History

Pacific Crest was founded in 1993 to serve the youth in the eastern part of Los Angeles County. Marching only 33 members in its inaugural season, [2] the corps grew in size and ability while maintaining a local California profile. The corps did not perform outside its home state until traveling to Texas for two shows in 2000. The corps journeyed to the Northwest in 2002, and entered the national competition scene by attending its first DCI Championships at Orlando, Florida in 2003, where many drum corps fans unfamiliar with Pacific Crest were surprised as the corps reached the semifinal round. Although it now tours nationally each season, the corps has maintained a focus on servicing the Southern California region. Pacific Crest has advanced to DCI Semifinals in 2003, 2007–08, 2011–19, 2022 and 2023. [3]

In addition to performing in DCI, Pacific Crest has also performed at several independent events, including with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl [4] and in the 2019 Rose Parade.

Sponsorship

Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps is sponsored by the Pacific Crest Youth Arts Organization (PCYAO), a 501(c)(3) musical organization that has a Board of Directors, CEO, corps director, and staff assigned to carry out the organization's mission. Stuart Pompel serves as PCYAO's Chief Executive Officer, and has been involved with the organization since its inception. In addition to its flagship drum corps program, PCYAO has previously supported a winterguard unit (2002-2005) that competed in Winter Guard International (WGI) and the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC) circuits. The winterguard competed in the Independent World Class (2002), Independent Open Class (2003), and Independent A Class (2004-2005); the winterguard was a WGI finalist and WGASC gold medalist for the Independent A Class in 2004 [5] and 2005. [6] The organization also sponsors a suite of educational outreach programs, including workshops for marching band students and annual summer camps for current and prospective high school marching band student leaders. PCYAO receives a part of its funding from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. [7]

Color guards or flag corps are teams of performers who perform choreographed dances and routines with various equipment to enhance and interpret the music of a marching band or drum and bugle corps show. Color guard teams can be found in American colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, and independent drum corps. They use various equipment including flags, fake rifles, and sabres, along with other props. Most Color Guard groups are of mixed gender but some may also be single gender.

Winter guard is an indoor color guard sport and performance art derived from military ceremonies. Modern winter guard is a competitive, performance-based activity which incorporates choreographed staging, dance, and manipulation of equipment such as flags, prop rifles, and sabers. Unlike traditional color guard, winter guard performances and contests are held indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances typically last three to seven minutes and are generally accompanied by recorded soundtracks rather than live music. However, the use of live instrumentation and vocalization have grown in popularity. Winter guard is most present in the United States; independent units have also been formed in Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Winter guard ensembles often perform at judged competitions officiated by local and regional associations using criteria developed by Winter Guard International, host of the annual Winter Guard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. The World Championships event purportedly attracts in 60,000 visitors to the event annually. Scoring attempts to rank units on the repertoire and achievement of aspects of each performance such as unity, quality, range, precision, skill, design, and effect.
