The Upper Peninsula (UP), also known as Upper Michigan, is the northern of the two major peninsulas that make up the U.S. state of Michigan. The peninsula is bounded on the north by Lake Superior, on the east by the St. Marys River, and on the southeast by Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Geographically, the Upper Peninsula has a land boundary with Wisconsin, and over-water boundaries with Minnesota and Ontario (Canada). Upper Peninsula counties also include nearby islands such as Grand, Drummond, Mackinac, and Bois Blanc, and more distant Isle Royale.

Michigan Department of Corrections

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) oversees prisons and the parole and probation population in the state of Michigan, United States. It has 31 prison facilities, and a Special Alternative Incarceration program, together composing approximately 41,000 prisoners. Another 71,000 probationers and parolees are under its supervision. The agency has its headquarters in Grandview Plaza in Lansing.

General

The Chippewa Correctional Facility houses inmates with a security level of I, II, and IV. The facility contains 120 beds for security level I inmates, 720 beds for security level II inmates, 192 beds for security level IV inmates, 22 beds for the detention unit, and 96 beds for an administrative segregation unit.

History

The facility opened in 1989. On August 9, 2009, the Straits Correctional Facility was closed and consolidated into the Chippewa Correctional Facility. [1]

In August 2006, a small twin-engine plane crashed near the prison, hitting a fence approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) outside the facility's secure perimeter. While no one at the prison was injured, all four people on board the plane were killed in the crash. [2]

Northpoint Training Center

Northpoint Training Center is a medium-security prison located in Boyle County, near Danville, Kentucky. It opened in 1983 and had a prison capacity of 1,256 as of 2006.

Lowell Correctional Institution

Lowell Correctional Institution is a women's prison in unincorporated Marion County, Florida, north of Ocala, in the unincorporated area of Lowell. A part of the Florida Department of Corrections, it serves as the primary prison for women in the state. Almost 3,000 women are incarcerated in the complex, which includes the Lowell Annex. As of 2015 2,696 women are in the main Lowell CI, making it the largest prison for women in the United States; its prison population became larger than that of the Central California Women's Facility that year.

Womens Huron Valley Correctional Facility

Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV) is a prison for women located in Pittsfield Township, operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). The three-letter designation for this facility is WHV. It is the only prison in Michigan which houses women.

Central Michigan Correctional Facility (STF) is a Michigan prison for male Level I prisoners.

Alger Correctional Facility (LMF) is a Michigan prison for adult men, operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections. It is located in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Alger County, on the south side of Munising.

Baraga Correctional Facility (AMF) is a Michigan prison, located in Baraga, for adult male prisoners. While it includes a Level I security facility, it is primarily a maximum security prison.

Thumb Correctional Facility (TCF) is a Michigan prison, located in Lapeer, for male prisoners. It is a Level II, lower-level security prison.

Kinross Correctional Facility (KCF) is a Michigan prison for men. It is located in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in Chippewa County on the south side of Kincheloe, adjacent to Chippewa County International Airport. The original facility closed in October 2015, with most of the inmates relocating to the formerly closed Hiawatha Correctional Facility. Upon the move, the Kinross Correctional Facility name was transferred to the reopened complex.

Macomb Correctional Facility (MRF) is a Michigan prison, located in Lenox Township, for adult male prisoners.

The Michigan Reformatory is a state prison for men located in Ionia, Ionia County, Michigan, owned and operated by the Michigan Department of Corrections. The facility has 352 beds at Level II security and 797 beds at Level IV security.
