Climate change affects various aspects of the environment in Gibraltar.
According to the US Energy Information Administration, greenhouse gas emissions in Gibraltar amounted to 135 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per capita. [1] The methodology that behind the project was criticised by John Cortes, the Gibraltar Minister for health and the environment, because a large proportion of emissions classified as being of Gibraltar were due to the international shipping industry. Transport accounted for 44.6% of greenhouse gas emissions during 2020. [3]
An underwater heatwave was observed in the strait of Gibraltar in 2023. [4] Similar events are predicted to become more common by the World Meteorological Organization. [4]
In 2014, the Government of Gibraltar signed an 5 megawatt power purchasing agreement with Eco Wave Power, an Israeli company. [5]
In 2024, the Government of Gibraltar opened a tender for rooftop solar arrays for selected sites. [6]
