Christina Henderson (born October 10,1985) [1] is an American politician in Washington,D.C. who was elected to the Council of the District of Columbia as an at-large member in 2020. [2] Henderson previously worked for her predecessor,David Grosso,and served as a legislative aide in Congress. [2] Henderson is an independent,not registered with any political party.
Henderson was born in Brooklyn,New York. Her mother joined the U.S. Army when she was young,leading the family to relocate multiple times. She considers Washington,D.C. her first permanent home. [3] She attended Furman University,where she was the first black student body president,and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. [1] [4]
Henderson worked in D.C. Public Schools on teacher effectiveness and as Deputy Chief of Staff for Councilmember David Grosso. [5] [6] After leaving his office,Henderson worked as a legislative assistant for U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer before launching her campaign for the council. [6] It was the first campaign she had undertaken. [6]
As a candidate,Henderson said one of the first bills she plans to introduce is for ranked choice voting,as the current system favors incumbents. [7] She is a skeptic of "defunding the police," saying that the Metropolitan Police Department should keep its current size. [6] She supports tax increases on the wealthy and reforms to rent control. Henderson switched her party affiliation to run as an independent and received an endorsement from The Washington Post . [9] She garnered 15 percent of the vote to win the seat among 23 candidates. [2] [6] She ran using public financing,which capped the amount she could accept from individuals,and was a program created through legislation she worked on as a staffer. [10]
She and her husband,Nu,have a daughter. [1] They live in Petworth and have a rescue dog,Langston. [3] [11]
Vincent Bernard Orange,Sr. is a former American politician from Washington,D.C.,and former president of the D.C. Chamber of Commerce. An attorney and a certified public accountant,Orange represented Ward 5 on the Council of the District of Columbia from 1999 to 2007,and was an at-large member from 2011 to 2016. He lost the June 2016 Democratic primary election to Robert White. Although his term was not due to end until January 2,2017,Orange resigned from the council effective August 15,2016,in the wake of conflict of interest charges over his new employment at the Chamber of Commerce.
John K. Evans III is an American lawyer and politician who served on the Council of the District of Columbia from 1991 to 2020 before resigning due to numerous ethics violations. Evans served as the chairman of the board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) until its ethics committee found he violated conflict of interest rules. A member of the Democratic Party,he represented Ward 2 of Washington,D.C. from May 1991 to January 2020,making him the D.C. Council's longest-serving lawmaker. He ran for Mayor in 1998 and 2014,but lost in the Democratic primary both times.

She is the second female mayor of the District of Columbia after Sharon Pratt,and the first woman to be reelected to that position.

Initiative 77 was a voter-approved ballot initiative in Washington,D.C.,to phase out the special minimum wage for tipped employees as part of the national Fight for $15 campaign. In the June 2018 primary election,D.C. voters approved Initiative 77 by a margin of 56% to 44%;however,the D.C. Council repealed the initiative in October before it could enter into force. In 2022,a nearly identical Initiative 82 was approved for the November 8,2022 election.
On November 8,2022,Washington,D.C.,held an election for its mayor. Incumbent Democrat Muriel Bowser was elected to a third term. The Republican nominee,Stacia Hall,received 2,368 votes in the primary,and independent candidate Rodney "Red" Grant garnered 4,700 signatures to gain ballot access. Both appeared on the general election ballot along with Libertarian Party candidate Dennis Sobin. D.C. Statehood Green Party nominee Corren Brown did not appear on the general election ballot.

The Democratic Party retained its control of the city council and the council became majority female for the first time since the 1998 election.

Elections were held in four ward districts as well as for chairperson of the council and two at-large seats. Democrats remained in control of the council,electing six out of the seven positions that were on the ballot. Independent Kenyan McDuffin,formerly the Democratic councilperson for Ward 5,was also elected.
