The Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (Czech: Křesťanská a demokratická unie – Československá strana lidová, KDU–ČSL, often shortened to lidovci is a Christian-democratic political party in the Czech Republic. The party took part in almost every Czech Government since 1990. In the June 2006 election, the party won 7.2% of the vote and 13 out of 200 seats; but in the 2010 election, this dropped to 4.4% and they lost all their seats. The party regained its parliamentary standing in the 2013 legislative election, winning 14 seats in the new parliament, thereby becoming the first party ever to return to the Chamber of Deputies after dropping out.

Jiří Čunek is a Czech politician who was the Leader of the Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party from December 2006 to May 2009. Čunek was also Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for Regional Development in Mirek Topolánek's Second Cabinet until January 23, 2009. Since 2006, Čuněk has been Senator from Vsetín and since November 2, 2016 he has been the Governor of Zlín Region.

Vlasta Parkanová Czech politician

Vlasta Parkanová, née Trnovcová is a Czech politician who served from January 2007 to May 2009 as the Minister of Defence and shortly as Minister of Justice between 1997 and 1998. She was Member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP) from 1997 to 2013.

Background

Miroslav Kalousek resigned as leader of the party in August 2006 after he started negotiations with Czech Social Democratic Party about coalition supported by Communist Party. [2] Jan kasal then became acting leader. Kasal refused to run. [3] Senator and Mayor of Vsetín Jiří Čunek announced candidature for the position of leader on 23 November 2006. [4] Both candidates introduced their positions on 25 November in Brno. While Čunek's speech was met with applause, Jílek received only lukewarm reactions. [5] Jiří Karas and Vlasta Parkanová announced their candidature on 27 November 2006. [6] [7]

Miroslav Kalousek Czech politician

Miroslav Kalousek is a Czech politician, former leader of KDU-ČSL and TOP 09, and has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP) since 1998. He served twice as Finance Minister in the cabinets of Mirek Topolánek and then again from 2010 to 2013 in the government of Petr Nečas.

The Czech Social Democratic Party is a social-democratic political party in the Czech Republic. It holds 15 seats in the Chamber of Deputies following the 2017 legislative election, losing 35 seats. The party has been led by Jan Hamáček since 2018. It has been a junior coalition party within a minority cabinet since June 2018, and was a senior coalition party from 1998 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2017.

Petr Pithart is a Czech politician, lawyer and political scientist who served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 6 February 1990 to 2 July 1992. He was also the Senator for Chrudim from 1996 to 2012 and served as President of the Senate from 18 December 1996 to 16 December 1998 and again from 19 December 2000 to 15 December 2004.

A legislative election in the Czech Republic took place on 28–29 May 2010 to elect the members of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic. The election had been expected to take place sometime before the end of 2009, but was postponed due to legal challenges. Before the election, the country had been governed by a caretaker administration headed by Jan Fischer. The Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was the front-runner of the election and its leader Jiří Paroubek was favourite to become the new Prime Minister.

The Government of the Czech Republic, led by Prime Minister Jan Fischer, is a caretaker government established after Mirek Topolánek and his government lost confidence vote in the Chamber of Deputies. Fischer, an independent statistician, was chosen as non-party candidate for the office of Prime Minister. Government ministers were recommended by Civic Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party and Green Party. Christian Democrats firstly supported the idea of establishing a temporary government until the next legislative election takes place. Jiří Čunek, leader of the Christian Democrats, later announced that his party would not nominate any candidate to this government but was willing to support it if they approve the government's programme. Regardless the decision of the presidium of the party, Miroslav Kalousek, Vlasta Parkanová and four other MPs, declared that they support new cabinet. Overally Civic Democrats nominated 6 Ministers and Prime Minister, Social Democrats 8 Ministers and Greens 2 Ministers.

Svoboda's victory was welcomed by Social democratic leader Jiří Paroubek because Svoboda represents left wing in the party.

Populars and Mayors

The Populars and Mayors was an alliance of Czech political parties, consisting of the Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL) and Mayors and Independents. Talks about a possible alliance of the two parties started in 2016, with the intention of participating in the 2017 legislative election, and becoming the "third power" of Czech politics. The alliance was dissolved in July 2017, before the election took place.

A leadership election for Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL) was held on 27 May 2017. Pavel Bělobrádek was reelected leader of KDU-ČSL. He received 227 votes of 270 delegates. His rival Jiří Čunek received 43 votes. Čunek announced his candidature on the day of the election. His candidature was speculated for months prior the election.

A leadership election for Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL) was held on 8 June 2013. Pavel Bělobrádek was reelected as the leader of KDU-ČSL. Zuzana Roithová and Marian Jurečka were nominated for the position but both of them withdrew from election. Bělobrádek ran unopposed and received 244 of 272 votes.

2018 President of the Senate of the Czech Republic election

Election of the President of the Senate of the Czech Republic was held on 14 November 2018. It was held after 2018 Senate election. Civic Democratic Party nominated Jaroslav Kubera, Mayors and Independents nominated Jan Horník and Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party nominated Václav Hampl. Incumbent President Milan Štěch doesn't seek reelection. It was the first time in the history of the Senate that more than 2 candidates run for the position. Senate factions usually came to an agreement about the new President in the past.

2019 Czech Social Democratic Party leadership election

A leadership election for the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was held on 1 March 2019. The incumbent leader Jan Hamáček was elected for second term when he received 433 votes while 57 delegates voted against him and 11 abstained.
