The New Zealand national cricket team represents New Zealand in men's international cricket. Nicknamed the Black Caps,they played their first Test in 1930 against England in Christchurch,becoming the fifth country to play Test cricket. From 1930 New Zealand had to wait until 1956,more than 26 years,for its first Test victory,against the West Indies at Eden Park in Auckland. They played their first ODI in the 1972–73 season against Pakistan in Christchurch. New Zealand are the inaugural champions of WTC which they won in 2021 and they have also won ICC CT in 2000. The Basin Reserve,also known as the Cello Basin Reserve for sponsorship reasons,and commonly referred to as the Basin,is a cricket ground in Wellington,New Zealand. It is used for Test matches,and is the main home ground of the Wellington Firebirds first-class team. The Basin Reserve is the only cricket ground to have listed status with Heritage New Zealand,in recognition of being the oldest first-class cricket ground in the country. Historically,the ground has also been used for events other than cricket,such as association football matches,concerts and cultural events.

Bert Sutcliffe was a New Zealand Test cricketer. Sutcliffe was a successful left-hand batsman. His batting achievements on tour in England in 1949,which included four fifties and a century in the Tests,earned him the accolade of being one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year. He captained New Zealand in four Tests in the early 1950s,losing three of them and drawing the other. None of Sutcliffe's 42 Tests resulted in a New Zealand victory. In 1949 Sutcliffe was named the inaugural New Zealand Sportsman of the Year,and in 2000 was named as New Zealand champion sportsperson of the decade for the 1940s.
Jeremy Vernon Coney is a former New Zealand cricketer and current cricket commentator. An all-rounder,between 1974 and 1987 he played 52 Test matches and 88 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for New Zealand,of which he was captain in 15 Tests and 25 ODIs.
Ewen John Chatfield is a former New Zealand cricketer. A medium-pace bowler,though Chatfield played 43 Tests and 114 One Day Internationals for his country,he is also remembered for having been hit in the head by a ball while batting,causing him to collapse and need resuscitation.
Roy Ivan Harford is a former New Zealand cricketer who played in three Test matches against India during the 1967–68 season. He played first-class cricket in New Zealand from the 1965–66 season to the 1967–68 season.

Brian Frederick Hastings is a former New Zealand cricketer. A middle-order batsman,he played 31 Test matches between 1969 and 1976,scoring four centuries. He played first-class cricket for Wellington,Central Districts and Canterbury between 1958 and 1977.

A second first-class match was held there in the 1988/89 Shell Trophy when Northern Districts played Wellington. First-class cricket hasn't been played there since. Christopher Mark Brown,commonly known as Chris Brown,is a former Cook Islands cricketer,who previously played representative cricket for Auckland at New Zealand domestic level. Born in Rarotonga,Brown played his early cricket for Auckland under-age teams,and went on to represent the New Zealand national under-19s in several matches as a right-arm fast bowler. Making his first-class debut during the 1993–94 season of the Shell Trophy,he took ten wickets in his debut match,and represented the New Zealand Cricket Academy twice later in the season.

Rupert Peter Owens Drysdale is a New Zealand cricketer who plays for Bay of Plenty and Northern Districts. After playing for the Bay of Plenty team in the Hawke Cup since the 2009/10 cricket season,Drysdale made his first-class cricket debut for Northern Districts in April 2022,in the penultimate match of the 2021–22 Plunket Shield season. Due to an outbreak of COVID-19 within the team,seven players made their first-class debuts for the team in the same match,with Drysdale doing so at the age of 33.
