The Coastal Surge Drum and Bugle Corps was an Open Class (formerly Divisions II & III) competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Coastal Surge performed in Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions. [1]

History

Coastal Surge was founded in October 2011 by a group on the Atlantic Coast of South Carolina who wanted to build a drum and bugle corps that would not only provide a solid educational and entertainment program for its students, but would also be financially stable over the years. After laying a foundation for the organization, the decision was made in January 2013 to field an exhibition corps for a short tour.

Locating a viable rehearsal site, the corps came together with a charter membership of 54, mostly drum corps novices from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The initial tour of exhibition performances in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey met with favorable results for both the corps and the audiences. [2]

After the successful short exhibition of 2013, the corps elected to enter DCI competition in 2014 as an Open Class corps. After an evaluation of the organization by DCI, the corps was approved for competition, [3] and a show tour was scheduled, with the corps traveling to Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and ending at the DCI Open Class Championships in Michigan City, Indiana. On July 22, 2015 the corps announced that they had folded due to the lack of funding. [5]

A modern drum and bugle corps is a musical marching unit consisting of brass instruments, percussion instruments, electronic instruments, and color guard. Prior to competing in Division I, Southwind competed in DCI's Class A/Division II and was that division's World Champion in 1991 and 1992. Southwind performed at competitive and non-competitive SoundSport events in Alabama and surrounding states during the summer of 2014. The Music City Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Music City is a member corps of Drum Corps International.

Blue Devils B Drum and Bugle Corps

The Blue Devils "B" Drum and Bugle Corps is an Open Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Concord, California the corps is a member of Drum Corps International and has grown from a feeder corps for the World Class (formerly Division I) Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, to a full-fledged Drum Corps in its own right. The corps has won the DCI Open Class World Championship five times, having most recently claimed the title in 2016. With the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, they will be returning to Championships in Indiana in 2021.

Although the drum corps has not been in competition since 2005, the organization, based in Erie, Pennsylvania, remains active, sponsoring an Independent A class winter guard that competes in Winter Guard International (WGI) and the affiliated Three Rivers Winter Ensemble Association (TRWEA). The annual Lake Erie Fanfare DCI competition that premiered in 1983, ten years before the corps entered competition, is still held each summer.

The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps is an Open Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, The Battalion is the first competitive drum corps from the state of Utah and competed in its first season as a member corps of Drum Corps International (DCI) during the summer of 2016.
