The Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps, based in Austin, Texas. Genesis performs in Drum Corps International (DCI) competitions. [1]

Genesis was founded in September 2009 as a means for youth of the Rio Grande Valley to compete in drum corps, which they saw as "the next level of musical competition"[ citation needed ] beyond marching band. Success was far from certain, at a time when national and worldwide economics were causing the demise of dozens of long-established corps.[ citation needed ] After an examination by DCI to determine the group's organizational stability, in May 2010, DCI announced that Genesis was approved to compete in that summer's competitive season.
In its inaugural season, Genesis surprised many when it premiered at home in Texas. The corps then toured in Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio en route to the DCI Open Class World Championships in Michigan City, Indiana where the corps placed 9th in Open Class.
After its first year, Genesis' staff made the decision to have each season be a "rebirth of the corps,"[ citation needed ] combining new genres of music and visual ideas with the traditional drum corps idiom. In 2011 and 2012, the corps moved up in Open Class, placing 6th both seasons before moving on to World Class prelims, where they finished 30th and 29th. In 2011, Genesis won DCI's "Most Improved Corps" award for Open Class.[ citation needed ]
In 2013, the corps rose to a 3rd place Open Class finish. Genesis then competed in the DCI World Class Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, placing 23rd in semifinals, earning full DCI membership, and winning the World Class "Most Improved Corps" award.[ citation needed ] Additionally, Chris Magonigal was named DCI's Open Class Director of the Year.[ citation needed ]
In January 2014, Genesis announced that the corps would move its operations from Edinburg, Texas to Austin, Texas. Corps director Chris Magonigal stated: “With its centralized location, dedication to the arts, and its financial possibilities, Austin is the perfect city from which to operate our program.“[ citation needed ]
At the annual DCI meeting on January 27, 2017, Genesis was approved to compete as a World Class corps. [3]
Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) musical organization. Chris Magonigal is executive director, program coordinator, and corps director. Genesis also sponsors the Teatro Indoor Percussion ensemble, competing in the Winter Guard International Independent Open division.

Drum Corps International (DCI) is a governing body for junior drum and bugle corps responsible for developing and enforcing rules of competition and for providing standardized adjudication at sanctioned drum and bugle corps competitions throughout the United States and Canada. DCI is based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps based in Madison, Wisconsin. The Madison Scouts were one of the thirteen founding member corps of Drum Corps International (DCI), and are a two-time DCI World Champion. Until 2018, when the Madison Scouts featured a female performer for only the fourth time in their history, naming her the "first female full-member" of the corps, they had remained one of only two all-male corps. In July 2019, the Madison Scouts adopted a non-discrimination policy that expands membership to both genders to participate in the Madison Scouts, effectively opening the way for women to become members of the corps.
The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps based in Rosemont, Illinois. The Cavaliers were one of the thirteen founding member corps of Drum Corps International and is a seven-time DCI World Champion. The Cavaliers are the only active all-male corps in the activity.
The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps based in Concord, California. The Blue Devils are members of Drum Corps International (DCI). They have finished first or second since 2007, and have placed no lower than fifth since 1975. They also hold the record for the highest score in DCI history, winning the 2014 DCI World Championships with a score of 99.65. The Blue Devils are the current DCI Champions, with a record of twenty titles to date.

The corps was a Division I competitive junior drum and bugle corps in Drum Corps International (DCI) from 1993 through 2007. Prior to competing in Division I, Southwind competed in DCI's Class A/Division II and was that division's World Champion in 1991 and 1992. Southwind performed at competitive and non-competitive SoundSport events in Alabama and surrounding states during the summer of 2014. In early May 2015, DCI approved Southwind's return as an active Open Class corps.
