History
Northbrook High School was established in 1973 at Spring Woods High School's Campus in the T-Shacks. Northbrook High School's Campus opened during the 1974–1975 school year to ease overcrowding at Spring Branch and Spring Woods Sr. High Schools. When a dwindling student population caused Spring Branch High School to close in 1985, Northbrook took in a large number of Spring Branch students.
Northbrook was named a 1988-89 National Blue Ribbon School. [3]
In 2005, Northbrook received 'Academically Acceptable' as the Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating.
In 2020 Spring Branch Independent School District acquired 4.7 acres (1.9 ha) of formerly commercial land so it could build a detention pond to control flooding. [4]
In 2022, Dr. H. P. Hyder became the principal, replacing the longtime head, Dr. Antonio Avalos, in the summer of 2022. With this administration change came more stringent safety measures, including the requirement to wear an ID badge to enter the school.
Northbrook has never been to the playoffs in football in the school's history. The best football record was set during the 1981 season with a 7–3 record under then head coach Bob French, who was the offensive coordinator for the '78 Texas 4A State Champion Stratford Spartans.
The Raiders first head coach was Horace "Buzzy" Allert. He was head coach from the school's first season in 1974 until the 1979 football season. He was forced to retire due to knee problems he obtained during his playing days in the NFL and CFL. Allert finished his career at Northbrook with a 28–29–3 record, with his best season record at NHS was a 6-3-1 in '75 & '76.
After Allert, Bob French came in from Stratford two years after being part of the 1978 Stratford Coaching Staff. French finished his career at Northbrook with a 27–29–4 record, with his best season at NHS being the school record 7–3 in 1981. After French came Howell Ferguson, whom finished his career at NHS with a 20–38–1 record, with his best season being in 1988 with a 6–3 record, Northbrook's 2nd best season ever. One game was cancelled due to Hurricane Gilbert. The 1988 team fell one game short of the state playoffs by losing to Katy 21–9 late in the season.
Hernandez followed after Ferguson and finished his career at NHS after only 3 seasons with an 11–19 record; his best season at NHS was a 6–4 record in 1993. L.P. Jones took over at Northbrook in 1995 and stayed until 1998 finishing at NHS with an overall record of 10–30, with his best season being a 4–6 in '97.
Pat Alvarado took over at Northbrook from 1999 to 2005. Alvarado finished his career at NHS with a 9–61 record with his best two seasons being in 2000 & 2001 with a 3–7 record. After going 0–10 for two consecutive seasons in 2004 and 2005 the Northbrook Raiders led by new head coach Craig Cripps went 2–8 in 2006 and improved in 2007 with a 3–7 record and in '08 finished 1–7 after two games were cancelled due to hurricane Ike. Cripps finished his career at NHS 6-22.
After Cripps' departure to district rival Stratford, the Raiders finished the 2009 season 0–10 led by new head coach Ron Rogers. In 2010 the UIL announced that Northbrook would be placed in district 17-4A along with Stratford, Spring Woods, Brenham, Montgomery, Waller, Magnolia, and Magnolia West. In their first season in 4A the Raiders finished the 2010 season 2–8. Ron Rogers finished his career at Northbrook with a 2–18 record. He was replaced by former offensive coordinator Dave Cope.
Soccer
The Northbrook Raider boys' soccer program has enjoyed some success in the last 14 seasons under Coach Justin Wheeler. Jonathan Claydon became the Raiders Soccer head coach in the 2023 season and led the Raiders to the District Championship and later on the state playoffs but would lose the first round against the Lamar Texans. The Raiders have earned playoff appearances in 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2023. They have made the state playoffs as representatives of class 4A, 5A and 6A. [5] They were district champions in 2000, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2012, and 2023. They were a regional quarter-finalist in 2003 and a Regional Champion and 5A State Semi-Finalist in 2004. The Northbrook boys' soccer team competes in district 18AAAAAA along with Spring Woods, Stratford, Memorial, Klein, Klein Forest, Klein Collins and Klein Oak.
Stratford High School is a secondary school in Houston, Texas, United States. The school is one of four high schools in the Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD), the district's westernmost secondary school. Stratford High School serves several neighborhoods, including Westchester, Sherwood Oaks, Nottingham Forest, Nottingham West, Wilchester, Gaywood, Wilchester West, Yorkshire, Memorial Townhomes, Village on Memorial Townhomes, Memorial Way, Rustling Pines, Memorial Plaza, and the SBISD portions of Thornwood and Ashford Forest.
Harold Wade Phillips is an American football coach who is currently the head coach of the San Antonio Brahmas of the United Football League (UFL). He has served as head coach of the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, and Houston Roughnecks. He has also served as interim head coach for the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and the Houston Texans. Additionally, Phillips has long been considered to be among the best defensive coordinators in the NFL. In his long career, he has served as defensive coordinator in eight separate stints with seven different franchises. Multiple players under Phillips' system have won Defensive Player of the Year: Reggie White, Bryce Paup, Bruce Smith, J. J. Watt and Aaron Donald. Others under Phillips have won Defensive Rookie of the Year: Mike Croel and Shawne Merriman. In Phillips' lone Super Bowl victory, a defensive player would be named Super Bowl MVP: Von Miller.
Spring Branch Independent School District is a school district headquartered in Hedwig Village, Texas, United States in Greater Houston. The district serves portions of western Houston, including most of Spring Branch. It also serves several small municipalities known as the Memorial Villages in its jurisdiction, such as Hedwig Village and Spring Valley Village. A majority of the district lies within Houston city limits.
Spring Woods High School is a secondary school in Spring Branch, Houston, Texas, United States. The school, serving grades 9 through 12, is operated by Spring Branch Independent School District.
Kenneth Michael Stabler was an American professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 17 seasons, primarily with the Oakland Raiders. Nicknamed "Snake", he played college football at Alabama and was selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 1968 NFL Draft. During his 10 seasons in Oakland, Stabler received four Pro Bowl selections and was named Most Valuable Player in 1974. Stabler also helped the Raiders win their first Super Bowl title in the Super Bowl XI. He was posthumously inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.
Memorial High School (MHS) is a secondary school located at 935 Echo Lane in Hedwig Village, Texas, United States, in Greater Houston.
Gary Wayne Kubiak is a former American football coach and quarterback. He served as head coach for the National Football League (NFL)'s Houston Texans from 2006 to 2013 and the Denver Broncos from 2015 to 2016 before stepping down from the position on January 1, 2017, citing health reasons. Earlier in his coaching career, he served as an assistant coach for the Broncos, Texas A&M University and San Francisco 49ers. He was also the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens in 2014. He last served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings in 2020.
Creekview High School is a public high school located in the city of Carrollton, Texas, United States. It is classified as a 5A school by the UIL. It is a part of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District located in southeast Denton County. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.
Kliff Timothy Kingsbury is an American football coach and former quarterback, who is currently a senior offensive analyst and QB coach at USC. He previously served as the head coach of Texas Tech (2013–2018) and the Arizona Cardinals (2019–2022). Kingsbury is known for developing quarterback prospects including Case Keenum, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and Caleb Williams.
Edward G. Biles was an American football coach whose most prominent position was as head coach of the National Football League's Houston Oilers from 1981 to 1983.
Michael Wayne Huff II is a former American football safety. He played college football for the University of Texas and then played 8 years in the NFL, primarily with the Oakland Raiders, who had drafted him with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. At Texas he won a National Championship and was recognized as a unanimous All-American and the top college defensive back. In the NFL, he was 2nd Team All Pro in 2010. In his last NFL season, he played briefly for the Baltimore Ravens and then the Denver Broncos, with whom he went to Super Bowl XLVIII, a game he did not play in and the Broncos did not win. After retiring as a player, he returned to Texas as a coach.
Waco High School is a public high school located in the city of Waco, Texas and classified as a 6A school by the UIL. It is a part of the Waco Independent School District located in central McLennan County. In 2015, the school was rated “Improvement Required” by the Texas Education Agency.
Emory Dilworth Bellard was a college football coach. He was head coach at Texas A&M University from 1972 to 1978 and at Mississippi State University from 1979 until 1985. Bellard died on February 10, 2011, after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis since the fall of 2010.
Donald Wayne Hollas is a former American football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for six seasons during the 1990s. He played college football for Rice University and thereafter was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. Hollas also played for the Oakland Raiders.
The Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) is a public charter school in the Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston, Texas. It serves grades 6–12 and is an International Baccalaureate continuum school, authorized for Middle Years, Career-related, and Diploma Programmes. As of 2017 Dr. Valerie Hernandez is the director.
Allen Moore Boren was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Sam Houston State University from 1972 to 1973, compiling a record of 7–14.
Ty Hunter Allert is a former American football player. He graduated from Northbrook High School in Houston, Texas in 1982. He played linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Denver Broncos, and the Seattle Seahawks. The Chargers drafted him in the fourth round of the 1986 NFL Draft. The 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m), 233 pounds (106 kg) Allert is a former Texas Longhorns player (1982–85). He recorded 10½ quarterback sacks during the 1985 season. In 1991, Allert became a volunteer assistant for coach David McWilliams at Texas.
Michael Mitchell is a former American football safety who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 10 seasons. He played college football at Ohio and was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Mitchell spent four seasons each with the Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers, in addition to being a member of the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts for one season each.
John B. Connally High School is a public secondary school in Austin, Texas, United States. The school, which opened in 1996, serves 9-12 and is part of the Pflugerville Independent School District.
Brooks "Bubba" Jennings is an American college basketball coach at Arlington Baptist University. He is best known for his collegiate playing career when he suited up for Texas Tech University between 1980 and 1985. During his time as a Red Raider, Jennings recorded 1,727 points, 378 assists and 149 steals. As a senior in 1984–85 he was honored with the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, a national award given to the best college men's basketball player who is 6'0" or shorter. At the end of the 2012–13 season, after having served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Jennings was fired as part of a wholesale change in direction of the men's basketball department at Texas Tech.
