Crews & Tangos is a gay bar located at 508 Church Street in the gay village in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1994., [1] the bar is renowned for hosting nightly drag shows. [2] [3]
The first floor of the bar serves as the main location for the "Miss Church Street" pageant in the CBC Gem series QUEENS . [4]
Crews & Tangos was connected to the murder investigation of Tess Richey. The night of Richey's disappearance in 2017, Richey and a friend visited the bar and security footage from the venue was used to outline the sequence of events during the court proceedings. [5]
In March 2020, news began to spread about a proposal for a new condo development where Crews & Tangos is located. [6] Concerned community members created a Change.org petition garnering over 30,000 signatures. [7] Following the outcry, Kristyn Wong-Tam (city councillor for Toronto Centre) conducted a preliminary report of the space, [8] and in February 2022, the City of Toronto granted heritage status to the buildings located at 508 and 510 Church Street. [9]
Church and Wellesley is an LGBT-oriented enclave in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is roughly bounded by Gerrard Street to the south, Yonge Street to the west, Charles Street to the north, and Jarvis Street to the east, with the core commercial strip located along Church Street from Wellesley south to Alexander. The Jack Layton Ferry Terminal is the ferry slip for Toronto Island ferries operated by the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division. Three ferry routes provide transportation between mainland Toronto and Centre Island, Hanlan's Point and Ward's Island in the Toronto Islands, with levels of service to each destination differing depending on time of year. The One is a supertall skyscraper currently under construction in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. If completed, it will be the tallest building in Canada. At a revised 306.3 metres and a revised 85 storeys, it will be taller than First Canadian Place, which has been Canada's tallest building since 1975. After working as a dancer with Cape Town City Ballet and Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, Brooke Lynn Hytes achieved international recognition for competing on the eleventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race; Brooke Lynn Hytes placed second, only to winner Yvie Oddly. Brooke Lynn Hytes is the first Canadian to compete in the series. Since 2020, Brooke Lynn Hytes has been a main judge on the spin-off series Canada's Drag Race, and is the first Drag Race contestant to become a full-time judge in the franchise.
Canada's a Drag is a Canadian documentary series that premiered on CBC Gem on March 7, 2018. The show was created by Peter Knegt and Mercedes Grundy. Each episode focuses on a drag performer from a different Canadian city, inclusive of drag queens, drag kings and transgender or non-binary performers. It is produced by CBC Arts.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted inequities experienced by marginalized populations, and has had a significant impact on the LGBT community. Gay pride events were cancelled or postponed worldwide. More than 220 gay pride celebrations around the world were canceled or postponed in 2020, and in response a Global Pride event was hosted online. LGBTQ+ people also tend to be more likely to have pre-existing health conditions, such as asthma, HIV/AIDS, cancer, or obesity, that would worsen their chances of survival if they became infected with COVID-19. They are also more likely to smoke.

Competing under his drag name, Priyanka, Suknanan won the first season of the reality competition series Canada's Drag Race in 2020. Sheldon Orlando McIntosh, known professionally as Tynomi Banks, is a Canadian drag queen. A staple of Toronto's queer nightlife scene since the 2010s, Tynomi Banks performed in drag for over a decade before competing on the first season of the reality competition television series Canada's Drag Race (2020) and later the second season of Canada's Drag Race: Canada vs. the World (2024).
