Colin Benders (born 5 December 1986 in Utrecht) is a Dutch techno artist. He is also the founding figure of The Kyteman Orchestra.
Benders grew up in Sterrenwijk, Utrecht. Primary school was not easy for Colin; various diagnoses, like ADHD, were made. [1] When he was eight, he switched from his old school to the Kathedrale Koorschool Utrecht, where he got the chance to develop his musical talents. For a long time Kyteman was the precentor of the choir. He stopped singing at the age of fifteen.
After primary school Colin went to Secondary school for Young Talents, linked to the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he could specialize in playing the trumpet. The Royal Conservatory directly granted him special permission to go to their school, but after two years he also quit there.
At the age of eighteen, Colin moved to another part of Utrecht. He spent three years writing and recording his debut album The Hermit Sessions. After he completed the album, in 2009, he toured through Europe with his Kyteman's Hiphop Orchestra.
Since then, he has played and toured with Relax , [2] Krezip, [3] Voicst, [4] Wouter Hamel [5] and C-mon & Kypski [6] In October 2010 he played two songs with Sting, Desert Rose and All Would Envy. [7]
The Hermit Sessions was released in 2009 and the music was described as a mix of hip-hop and jazz laced with tender melodies and raw beats. The album was a great success in the Netherlands; It has reached the top five of the Dutch Album Charts, sold over 75,000 copies, and has kept a position in the charts for more than two years. With this album, they won all the major music prizes in the Netherlands. [8] [9]
The Kyteman Orchestra is a hip-hop group consisting of 18 musicians, opera singers and a choir. Benders described the group's sound as "a collection of sounds, somewhere between opera, hip-hop, drum & bass, electro, minimalism and all kinds of other genres that I can't even begin to describe." [10]
The Kyteman Orchestra performed at Dutch festivals and stages, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival [11] and A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise.
Dutch hip hop or Nederhop ("Netherhop") is hip hop / rap music created by Dutch speaking musicians in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium). Although the first Dutch rappers in Europe typically wrote in the English language, this began to change when Osdorp Posse gained a big following of fans. Merlijn Twaalfhoven is a Dutch composer. He graduated from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2003. Twaalfhoven is internationally active in creating innovative projects and writing new music for orchestras, choirs and chamber music groups. He collaborated with Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Holland Festival, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, the Dutch National Ballet and Springdance festival, among many others. With his non profit organization La Vie Sur Terre he frequently produces large scale projects on location with local artists and musicians, for example in Cyprus, Japan, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories, Syria, and Central Europe. Twaalfhoven is a member of the Alpbach Laxenburg Group. He was a speaker about the role of arts in conflict areas at Aspen Institute Washington and Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, CO. In 2014 and 2015, Merlijn Twaalfhoven created "Bridging The Divide", a conversation with Tomáš Sedláček and Gloria Benedikt, linking economics and the irrational, positioning artists as agents of change. He was co-founder of Citizen Artist Incubator together with Gloria Benedikt, which was funded by Creative Europe and brought together 30 artists in two editions. The 2016 of Citizen Artist Incubator took place at IIASA. Twaalfhoven was a speaker about the role of arts in conflict areas at Aspen Institute Washington, TEDx Amsterdam, the European Forum on Culture 2013, 2016 and Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, Colorado, U.S.A. In 2017 he founded the Turn Club.
