Christopher Grier (born March 24, 1970) is an American football executive who is the general manager of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL), a position he has held since 2016.^[1]^[2] Having been with the organization since 2000, Grier held various scouting roles with increasing responsibility with the Dolphins. He also has past experience in the personnel department of the New England Patriots, having served there from 1994–1999.^[3]

Early years

Grier's father Bobby was the associate director of pro personnel for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL) from 2000-2016.^[2] Prior to that, Bobby Grier spent several years with the New England Patriots, where he served in various roles, including as the running back coach, director of pro scouting, and vice-president of player personnel.^[4]^[1] Grier worked under his father with the Patriots until 1999, when the organization fired head coach Pete Carroll. His brother Mike is the current general manager of the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League, and a former professional ice hockey player who played for the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks, and Buffalo Sabres.^[1]^[3]

Grier attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he majored in journalism; while in college, he played football for two years and then spent his final two years as an undergraduate assistant.^[1]

Executive career

New England Patriots

Grier served as an intern for the New England Patriots in 1994 before being promoted to a regional scout in 1995. Grier's Patriots made the Super Bowl once in his tenure; in Super Bowl XXXI where the team lost to the Green Bay Packers 21-35. Grier has worked alongside head coaches Bill Parcells and Pete Carroll during his tenure in New England.

Miami Dolphins

From 2000 to 2002, Grier served as an area scout for the Miami Dolphins. In 2003, Grier was promoted to national scout and assistant director of college scouting. He held this position until 2007 when he was promoted to director of college scouting. In his first 15 years with the Dolphins (before becoming their general manager in 2016), Grier worked alongside head coaches Dave Wannstedt, Nick Saban, Cam Cameron, Tony Sparano, and Joe Philbin.

On January 4, 2016, Grier was promoted to general manager of the Dolphins. Five days later, Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator Adam Gase was hired as the new head coach for Miami.

In his first move as general manager, Grier traded the Dolphins' 2016 first round draft pick (eighth overall) to the Philadelphia Eagles for linebacker Kiko Alonso, cornerback Byron Maxwell and the Eagles' first round draft pick (13th overall). The Eagles traded the eighth overall pick in the 2016 draft, along with four other draft picks across the 2016, 2017 and 2018 drafts, to the Cleveland Browns for the second overall pick in the 2016 draft. The Eagles selected quarterback Carson Wentz, and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft.^[5]

During Grier’s tenure, the Dolphins have had four winning seasons and have made the playoffs twice: in 2016 (Grier's first year as general manager), where they lost 30-12 in the Wild Card Playoff against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and in 2022, where they again lost the Wild Card Playoff, this time against division rival Buffalo Bills. Grier has overseen 3 head coaching changes (Adam Gase, Brian Flores, and Mike McDaniel).

On December 31, 2018, Grier dismissed third-year head coach Gase and demoted fourth-year vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum as part of many organizational changes the team made following the 2018 season. On February 4, 2019, a day after Super Bowl LIII, Grier hired long-time New England Patriots' assistant Brian Flores as the team's new head coach.

On April 23, 2020, Grier selected Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, making Tagovailoa the highest-drafted quarterback the team has selected since Bob Griese in 1967.

On April 29, 2021, Grier drafted Tagovailoa's former teammate from Alabama, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle with the sixth overall pick and Miami linebacker Jaelan Phillips with the eighteenth overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. Grier's selections would turn out to be a success, as Waddle would break Anquan Boldin's record of receptions caught by a rookie, and Phillips would become the first rookie since Julius Peppers (2002) to record at least 6 sacks in a three-game span.

On January 10, 2022, Dolphins' owner Stephen M. Ross fired third-year head coach Flores due to the latter having a bitter relationship with both the front office and the roster. Ross decided to retain Grier for the 2022 season, effectively becoming the franchise's longest-serving general manager since Eddie Jones (1990-2004) and the fourth-longest-serving general manager in franchise history (behind Jones, Mike Robbie (1978-1989), and Don Shula (1970-1977)).

The 2016 Miami Dolphins season was the franchise's 47th season in the National Football League, the 51st overall and the first under head coach Adam Gase. The season saw the Dolphins trying to improve upon their 6–10 record from 2015. After a lackluster 1–4 start, the Dolphins would claim six straight wins, and finish the season on a 9–2 run. With their Week 15 win over the New York Jets, the Dolphins clinched a winning record for the first time since 2008, and clinched a playoff berth the following week after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos, ending their 8-year playoff drought. This made Gase the Dolphins' first rookie coach since Tony Sparano to end a year-long playoff drought and also lead them to a winning record of at least 10 wins. They were also the first AFC East team, other than the New England Patriots, to qualify for the postseason since the 2010 New York Jets. The 2017 Miami Dolphins season was the franchise's 48th season in the National Football League, the 52nd overall and the second under head coach Adam Gase. The team came off from a 10-6 record and a playoff appearance for the first time since 2008. They were seen as potential playoff contenders and looked to make consecutive playoff seasons for the first time since the 2000 and 2001 seasons. However, the team was affected by the loss of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who tore his ACL during practice and was ruled out for the season. The team turned to former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who came out of retirement to become Tannehill's replacement and team's starter. After Tannehill got injured, coach Adam Gase called former Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning about possibly coming out of retirement and taking Tannehill's place. However Manning later declined the idea of coming out of retirement. Gase was the QB coach and offensive coordinator of Peyton's Broncos between the 2012 and 2014 seasons. Additionally, the Dolphins were also one of the teams Peyton considered signing with following his release by the Colts in 2012. Later during the season, the team traded starting running back Jay Ajayi to the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2018 fourth round draft pick on October 31.

The 2021 season was the Miami Dolphins' 52nd season in the National Football League (NFL), their 56th overall, and their third and final year under head coach Brian Flores, and sixth under general manager Chris Grier. Despite a 1–7 start to the season, Miami then won the next seven games, becoming the first team in NFL history to lose seven straight games and then win seven straight games in the same season. The 7-game win streak was their first since the 1985 season. They also became the sixth team in NFL history to win four or more consecutive games after losing seven in a row, after the 2009 Cleveland Browns, 1994 New York Giants, 1993 New England Patriots, 1984 Green Bay Packers, and the 1978 St. Louis Cardinals. However the Dolphins were eliminated from the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year after their win streak ended in Week 17 to the Tennessee Titans, combined with a win by the Los Angeles Chargers.

The 2022 season was the Miami Dolphins' 53rd in the National Football League (NFL), their 57th overall, the first under new head coach Mike McDaniel, and seventh under general manager Chris Grier. It also set out with the acquisition of 3x All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill, who joined Jaylen Waddle as Tua Tagovailoa's receiving duo after breaking contract talks with the Chiefs and being traded in March.
