Segado Cortez "Cookie" Belcher (born June 25, 1978) is an American basketball player. He played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1996 to 2001 and set several school records. Since 2012, he is a coach in IMG Academy.

Early life

Belcher was born on June 25, 1978, in Mexico, Missouri. He went to Saint Brendan's Catholic School. He played basketball for the school in fifth grade through eighth grade. He played on the basketball team at Mexico High School. [1] [2] Belcher is a second-degree cousin of former NBA player current coach Tyronn Lue who also grew up in Mexico, Missouri.

College career

Belcher played for Nebraska from 1996 to 2001. In his freshman season, 1996–97, he averaged 9.2 points per game. He was the only Husker player to start all 33 games that year. He led the Big 12 Conference in steals per game, with 2.6, and his 87 total steals was a new Nebraska freshman record. The following season, Belcher started all 32 games and averaged 11.1 points. He led the team in steals, with 75, and was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive team. [3]

In 1998–99, Belcher averaged 11.8 points per game. [4] He also averaged 3.2 steals per game to lead the Big 12, and his 102 steals was a new NU and Big 12 season record. [3] In 1999–2000, Belcher injured his wrist early in the season, receiving a medical redshirt. He played in only four games during the season. [3] [5]

The following year, as a senior, Belcher led Nebraska with 16.4 points per game and 82 steals. He was also named to the Big 12 All-Defensive team. He finished his college career with 353 steals, which was the most in Nebraska and Big 12 Conference history. [3] In addition, he set school records for most career minutes played (4095), games played (131), and starts (129). [3] He ranked second in career assists (477). [1]

Professional career

Belcher was not selected in the 2001 NBA draft. [6] He played for Italy's Lauretana Biella from 2001 to 2005, [7] and for Israeli Bnei Herzliya from 2005 to 2010, before moving to Greek Maroussi B.C. (where he cooperated with his Israeli team partner for the last 5 years, Ousmane Cisse) and retiring after a year, finishing a decade of professional career.

Coaching career

In 2012, he joined IMG Academy. [8]

Eshaunte "Bear" Jones, is a college basketball player, who de-committed from the Oregon State Beavers. In June 2007, he announced his intention to pass on an oral commitment to Indiana University. In October 2007, he announced his decision to attend Oregon State University the following season after playing as a 5th year senior at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia. He would later de-commit from Oregon State after a coaching change. In June 2008, Jones signed financial-agreement paperwork with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. Because it was after the NCAA signing period, Coach Doc Sadler could not confirm at that time that he had accepted a scholarship. Once he cleared the NCAA clearinghouse process, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the 2008 fall term. On March 31, 2011, Jones announced that he was leaving Nebraska to take care of personal things back in Indiana with his family. After leaving Nebraska, Jones popped up at Division II Northern Kentucky.

The 2008–09 Nebraska Cornhuskers women's basketball team represented the University of Nebraska in the 2008–09 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Cornhuskers were coached by Connie Yori. The Cornhuskers are a member of the Big 12 Conference and did not qualify for the NCAA tournament. Those hopes were tempered with the loss of two-time first-team All-Big 12 forward Kelsey Griffin to a season-ending ankle injury in late-August. Despite playing without Griffin, the Huskers fought their way to a 9-3 record early in the season that included a dramatic come-from-behind win over No. 24 Arizona State on Dec. 28. Nebraska, which had received votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Top 25 for five weeks, knocked off a Sun Devil squad that went on to advance to the 2009 NCAA Elite Eight. However, just days after defeating ASU, the Huskers took another hit inside with the loss of junior center Nikki Bober to a season-ending knee injury. Without two of their most experienced post players for a final non-conference game at five-time NCAA Final Four participant LSU, the Huskers closed non-conference play at 9-4 with all four setbacks coming to 2008 NCAA Tournament teams, including three on the road.
