Gameplay

The gameplay of Content Warning bears similarities to Lethal Company and Phasmophobia . [4] Four players begin on an idyllic island and use a diving bell to descend into what is known as the "Old World", a zone shrouded in perpetual darkness that contains an abandoned town. The players' objective is to use a video camera to film "scary content", such as artifacts or dangerous monsters, while exploring the ruins. Players' oxygen supply and the camera's film are both limited, and at least one of the players must survive the excursion and return to the surface with the camera so that the film can be uploaded to "SpöökTube". Videos are scored with viewers, and the number of viewers also determines how much money is earned.

Players must pursue dangerous situations to acquire footage.

If the players meet the viewer quota within three days, they are given a new quota and can continue their career as content creators; if not, they lose the run and their progress is reset. Money can be spent on tools to make exploring the Old World easier and safer in order to produce more valuable footage. [1] [5]

Release

The game launched on April 1, 2024, and was available for free for the first 24 hours. Within twelve hours of the game's launch, it reached 50 thousand concurrent players on Steam. [5] The game reached an all-time high of over 200 thousand concurrent players in less than 24 hours after launch. [6] During the launch period, it was stated that the game was claimed by around 6.2 million Steam users. [7] By mid-April 2024, Landfall stated the game had sold more than one million copies atop those claimed while it was free. [8]

The game, requiring players to find and solve a number of puzzles hidden within updates of the thirteen games, led to the opportunity for players to release Portal 2 about 10 hours earlier than its planned release by playing games under the pretense of powering up GLaDOS, the sentient computer antagonist from the Portal series. The ARG's theme of potatoes is based on plot elements within Portal 2, specifically that for part of the game, GLaDOS's personality module is run off a potato battery.
