Letchford began playing guitar when he was 8 years old. He had over 6 years of private guitar lessons before applying to the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, majoring in the Guitar Craft program and then the Guitar Performance program, GIT. Along with this education, he also attended Berklee College of Music with a major in music.
While at the Musicians Institute, he formed Scale the Summit with his friend and fellow guitarist Travis Levrier, and drummer Pat Skeffington, whom they met there in 2004. They added bass guitarist Jordan Eberhardt to complete the line-up.[4]
Equipment
Letchford endorses several guitar and amplifier companies. In late 2016 Chris has collaborated with Kiesel Guitars and came out with his first Kiesel signature model the CL6/7/8, a headless guitar with a fender strat sort of body, using Seymour Duncan Sentient, Nazgul pick ups. For recording and playing live, he uses his custom Matt Artinger 7 string, as well as guitars he makes himself. He also plays a headless 7-string guitar with fanned frets, which was made for him by the Swedish company Strandberg Guitarworks,[5] and currently has a signature Strandberg Boden CL7,[6] which is built in partnership with Washburn Guitars' USA Custom Shop. His main amp was an Axe Fx Ultra until he upgraded to the Axe Fx II, through Mackie HD1221 wedges, Ernie Ball volume pedal, Ernie Ball strings, InTune Guitar Picks. As of their most recent 2013 tours he was seen with a Mesa Boogie Cabinet, Carvin Pre Amp, Axe FX II, Ernie Ball Volume Pedal and Mission Expression Pedal. Chris also uses EMG pickups, 57-7 and 66-7. Chris also uses Dunlop Strings (10-56), Dunlop Signature Chris Letchford Jazz III Picks (1mm) and sometimes he uses Seymour Duncan Pegasus/Sentient pickup set in some of his newer guitars.[citation needed] According to an interview he did with Gear Gods in 2016 he has switched from the AxFX II and has moved to the Line 6 Helix.
Personal life
Letchford identifies as a dog person and owned a brindle Great Dane in 2010;[7] he later stated he had two Great Danes.[8] Letchford announced in June 2014 via Facebook that he was engaged to his girlfriend of 9 years, author Mariana Zapata.
Fredrik Carl Thordendal is a Swedish musician, best known as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the extreme metal band Meshuggah, of which he is a founding member. Along with Meshuggah's rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, Thordendal was rated No. 35 by Guitar World in the top 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists of all time.
Isaac Delahaye is a Belgian guitarist and composer, best known as the lead guitarist of Dutch symphonic metal band Epica since 2009. Prior to that he was lead guitarist in the Dutch death metal band God Dethroned. Delahaye replaced former guitarist Jens van der Valk in God Dethroned after van der Valk left in 2004. He joined the band after a request from drummer and longtime friend Ariën van Weesenbeek and after several meetings with van Weesenbeek and Henri Sattler, Delahaye was welcomed into the band on 29 June 2004. On 15 January 2009, the official announcement came that Isaac was no longer a part of God Dethroned. Soon afterwards, an announcement came from the band Epica that proclaimed Delahaye as their recently hired guitarist.

Mårten Hans Hagström is a Swedish musician, best known as the rhythm guitarist for the extreme metal band Meshuggah. He joined the band after the release of their first album, which allowed Jens Kidman to focus on his vocal performances and give up rhythm guitar duties. He and fellow Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal are known for their complex rhythm guitar playing. Hagström has cited Rush, James Hetfield, Squarepusher, Autechre, Strapping Young Lad, and GISM as influences.
Björn Gelotte is a Swedish musician and songwriter, best known as the lead guitarist for Melodic death metal band In Flames. He originally joined the band as the drummer in 1995, and continued in this position during The Jester Race (1996) and Whoracle (1997). He switched to his current position on lead guitar after Glenn Ljungström left the band and played solely guitars since Colony (1999), sharing lead/rhythm guitar work with former In Flames guitarist Jesper Strömblad.

Scale the Summit is an American instrumental progressive metal band formed in Houston, Texas in 2004. The band comprises guitarist Chris Letchford, bassist Kilian Duarte and drummer Charlie Engen. They were signed to Prosthetic Records before the band decided to release their work independently. The band is influenced by other progressive acts such as Cynic and Dream Theater. The band gained notice as part of the Progressive Nation 2009 tour with Dream Theater, Zappa Plays Zappa and Bigelf.
Carving Desert Canyons is the second studio album by American instrumental progressive metal band Scale the Summit. It was released on February 17, 2009, through Prosthetic Records. The album was self-produced by the band and Tom Beaujour. It is the band's first studio release with the label. The cover art of this album is taken from The Wave, a sandstone rock formation in Arizona. The album's cover art was taken by a local Houston photographer, who sent them his portfolio of pictures to choose from; the eventual cover art was the first photograph Chris Letchford saw in the portfolio.

The Collective is the third studio album by American instrumental progressive metal band Scale the Summit. It was released on March 1, 2011, through Prosthetic Records and was produced Mark Lewis. It is the band's first studio release with the label. The title for this album was chosen to reflect the philosophy that guided the writing of the material – of many parts coming together to form a greater whole. The album's cover features a phyllotaxis spiral, a natural formation occurring in some plants, which Chris Letchford described as "a multitude of elements forming their own collective – and the inspiration for the album's title, as the band very often take inspiration from nature." It is the last release to feature original bassist Jordan Eberhardt, who left the band in early 2012 after no longer wishing to tour full-time. He was replaced by Mark Michell.

It is the band's first album with drummer Charlie Engen and bassist Kilian Duarte. It is also the band's first album to feature guest musicians.
The Migration is the fourth studio album by American instrumental progressive metal band Scale the Summit. It was released on June 11, 2013, through Prosthetic Records. The album was self-produced by the band and Jamie King. The album's artwork for The Migration was created by Duncan Storr. Chris Letchford stated the band wanted artwork that "fit the usual organic/nature theme that we are costumed [sic] to using with more of the color green," adding that he also admired the album covers of progressive rock band Yes. The album's sound was intended to be "organic and natural", and Letchford praised producer Jamie King for being in complete agreement with and understanding the group's goals. Guitars were recorded to a click track first, followed by drums and then bass. The mixing process was accomplished via email; King would send the group one entire mix of the album and the group would send him feedback in response. This was done five times before the album was considered finished.
Subjects is the seventh studio album by American instrumental progressive metal band Scale the Summit. The album was self-released on June 25, 2021, and was produced by the band's guitarist Chris Letchford. It is the band's first album that is not instrumental, featuring vocals performed by guest musicians. The album was elected by PopMatters as the 10th best progressive metal album of 2021.
