Education

Colina received her BS in 1993 and MS in 1994 at Simón Bolívar University in Venezuela. She earned her PhD at North Carolina State University in 2004 advised by her frequent coauthor Keith E. Gubbins, [2] [3] and subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. [4]

Career

Colina was a faculty member Simón Bolívar University before she joined Pennsylvania State University in 2007, [5] and then moved to University of Florida in 2015. [6]

There, she heads the Colina Group, the Computational Biophysics and Soft Materials Research Group at the University of Florida. The organization works to "understand and predict structure-property relations in functional materials, such as polymeric membranes, biomolecules, and alternative ionic liquids." [4]

Colina acted as the chair of the Computational Molecular Science & Engineering Forum (CoMSEF) of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in 2014–2016, after having been a CoMSEF liaison director in 2009–2011. [7] Colina was elected to the board of directors of the Materials Research Society (MRS) in 2019. [8] [9]

Colina is also on the editorial advisory board of ACS Macro Letters, [10] as well as Macromolecules. [11]

The Simón Bolívar University or USB, is a public institution divided in two branches, one in Miranda state and one in Vargas state, with scientific and technological orientation. The Simón Bolívar University is arguably the most prestigious science and technology university in Venezuela and one of the most important ones in South America. It is the most selective higher education school in the country admitting only the 95th percentile of its standardized admission test.

Computational Engineering is an emerging discipline that deals with the development and application of computational models for engineering, known as Computational Engineering Models or CEM. Computational engineering uses computers to solve engineering design problems important to a variety of industries. At this time, various different approaches are summarized under the term Computational Engineering, including using computational geometry and virtual design for engineering tasks, often coupled with a simulation-driven approach In Computational Engineering, algorithms solve mathematical and logical models that describe engineering challenges, sometimes coupled with some aspect of AI, specifically Reinforcement Learning.

Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) is an off-lattice mesoscopic simulation technique which involves a set of particles moving in continuous space and discrete time. Particles represent whole molecules or fluid regions, rather than single atoms, and atomistic details are not considered relevant to the processes addressed. The particles' internal degrees of freedom are integrated out and replaced by simplified pairwise dissipative and random forces, so as to conserve momentum locally and ensure correct hydrodynamic behaviour. The main advantage of this method is that it gives access to longer time and length scales than are possible using conventional MD simulations. Simulations of polymeric fluids in volumes up to 100 nm in linear dimension for tens of microseconds are now common.
