Clay Johnson is a former Democratic technologist who played a role in prominent national campaigns.
In 2004, Johnson was the lead programmer for Howard Dean’s unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for president. [1]
After the Dean campaign ended, Johnson joined three other Dean for America staff members (Ben Self, Jascha Franklin-Hodge, and Joe Rospars), to found Blue State Digital, a company that provides technology services and online strategy for Democratic campaigns, including the 2008 Barack Obama Presidential Campaign. [2] In 2006, Blue State Digital was one of Fast Company’s Fast 50. [3] In 2007, Johnson was "asked to leave" the company due to issues with other members of the partnership. [4]
From 2008 until 2010, he worked for the Sunlight Foundation as director of Sunlight Labs, [5] an open source community that collected and organized public data. [6] In August 2012, Johnson became a Presidential Innovation Fellow and worked on a project called RFP-EZ, [7] a digital utility to improve the success rate of small IT firms in acquiring government contracts. [8] In 2014, Johnson was named a senior fellow of the Center for American Progress. [9]
Johnson co-founded the Department of Better Technology (DOBT), a for-profit company that provides technology services to government agencies. [10] DOBT was acquired by CityBase in 2017. [11]
Over several election cycles, Johnson contributed to Democratic political candidates including Brian Forde and Doug Jones in 2017, Michelle Nunn in 2014, as well as Zephyr Teachout in 2016. [12] Teachout was involved in informing Dean campaign leadership of Johnson's sexual misconduct during the 2004 presidential campaign. [5]
Johnson has been accused of sexual misconduct and mistreatment by multiple women during his tenure on the Howard Dean campaign and employment at the Sunlight Foundation. [5] In 2018, HuffPost reported the stories of several women who alleged Johnson engaged in sexual misconduct, including attempted rape, sexual assault and verbal abuse in the workplace. Johnson stated to HuffPost in interviews that his overall behavior during that period of his life "filled him with shame, hurt and regret", attributing some behavior to substance abuse. He disputed many details of the accusations made against him. [13]
Prior to his work in political campaigns, Johnson worked at Ask Jeeves, now Ask.com, as a technologist helping with web syndication. Along with John Petropoulos, Johnson invented the use of mouseover preview ability in search results for which they were granted a patent in 2006. [14]

Bill Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States (1993–2001), has been publicly accused of sexual misconduct, including rape, harassment, and sexual assault. Additionally, some commentators have characterized Clinton's sexual relationship with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky as predatory or non-consensual, despite the fact that Lewinsky called the relationship consensual at the time. Gray rape, also spelled as grey rape, is a colloquial description of sexual intercourse for which consent is dubious, ambiguous or inadequately established and does not meet the legal definition of rape. The term was popularized by Laura Sessions Stepp in her viral 2007 Cosmopolitan article "A New Kind of Date Rape", which says gray rape is "somewhere between consent and denial and is even more confusing than date rape because often both parties are unsure of who wanted what". The term "gray rape" has been criticized. Lisa Jervis, founder of Bitch magazine, argued that gray rape and date rape "are the same thing" and that the popularization of the gray rape concept constituted a backlash against women's sexual empowerment and risked rolling back the gains women had made in having rape taken seriously.

The Indian#MeToo movement began in late 2018 to manifest in areas of the Indian society including the government, the media, and the Bollywood film industry. In India, the Me Too movement is seen as either an independent outgrowth influenced by the international campaign against sexual harassment of women in the workplace, or an offshoot of the American "Me Too" social movement. Me Too began gaining prominence in India with the increasing popularity of the international movement, and later gathered sharp momentum in October 2018 in the entertainment industry of Bollywood, centered in Mumbai, when actress Tanushree Dutta accused Nana Patekar of sexual harassment. Sexual abuse by yoga gurus is the exploitation of the position of trust occupied by a master of any branch of yoga for personal sexual pleasure. Allegations of such abuse have been made against modern yoga gurus such as Bikram Choudhury, Kausthub Desikachar, Yogi Bhajan, Amrit Desai, and K. Pattabhi Jois. There have been some criminal convictions and lawsuits for civil damages.
The #MeToo movementin Pakistan is modeled after the international #MeToo movement and began in late 2018 in Pakistani society. The #MeToo movement emerged in China shortly after it originated in the United States. In mainland China, online MeToo posts were slowed by government censorship. To avoid the censorship, Chinese women using the #MeToo hashtag on social media began using bunny and bowl-of-rice emojis; "rice bunny" is pronounced mi-tu in Chinese. Feminist activist Xiao Qiqi originated the use of rice-bunny emojis for the movement. Another alternative is “River Crab” which indicates censorship. Generally, the #Metoo movement was only accessible to elite women and urban women.
