Michigan State of the United States of America

Michigan is a state in the Great Lakes and Midwestern regions of the United States. The state's name, Michigan, originates from the Ojibwe word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". With a population of about 10 million, Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area, and is the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River. Its capital is Lansing, and its largest city is Detroit. Metro Detroit is among the nation's most populous and largest metropolitan economies.

Prison place in which people legally are physically confined and usually deprived of a range of personal freedoms

A prison, also known as a correctional facility, jail, gaol, penitentiary, detention center, remand center, or internment facility is a facility in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state. Prisons are most commonly used within a criminal justice system: people charged with crimes may be imprisoned until their trial; those pleading or being found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment. In simplest terms, a prison can also be described as a building in which people are legally held as a punishment for a crime they have committed.

Prisoner person who is deprived of liberty against their will

A prisoner is a person who is deprived of liberty against his or her will. This can be by confinement, captivity, or by forcible restraint. The term applies particularly to serving a prison sentence in a prison. This term does not apply to defendants who are pre-trial.

History

The prison was opened in 1990 [1] and was previously known as the Mid-Michigan Correctional Facility and Pine River Correctional Facility until they were consolidated on October 17, 2010. [2] [3]

Facility

The Central Michigan Correctional Facility consists of eight housing buildings which provide sixteen separate housing units. Each housing units consist of 7-8 bed open bays, with 140-160 prisoners. The housing units can hold 2400 Secure Level I prisoners, who are more easily managed within the facility (even though they may have committed violent crimes) than higher level prisoners. [3] There are separate buildings for administration, foodservice, academic programs, maintenance in a warehouse, and prisoner services. The facility is capable of providing on-site routine medical and dental care. Serious medical problems are treated at Michigan Department of Corrections' department at Duane L. Waters Hospital in Jackson, and emergencies are treated by nearby hospitals. [1]

Central administration is the leading or presiding body or group of people, and the highest administrative department which oversees all lower departments of an organization.

Food service or catering industry defines those businesses, institutions, and companies responsible for any meal prepared outside the home. This industry includes restaurants, school and hospital cafeterias, catering operations, and many other formats.

Warehouse commercial storage building for goods in transit

A warehouse is a building for storing goods. Warehouses are used by manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, transport businesses, customs, etc. They are usually large plain buildings in industrial parks on the outskirts of cities, towns or villages.

Security

The facility is surrounded by two 12 feet (3.7 m) fences. The exterior fence has rolls of razor wire on the side and top. The interior fence is an electronically monitored non-lethal electric fence. The perimeter of the facility is also monitored electronically, with surveillance cameras, and with an armed personnel patrol. [1]

Barbed tape

Barbed tape or razor wire is a mesh of metal strips with sharp edges whose purpose is to prevent passage by humans. The term "razor wire", through long usage, has generally been used to describe barbed tape products. Razor wire is much sharper than the standard barbed wire; it is named after its appearance, but is not razor sharp. The points are very sharp and made to rip and snag clothing and flesh.

Electric fence shock barrier to contain animals or people

An electric fence is a barrier that uses electric shocks to deter animals and people from crossing a boundary. The voltage of the shock may have effects ranging from discomfort to death. Most electric fences are used today for agricultural fencing and other forms of animal control, although they are frequently used to enhance the security of sensitive areas, such as military installations, prisons, and other security sensitive places; places exist where lethal voltages are used.

Closed-circuit television Use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place on a limited set of monitors

Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point (P2P), point to multipoint (P2MP), or mesh wired or wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, stores, and other areas where security is needed. Though Videotelephony is seldom called 'CCTV' one exception is the use of video in distance education, where it is an important tool.

Program

The Central Michigan Correctional Facility offers several programs for prisoners, including pre-release preparation, recreation, psychological counseling, cognitive restructuring, substance-abuse treatment, and a variety of voluntary self-help programs. A vocational program offers education opportunities in the areas of custodial maintenance technology, business educational technology, horticulture, and building trades. An academic program offers classes in adult basic education and general education development. The facility also provides a general and law library, hobbycraft, religious services, and a barbershop. [1]

Recreation activity of leisure

Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. The "need to do something for recreation" is an essential element of human biology and psychology. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be "fun".

Psychotherapy is the use of psychological methods, particularly when based on regular personal interaction, to help a person change behavior and overcome problems in desired ways. Psychotherapy aims to improve an individual's well-being and mental health, to resolve or mitigate troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts, or emotions, and to improve relationships and social skills. Certain psychotherapies are considered evidence-based for treating some diagnosed mental disorders. Others have been criticized as pseudoscience.

Cognitive restructuring (CR) is a psychotherapeutic process of learning to identify and dispute irrational or maladaptive thoughts known as cognitive distortions, such as all-or-nothing thinking (splitting), magical thinking, over-generalization, magnification, and emotional reasoning, which are commonly associated with many mental health disorders. CR employs many strategies, such as Socratic questioning, thought recording, and guided imagery, and is used in many types of therapies, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT). A number of studies demonstrate considerable efficacy in using CR-based therapies.
