The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Headquarters is a skyscraper in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that was completed on 13 February 2022 and became the tallest building in Ethiopia. It serves as the headquarters of the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, the country's largest bank. It also is the tallest building in all of East Africa. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Contents

History

Construction commenced in 2015 under a 5,300,000,000 Ethiopian birr deal with the China State Construction Engineering Corporation. [3] [5] The foundation stone was laid on 27 June 2015. [5] The building was then topped out in the second half of 2019. [6] Cladding work however has been delayed due to the foreign currency shortage in Ethiopia [6] that made it harder for local businesses to fund imports, thus, affected the bank's financial [7] as it still controlled most of the country's banking activities in 2020. [8]

The building was originally scheduled to be completed on 19 January 2019. [5] As of August 2018, construction of the building is scheduled to be completed in 2020. [2]

In February 2022, the building was officially inaugurated to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. [9]

Site

The building site is an 18,000 meter plot on Ras Desta Damtew Road in Addis Ababa. [5]

Design

The building is 209 meters tall with 46 stories, two 5-story podiums, and 20-metre deep underground parking lots. [1] [5] The building design includes 46 above-ground floors, a mezzanine level, a ground floor, and 4 basement levels. [5] The building have 150,000 square meters of floor area. [1]

Its design includes eight conference halls, an emergency waiting room for disasters, two restaurants on the top two floors, and a sightseeing tower. [5]

It is the tallest building in Ethiopia and East Africa. [3] [5]

Rail transport in Ethiopia is done within the National Railway Network of Ethiopia, which currently consists of three electrified standard gauge railway lines: the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway, the Awash–Weldiya Railway and the Weldiya–Mekelle Railway. Other lines are still in the planning phase. There is also an urban light rail system in the country's capital, the Addis Ababa Light Rail.

As of June 2021, it had about 1.1 trillion birr in assets and held approximately 67% of deposits and about 53% of all bank loans in the country. The bank has around more than 35,000 employees as of June 2022, who staff its headquarters and its over 1000+ branches positioned in the main cities and regional towns. The latter include 120 branches in the national capital Addis Ababa. With the opening of a branch in the Gechi in the Illubabor Zone, CBE's banking network has reached online 783 branches. The bank has reached more than 1950 branches as of 10 August 2022.

Shanghai Tower is a 128-story, 632-meter-tall (2,073 ft) megatall skyscraper in Lujiazui, Pudong, Shanghai. The 109-story, 528 m (1,732 ft) building constructed by China Construction Third Engineering Bureau is the tallest in the city, surpassing the China World Trade Center Tower III by 190 m (620 ft). On 18 August 2016, CITIC Tower surpassed China World Trade Center Tower III in height, becoming Beijing's tallest building. The tower structurally topped out on 9 July 2017, fully topped out on 18 August 2017, and was completed in late 2018, making CITIC Tower the tallest completed building of 2018. As of 2024, it is the tallest building with a rooftop helipad in the world.

Huda Tower is a skyscraper located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The 24 story building was completed in 2004, and houses the Ethiopia headquarters of the Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi-owned company MIDROC. Construction commenced in 1998, and ceased in 2004.

The Wegagen Bank Headquarters is a high-rise building and the headquarters of Wegagen Bank in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The most noticeable building in Addis Ababa's skyline, the building was inaugurated on 30 September 2017 after construction began in 2013, and has 107 meters height lying in 1,800 square meters in Ras Mekonnen Street near Addis Ababa National Stadium.

Ethiopian Electric Power Headquarters is a 62-storey office building under construction in the Kirkos district of Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city of Ethiopia. The building is located right on Mexico Square, and once completed, it is expected to become the tallest building in East Africa, as well as the second tallest in Africa.
