leghari after alleged corruption and abuse of power,which was two years earlier than 5-year tenure. [1] [2] After the 1997 Pakistani general election,Sharif became 9th Chief Minister of Punjab. His first tenure started on 20 February 1997 and ended on 12 October 1999 with 1999 Pakistani coup d'état.
Sharif again became chief minister of Punjab on 8 June 2008 after his fourth [3] win from Bhakkar constituency in by-polls held in June 2008 and subsequently elected chief minister unopposed after securing 265 votes in the 371-members provincial assembly. [4] [5] After the 2013 general election,Sharif remained Chief Minister of Punjab after securing 214 seats out of 372.

During his first tenure as chief minister of Punjab,he focused on health,education,agriculture,and industrial sectors.
During election 2008 Pakistani general election obtained 59 seats out of total 296 as compared to 45 seats of Pakistan peoples Party. [6] During this tenure Shahbaz Shareef initiated "Sasti Roti scheme" (bread on subsidised rates), [7] disbursed laptop among students,and other key initiatives.
Election 2013 marked landslide victory for Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) securing 214 seats in Punjab Assembly. Shehbaz Sharif was selected 17th chief minister and fourth time in Punjab. The fourth term continued major policies from the third tenure,including mass transportation systems in Punjab. Shehbaz Sharif initiated several power projects during his fourth tenure,started Lahore Waste Management Company,and initiated numerous health and education projects.
During his third tenure,he initiated a rapid urban transportation project in Lahore namely Lahore Metrobus. The project started operating in 2013 and has 27 stations along a 27 km corridor that stretches from Shahdara to Gajumata. [8] He started two further metro networks in Rawalpindi,Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus and in Multan Metrobus under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Shahbaz Shareef also started the metro railway system in Lahore commonly known as Orange Line (Lahore Metro). The first phase of the project was started in October 2015,while in October 2016,Phase 2 of the project was started. [9] The project was inaugurated on October 26,2020,by Chief minister Usman Buzdar though most of the work was completed in the fourth tenure of Shahbaz Shareef. [10]
Shahbaz Shareef's tenure marked key improvements in energy projects in installed capacity under China-Pakistan economic corridor. The projects include 400MW Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park, [11] [12] 425 MW Nandipur Power Project, [13] 1,223MW Balloki Power Plant (RLNG based), [14] [15] 1,230MW Haveli Bahadur Shah Power Plant (LNG based) and 1320 Megawatt Sahiwal Coal Power Project. [16]
In 2003,an anti-terrorism court issued an arrest warrant for Sharif in a 1998 extrajudicial killings case. [17] Sharif was accused for ordering extrajudicial killings of five people in a fake police encounter in 1998 during his first tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab. [18] Sharif attempted to return to Pakistan in 2004 to appear before the court,but was forcibly deported back to Saudi Arabia. [18] [19] In August 2007,the Supreme Court of Pakistan gave its verdict which allowed Sharif to return to Pakistan. [20] In September 2007,a court in Pakistan ordered police to arrest Sharif "at whichever airport he lands at" on a 2003 arrest warrant. [18] [21] Sharif denied ordering the alleged killings and said the charges against him were politically motivated. [18] He further said "in 2004 he landed at the Lahore Airport and wanted to appear before the court but the government in a deceitful mode sent him back to Saudi Arabia in sheer violation of the orders of the Supreme Court." [22]
Chaudhry Parvez Elahi Warraich is a Pakistani politician who was the Chief Minister of Punjab from late 2002 to late 2007 and again from late 2022 to early 2023. He was a member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab from August 2018 till January 2023,when he,as chief minister,dissolved the assembly. In 2023,he left the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) and joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) along with his son,Moonis Elahi,and 10 other former PML(Q) MPAs over political rifts with the party president and cousin,Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. He was appointed as,and is currently serving as the president of the PTI. He also served as the president of the Punjab Division of the PML(Q).
Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician and businessman who is currently serving as the 23rd prime minister of Pakistan since March 2024,having previously served in the post from April 2022 to August 2023. He has also served as the president of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N). Previously,he served as the chief minister of Punjab three times,making him the longest-serving chief minister of Punjab.
The chief minister of Punjab is the head of government of the Pakistani province of Punjab. The chief minister leads the legislative branch of the provincial government,and is elected by the provincial assembly for Provincial Assembly. Given that they have the confidence of the assembly,the chief minister's term is for five years and is subject to no term limits. Maryam Nawaz Sharif is the current elected chief minister of Punjab who won her seat in the 2024 general elections.
Rana Sanaullah Khan is a Pakistani lawyer and politician who is currently serving as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs since April 2024. Previously,he served as the 39th Interior Minister of Pakistan in first Shehbaz Sharif's Government. He is second most popular official in Shehbaz Sharif Government. He's been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from August 2018 till August 2023. He is a senior member of PML-N and the President of PML-N in Punjab province since 4 May 2019. Before getting elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan,Sanaullah had been elected to the Provincial Assembly of Punjab five times and had served in high-ranking ministries of the province.
Muhammad Hamza Shahbaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician,businessman,and the eldest son of current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab from September 2018 to April 2022,and resumed this role on 20 October 2022 and continued until the dissolution of the assembly. He briefly held the position of Chief Minister of Punjab from 30 April 2022 to 26 July 2022. His tenure as a member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab spanned from August 2018 to January 2023. Prior to this,he was a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from June 2008 to May 2018.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician,currently serving as the 20th Chief Minister of Punjab,in office since 26 February 2024. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and her initial involvement in public life was through her family’s philanthropic organisations. However,her political career began in earnest in 2012 when she took charge of the election campaign for the 2013 general elections. Following the elections,she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in 2013. Despite her active role,she resigned from the position in 2014 after her appointment was legally challenged in the Lahore High Court.
The Lahore Metrobus is a bus rapid transit service operating in Lahore,Punjab,Pakistan. The service is integrated with Lahore Transport Company's local bus service to operate as one urban transport system,providing seamless transit service across Lahore District with connections to neighboring suburban communities. The Lahore Metrobus was designed to be opened in stages,with the first stage opening on 11 February 2013 stretching from Gajumata to Shahadra. The 27 km stretch was opened during a ceremony by Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif along with Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Bekir Bozdağ. The second and third stages have been put on hold,as proposals have been put forth to convert the remaining stages to light rail.
The Sharif family is the most prominent political family in Pakistan and is based in Lahore. The Sharif Family are Punjabi-speaking Kashmiris with their origin in Anantnag,Jammu and Kashmir and settled in Punjab in the late 20th century.
Mian Abbas Sharif was a Pakistani politician and Tablighi Jamaat missionary who was the Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 1993 to 1997. He was the younger brother of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif.
The Nandipur Power Project is a 425 MW combined cycle thermal power plant situated at Nandipur near Gujranwala in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Being constructed by the China Dongfang Electric Corporation,the project was completed in March 2015. The initial cost of the project was Rs. 27 billion,but this escalated during the revised project cycle-1 and totalled Rs. 58.42 bn at completion. The power plant faced a series of hiccups during and after launching its commercial operations. Prior and after construction,the project continued to attract a number of court cases,inquiries,investigations,audits,and political and commercial disputes. The plant collapsed after 5 days of operation,launching a series of inquiries ordered by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
Marriyum Aurangzeb is a Pakistani politician who currently serves as Senior Minister in the Government of Punjab,in office since March 2024.
The Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park is a photovoltaic power station in Bahawalpur,Punjab,Pakistan,named in honor of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah,the Founder of Pakistan. It is a 400 MW solar facility spanning an area of 8 km2 and hosting 1.6 million solar modules. The initial phase of the project was constructed by the Government of Punjab through a 100% owned subsidiary QA Solar in May 2015 at a cost of $131 million. On 5 May 2015,the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the first 100 MW project and dedicated it to the nation. Subsequent expansion was done in public-private partnership with Appolo Solar Development Pakistan Limited,Best Green Energy Pakistan Limited and Crest Energy Pakistan Limited each installing a 100 MW unit. The next phase of 100 MW will be installed by Zorlu Solar Pakistan (Pvt.) Limited,making it a 500 MW facility. Total planned capacity of the solar park is 1,000 MW.
The Multan Metrobus is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Multan,Punjab,Pakistan. Construction work on the line began in May 2015,while operations commenced on 24 January 2017. It was the third BRT project in Pakistan,after the Lahore Metrobus and the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus.
The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metrobus is a 83.6 km (51.9 mi) bus rapid transit system operating in the Islamabad–Rawalpindi metropolitan area of Pakistan. It consists of four routes,namely the Red,Orange,Blue,and Green Lines. The Red and Orange Lines have dedicated lanes with proper stations built along them,while the Blue and Green Lines currently run along the Islamabad Expressway and Srinagar Highway respectively,with regular traffic.
Zaeem Qadri is a Pakistani lawyer and politician who had been a member of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab,from 2008 to May 2018 and also Executive Member of Lahore Gymkhana Club.
Fawad Hasan Fawad is a Pakistani public policy practitioner,former civil servant who served in BPS-22 grade as the Principal Secretary to two Prime Ministers,Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi;and later as caretaker Federal Minister for Privatisation and Federal Minister for Inter Provincial Coordination.
The constitutional crisis in Pakistan's Punjab province began on 28 March 2022,when Usman Buzdar tendered his resignation as Chief Minister at the request of Prime Minister Imran Khan and nominated former Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to replace him. On 1 April 2022,his resignation was accepted by then Governor of Punjab,Chaudary Mohammed Sarwar.
The 2022 Azadi March I was a protest march initiated by the ousted former Pakistani prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party chairman Imran Khan against the government of his successor,Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. On 24 May 2022,Khan announced a long march towards Islamabad starting on 25 May 2022. Khan lead the march from Peshawar,the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,where his provincial government helped him. Senior PTI members lead the march from Lahore,the capital of Punjab.
Ahad Khan Cheema is a retired Pakistani bureaucrat who is the current Federal Minister of Economic Affairs,appointed on 11 March 2024. Previously,he has served as a chief executive officer (CEO) of the Quaid-e-Azam Thermal Power Company and director-general of the Lahore Development Authority. In 2018,the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Cheema on charges related to irregularities in the Ashiana Housing Scheme project during his time as chairman of the LDA. The investigation also involved former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's principal secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad and Shehbaz Sharif. Cheema was released on bail in 2021 after spending three years in jail and was acquitted of all charges by the NAB in 2023. He took retirement from civil service in January 2023.
