Clear Horizons Early College High School is a public secondary school located in Houston, Texas, United States. In this program[ vague ], {{citation needed span|an associate degree is completed simultaneously within the student's four years of high school. The program requires all its students to be on either the Distinguished Achievement Plan or the Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan. Students must take the highest level classes offered for each subject (e.g. AP, PreAP, or Dual Credit classes). Dual credit classes are semi-free for the students and therefore the school is known[ by whom? ] for helping economically disadvantaged students. Acceptance into the school is based on random name drawing of applicants via lottery system based on grades. [3]

History

Clear Horizons Early College High School was founded in 2007. The school is located on the South Campus of the San Jacinto Community College District. [1] It is the successor of Clear Creek Independent School District's Project ExCEL.[ citation needed ]

Clear Horizons' first graduating class in 2009 consisted of 12 students. Four of these graduates received their associate degree. [4] [5]

The Early College High School Initiative in the United States allows students to receive a high school diploma and an associate degree, or up to two years of college credit, by taking a mixture of high school and college classes. This differs from dual enrollment, where students are enrolled in a traditional high school and take college classes, whereas early college students take high school classes in preparation for full college workloads. At early colleges, students also have fewer high school classes because some of their college classes replace their high school classes. Early colleges differ from closely related middle colleges. ECHS students spend their school day at college, and go to their home school occasionally for events such as football games, homecoming, and prom.
