CityLink Purple (abbreviated PR) is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Catonsville to Bullneck Road/Turner's Station Dundalk (the destination sign found on buses) mostly along the corridors of Frederick Road on the west side and Eastern Avenue on the east side, serving the communities of Yale Heights, Pigtown, downtown Baltimore, Fells Point, and Highlandtown.
The bus route is the successor to the 8 Catonsville, 10 Highlandtown, and 26 Sparrows Point streetcar lines. [2]
Route 10 was electrified in 1893 as a streetcar route between Roland Park and Point Breeze. [3] Between Roland Park and downtown Baltimore, the route was similar to that of the current Route 27. There were also branches to Union Avenue and Sweet Air industrial parks. From downtown to Point Breeze, routing was similar to that of today's route, with slight variations in the streets on which the trolleys operated.
In 1940, Route 10 was shortened to Highlandtown, and service to Point Breeze was provided on a new Route 20 shuttle. [4] Though today's Route 20 does serve the Dundalk area, the no. 20 Point Breeze shuttle was an unrelated service. The origin of the current Route 20 was as a service along Baltimore Street.
In 1959, Route 10 was converted to a rubber tire bus operation. Service was extended west to Pimlico and east to Sparrows Point after being combined with Route 26, which started operation in 1926 as a separate streetcar line, before its conversion to a shorter shuttle streetcar in 1950, with riders on other parts of the line being diverted to Route 10. Route 26 ended its operation in 1959, when a branch of Route 10 to Sparrows Point was added. [4] [5]
In 1982, Route 10 was split into two routes. The Route 10 designation was used for a line that ran from State Center (the future location of the State Center Metro Subway Station to the Dundalk area. A new Route 27 was formed that back then operated from Pimlico to Albemarle Street, serving the northern portion of this route. [3]
In 1992, the route to Sparrows Point was modified, and buses took Wise Avenue rather than the Peninsula Expressway. This was initially done because of a road closure, but MTA, finding a demand for bus service on Wise Avenue, did not change the route back.
In 2005, as part of the Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative, a comprehensive overhaul plan for the region's transit system, Route 10 was combined with Route 2, and extended west from downtown Baltimore to Catonsville. Under this plan, all trips were routed to the Bullneck Road loop in Dundalk. Service to Sparrows Point, which had low ridership and required a heavy taxpayer subsidy, was no longer provided, [6] and all other short branches on the route were discontinued. [7] In addition, a portion of the route between Lombard Street and the State Center Metro subway station was eliminated. Riders on Wise Avenue were instructed to use Route 4.
The combined route was initially identified as Route 2/10 during a transitional period. On February 5, 2006, it was renamed simply to Route 10.
On November 1, 2016, a route 10 bus was involved in a fatal crash with a school bus. Six people, including the drivers of both buses and four passengers of the MTA bus were killed. The crash is currently under investigation. [8]
As part of the BaltimoreLink overhaul, on June 18, 2017 Route 10 will be served by two different routes. CityLink Purple will take the entire western part of Route 10, and CityLink Navy will take the eastern part of Route 10, with the route moving through O'Donnell Heights. [9]
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is a state-operated mass transit administration in Maryland, and is part of the Maryland Department of Transportation. The MTA operates a comprehensive transit system throughout the Washington-Baltimore metropolitan area. There are 80 bus lines serving the Baltimore Metropolitan Area, along with rail services that include the Light Rail, Metro Subway, and MARC Train. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 52,922,000, or about 186,900 per weekday as of the first quarter of 2024.
CityLink Navy is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. It replaced Route 1 in 2017. The bus route is the successor to the 1 Gilmor Street, 2 Carey Street, and 2 Fort Avenue streetcar lines.
LocalLink 93 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in the suburbs of Baltimore. The line currently runs from the Lutherville Light Rail Stop to International Circle near Hunt Valley Town Center, serving the Timonium and Cockeysville areas.
LocalLink 70 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration between Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland. At most times, the line operates from the Patapsco light rail station in southern Baltimore County with short turns at Jumper's Hole in Pasadena. The bus route, one of the longest local routes operated by MTA, is the successor to the Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad interurban, and mainly operates along the parallel Ritchie Highway, serving Brooklyn Park, Glen Burnie, Pasadena, and Severna Park. When the Light Rail is not running, the 70 runs all the way to downtown Baltimore, mostly along Hanover Street.
CityLink Orange is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Catonsville, Maryland east through downtown Baltimore to the Fox Ridge community in Essex, serving the corridors of Edmondson Avenue on the west side and Eastern Avenue on the east, and the communities of Edmondson Village, Allendale, Rosemont, Patterson Park, and Eastpoint, and is one of the most heavily used bus routes operated by the MTA.
CityLink Red is a MTA BaltimoreLink bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the University of Maryland Transit Center to the Lutherville Light Rail Stop along the corridors of York Road and Greenmount Avenue, and is the most heavily used MTA bus line. The CityLink Red bus replaced Route 8 bus route due to BaltimoreLink, and is the successor to the 8 Towson and 7 Govanstown streetcar lines.
Route 51 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from the center of Towson to the Inner Harbor in Downtown Baltimore, serving the Charles Street corridor. Route 51 replaced Route 11 on June 18, 2017 due to the BaltimoreLink bus system overhaul.
CityLink Gold is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. It replaced Route 13 in 2017. The line currently runs from Walbrook Junction in West Baltimore to Canton, mostly along North Avenue. The line has two main branches, both operating to Canton: one that operates via Fells Point and the other via Linwood and East Streets. Both these branches serve Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additionally, selected trips on weekdays and Saturdays operate to the block of Milton Avenue, Federal Street, and Patterson Park Avenue.
Route 27 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from the Reisterstown Plaza Metro Subway Station in northwest Baltimore to Port Covington in South Baltimore through downtown. The line also serves the communities of Pimlico, Mt. Washington, Cross Keys, Hampden, and Cherry Hill, and the Greyhound bus terminal. The bus route is the successor to the 10 Roland Park, 12 Westport, and 25 Mount Washington streetcar lines.
CityLink Pink is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from Cedonia in northeast Baltimore to the West Baltimore MARC station.
Route 20 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line currently runs from Security Square Mall east through downtown Baltimore to Baltimore City Hall. The main roads on which the line operates are Old Frederick Road, Baltimore Street, Fayette Street, and Boston Street. The line serves the communities of Westview, Edmondson Village.
LocalLink Route 56 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs. The line runs between the Park and Ride station in White Marsh and Charles Center in Downtown Baltimore. In June 2017, LocalLink 56 replaced the former local bus Route 35, which connected the city's downtown area with White Marsh, to the east of the city, and UMBC to the west. Route 35 was the successor to the No. 3 Wilkens Avenue and No, 6 Monument Street streetcar lines.

The Maryland Transit Administration was originally known as the Baltimore Metropolitan Transit Authority, then the Maryland Mass Transit Administration before it changed to its current name in October 2001. The MTA took over the operations of the old Baltimore Transit Company on April 30, 1970.
LocalLink 29 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station in Northwest Baltimore to Brooklyn Homes in South Baltimore through the communities of Rosemont and the corridors of Hilton Street, Caton Avenue, and Patapsco Avenue. During peak hours, selected trips operate via Violetville Industrial Park.
LocalLink 89 is a bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore and its suburbs, mostly along Reisterstown Road. The line currently runs from the Reisterstown Plaza Metro Subway Station to the Owings Mills Town Center. The line replaced original Route 59 under BaltimoreLink, and was a split-off from Route M-9, and resembles the pre-1997 route of Route M-9. It is the successor to several other bus routes and streetcars.
LocalLink 62 is a bus route in the suburbs of Baltimore, United States. The line currently runs from the Essex campus of the Community College of Baltimore County to Turner's Station in Dundalk. The current route serves the Rosedale, Middle River, and Essex areas and the CCBC Essex and Dundalk campuses. The line was previously known as Route 4 prior to the launch of BalitmoreLink. LocalLink Route 62 replaced the entirety of Route 4 on June 18, 2017.

LocalLink 92 is a school-day only bus route operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line currently runs from Glen Avenue and Key Avenue in Northwest Baltimore to Smith Avenue and Copper Ridge Road in Mount Washington or Old Court Road and Scotts Hill Drive in Pikesville.
Route 46 was a limited stop bus route, identified as a "Quickbus", operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore. The line ran from the Cedonia Loop in Northeast Baltimore to the Paradise Loop, in Catonsville. Service operated every 15 minutes during rush hour only. The line served the corridors of Frederick Avenue in West Baltimore, and Sinclair Lane/Cedonia Ave in Northeast Baltimore including the communities of Yale Heights, and Gwynns Falls in West Baltimore, and Berea and Parkside in East Baltimore.
