College of Fine and Applied Art (Khartoum)

The College of Fine and Applied Art in Khartoum is the only public art school in Sudan. Its predecessor was founded by the British administration in 1945 as School of Design in the former Gordon Memorial College (later the University of Khartoum). In 1951, it was incorporated into the Khartoum Technical Institute that became the Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST) in 1971, and the school was renamed College of Fine and Applied Art.

Some of the notable Sudanese artists who studied or taught at the college are Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq, Ibrahim El-Salahi and Ahmed Shibrain, also known internationally as members of the Khartoum School of Modernist art. Despite considerable setbacks caused mainly by the neglect of several governments since the late 1980s, the art school continues into the 21st century and is the place where many of Sudan's modern visual artists have started their artistic education. After the Sudanese Revolution of 2018/19, the college reformed its curriculum and teaching staff, and is contributing to social and political expressions of the country's artistic movements. [1]

History

During colonial times

To train art teachers for British-administered public schools of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, a Department of Arts was introduced in 1930 in the Bakhtalruda Teachers Institute. This was incorporated in the Institute of Education of the former Gordon Memorial College in 1943, and in 1945, a School of Design was established. Jean-Pierre Greenlaw, a British art teacher, became the first director of this school and became an influential figure in the country's artistic scene. [2] [3] In 1951, the school was moved to the Khartoum Technical Institute, and in 1971, it became the College of Fine and Applied Art in the Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST). [4]

From the beginning, the school was set up in the tradition of British art schools, offering courses in theoretical and applied arts in carpentry, architecture, painting, geometry and design. Its aim was to produce teachers for secondary schools and vocational training. From 1963 to 1977, professors and teachers from the Royal College of Arts, the Central School of Art and Design and the Slade School of Fine Art in the United Kingdom served as members of the evaluation committees and external examiners. [4] Until the 1970s, the curriculum comprised classes in western techniques with little interest in indigenous culture: Neither the ancient traditions of visual arts in Sudan nor African or Islamic art were taught. [5] [6]

After independence

After the country's independence in 1956, the first Sudanese artists trained at the school continued their studies in the United Kingdom, with some of them later becoming teachers at the college. [7] After the School of Design had opened in 1945 and up to the 1970s, an early generation of visual artists emerged, who incorporated both African and Islamic art traditions as well as inspiration by western modern art movements, trying to find their own Sudanese visual identity. [8]

In the 1960s, calligrapher Osman Waqialla started an artistic movement later known as the Khartoum School of Modernist art, [9] with Ibrahim El-Salahi, Ahmed Shibrain and Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq becoming internationally known Sudanese artists. [10] [11] Among other notable Sudanese artists who studied or taught at the college are Hassan Musa, Muhammad Omer Khalil, Musa Khalifa, Mo Abarro and Rashid Diab. [12]

In 1978, a modern complex for the college was designed by Sudanese architects Abdel Moneim Mustafa Ayoub and Omer Salim. It was constructed for approximately 600 students, with spaces for teaching, practical classes, administrative, social and residential facilities, with surrounding open spaces for exhibitions and recreational use. [13]

Following the military governments under Omar al-Bashir and their Islamist orientation, artists and artistic scenes suffered from a 30-year long period of very difficult political and economic constraints. Among other factors, this was marked by many artists leaving the country, US-imposed sanctions, [14] and the closing of many western embassies in the 1990s. The college budget and conditions for appointing teachers and training students severely suffered during this period, with standards of teachers' qualification and for admission of new students falling. Even though the college continued to exist, many young Sudanese artists had to develop their art in a socially restricted environment and were practically cut off from artistic innovation in the rest of the world. [10]

21st century

In the 21st century, the college is still suffering from inadequate budgets and a shortage of teaching materials and staff. [15] Responding to contemporary developments and needs of the society, it strives to embed its teaching of modern art and design technologies in programmes of sustainable development. This includes artistic training for documenting and reflecting social issues such as public health. [16] It also sees itself as a regional resource centre for Afro-Arab arts. [17] The different undergraduate courses offer specializations in painting, sculpture, graphic design, calligraphy, drawing, ceramic, textile, interior and industrial design as well as in printing and book binding. [18]

As Sudanese academic Ahmad Sikainga wrote in 2012, modern art movements in Sudan and their social background have not attracted much analysis by art historians. [19] During the Sudanese Revolution of 2018/19, however, the role of artists has been reported more often in international media. [20] Before, during and after the revolution, artists have creatively expressed their views on society and politics, while this expression had been severely limited by the former government of Omar al Bashir. [21] [22]

As an expression of their participation in the ongoing protests against the military government since 2019, students of the college exhibited a memorial sculpture representing the slogans Freedom, Peace and Justice. [23] In September 2021, the Documentation Centre of the college completed a training course for visual documentation in cooperation with the Sudan Memory programme and the British Museum. During the closing ceremony, professor Omer Mohamed Elhassan Darma paid tribute to the fighters and martyrs of the December revolution and said, "the students of the College of Fine and Applied Art played important roles through murals and wall drawings that reflected stories and details of the struggle of revolutionists". [24]

Sudanese literature consists of both oral as well as written works of fiction and nonfiction that were created during the cultural history of today's Republic of the Sudan. This includes the territory of what was once Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, the independent country's history since 1956 as well as its changing geographical scope in the 21st century.

Osman Waqialla, was a 20th century Sudanese painter and calligrapher, noted for his creative use of Arabic letter forms in his artworks, thereby integrating African and Islamic cultural traditions into the contemporary art of Sudan. This use of Arabic calligraphy as a modern, non-religious graphic form places Waquialla within the Arabic art movement that became known as the Hurufiyya movement.

Ibrahim El-Salahi is a Sudanese painter, former public servant and diplomat. He is one of the foremost visual artists of the Khartoum School, considered as part of African Modernism and the pan-Arabic Hurufiyya art movement, that combined traditional forms of Islamic calligraphy with contemporary artworks. On the occasion of the Tate Modern gallery's first retrospective exhibition of a contemporary artist from Africa in 2013, El-Salahi's work was characterized as "a new Sudanese visual vocabulary, which arose from his own pioneering integration of Islamic, African, Arab and Western artistic traditions."

Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq is a Sudanese painter and art teacher, known as one of the founders of The Crystalist conceptual art group in Khartoum. This group rejected common conventions in Sudanese modern painting of the 1960s and strived to find "an aesthetic and critical language that would emphasise the notions of pleasure and knowledge in order to permanently abolish differences and boundaries". Based on her artistic career spanning more than fifty years, Ishaq has been called one of the most important visual artists in Africa.

Photography in Sudan refers to both historical as well as to contemporary photographs taken in the cultural history of today's Republic of the Sudan. This includes the former territory of present-day South Sudan, as well as what was once Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, and some of the oldest photographs from the 1860s, taken during the Turkish-Egyptian rule (Turkiyya). As in other countries, the growing importance of photography for mass media like newspapers, as well as for amateur photographers has led to a wider photographic documentation and use of photographs in Sudan during the 20th century and beyond. In the 21st century, photography in Sudan has undergone important changes, mainly due to digital photography and distribution through social media and the Internet.

Cinema of Sudan refers to both the history and present of the making or screening of films in cinemas or film festivals, as well as to the persons involved in this form of audiovisual culture of the Sudan and its history from the late nineteenth century onwards. It began with cinematography during the British colonial presence in 1897 and developed along with advances in film technology during the twentieth century.

Khalid Albaih or Khalid Wad Albaih is a Sudanese political cartoonist, civil rights activist and freelance journalist, who grew up as member of the Sudanese diaspora in Doha, Qatar. He has published his social and political caricatures and articles mainly in Arab and international online media, and his graphic art has also been publicly exhibited internationally.

The visual arts of Sudan encompass the historical and contemporary production of objects made by the inhabitants of today's Republic of the Sudan and specific to their respective cultures. This encompasses objects from cultural traditions of the region in North-East Africa historically referred to as the Sudan, including the southern regions that became independent as South Sudan in 2011.

Hussein Shariffe was a Sudanese filmmaker, painter, poet and university lecturer at the University of Khartoum. After years of schooling in Khartoum and in Alexandria, Egypt, he studied modern history and fine arts in England, where he had his first exhibition in London's Gallery One in 1957. Back in Sudan in the 1970s, he worked both at the Ministry of Culture and at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Khartoum. In 1973 he began a second artistic career as filmmaker, producing several documentary films and cinematographic essays on subjects such as traditional rites or history in Sudan, as well as on life in exile during his later years in Cairo.

Alaa Satir is a Sudanese visual artist, known for her illustrations, murals and cartoons presenting images relating to women's rights, the Sudanese revolution of 2018/19 and other social and political issues in contemporary Sudan. Since her first exhibition in Khartoum in 2017, and especially through her street art highlighting the importance of women in Sudanese society, she has gained international reputation as an artist and activist for freedom of expression, social justice and women's rights.

Dorothy Griselda El TayibMBE was a British-born visual artist and cultural anthropologist, who was mainly known for her pioneering research on the traditional costumes as they reflect the culture and society of Sudan since the 1970s. She published her research in 2017 in the illustrated book Regional Folk Costumes of the Sudan.

Eythar Gubara, is a Sudanese freelance photographer and activist for human rights. She is mainly known for her documentary images of everyday life in Sudan and of events during the Sudanese Revolution. In her work, she has placed a special focus on images of women, as well as on social diversity in Sudan.

Sudan Memory is an online archive and cultural heritage project, provided by an international group of partners with the aim of conserving and promoting Sudanese cultural heritage. In the course of the project, digital reproductions of books and newspapers, photographs and films, visual art and architecture, as well as of other cultural objects in Sudan were created and published on the project's website.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Amna Elhassan</span> Sudanese visual artist (born 1988)

Amna Elhassan is a Sudanese visual artist and trained architect, who lives and works in Khartoum. Her artistic work is often focused on the perception of Sudanese women in public and private life, expressed in a variety of media, including printmaking and painting.

Ahmed Shibrain, also known as Ahmad Mohammad Shibrain was a Sudanese Modernist painter and Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Art in Khartoum.

Mohammad Omer Khalil is a Sudanese-born artist living in New York City. Born in a neighborhood of Khartoum, Khalil later studied at the School of Fine and Applied Arts, where he taught after graduating. He moved to Italy to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze where he studied painting, mosaics, painting frescos, and etching. He continued his studies in mosaics at the Academy of Fine Arts. Khalil moved back to Sudan where he briefly taught. He immigrated to the United States in 1967.
