Coripe is a city located in the province of Seville, Spain. According to the 2006 census (INE), the city has a population of 1,436.

The village is known for the local Quema de Judas (Burning of Judas in English) holiday taking place on Sunday of Resurrection. Every year, the town denizens parade, shoot and burn a rag doll representing a figure deemed "despicable" by the locals. [2] [3]
Past examples include convicted and incarcerated embezzlers Rodrigo Rato and Iñaki Urdangarín, celebrities romantically linked to the Royal House such as Bárbara Rey and Eva Sannum, [3] and murderers such as Ana Julia Quezada [4] or Miguel Carcaño. [5] [3]
The April 2019 Judas burning ritual featured a dummy representing former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont; this choice, in the current volatile political climate and in the wake of the 2017–18 Spanish constitutional crisis, brought the town to the spotlight in a highly controversial manner. The 2017 Catalan regional election was held on Thursday, 21 December 2017 to elect the 12th Parliament of the autonomous community of Catalonia. All 135 seats in the Parliament were up for election. Carles Puigdemont i Casamajó is a Catalan politician and journalist from Spain. Since 2019 he has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). The 2017–2018 Spanish constitutional crisis, also known as the Catalan crisis, was a political conflict between the Government of Spain and the Generalitat de Catalunya under former President Carles Puigdemont—the government of the autonomous community of Catalonia until 28 October 2017—over the issue of Catalan independence. It started after the law intending to allow the 2017 Catalan independence referendum was denounced by the Spanish government under Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and subsequently suspended by the Constitutional Court until it ruled on the issue. Some international media outlets have described the events as "one of the worst political crises in modern Spanish history".

The National Call for the Republic is a pro-independence, big tent political party in Catalonia. It aimed at uniting pro-independence political parties and organisations throughout Catalonia towards the common goal of establishing a Catalan Republic, regardless of political ideology. Its members included both independent figures from the civil society and aligned to the Together for Catalonia (JxCat) alliance—such as Quim Torra or Jordi Sànchez—as well as prominent members of the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT), among others: former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, former regional ministers Josep Rull, Jordi Turull and Laura Borràs or party vice-president Míriam Nogueras.
The trial of Catalonia independence leaders, legally named Causa Especial 20907/2017 and popularly known as the Causa del procés, was an oral trial that began on 12 February 2019 in the Supreme Court of Spain. The case was tried by seven judges and was chaired by judge Manuel Marchena. Judge Pablo Llarena had previously coordinated an instruction between October 2017 and July 2018, as a result of which 12 people were tried, including the previous vice president Oriol Junqueras of the regional government and most of the cabinet as well as political activists Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart and the former Speaker of the Parliament of Catalonia Carme Forcadell. Some defendants remained in pre-trial detention without bail from the beginning of the instruction process and have thus already served part of their sentence.

Together for Catalonia is a Catalan political party established in July 2020 by former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, announced on 2 July as a result of the foundering of negotiations with the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT) over the re-organization of the post-convergent political space under the "Together for Catalonia" umbrella. The party's founding congress will take place between 25 July and 3 October, after being launched on 18 July with the public presentation of its imagery and corporate identity by Elsa Artadi and Marta Madrenas.
