Cricket on 5 is a UK television programme on Channel 5 showing highlights of England's Test cricket, One Day Internationals (ODI) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20I). The programme was produced by Sunset & Vine. [1]
In December 2004, it was announced that Channel 4 would lose the broadcasting rights to live broadcasts of Test cricket after the end of the 2005 Ashes, with live coverage being awarded to Sky Sports exclusively. [2] Initially, the England and Wales ECB had announced that they were contemplating sharing the rights between Sky and Channel 4,[ citation needed ] but ultimately awarded the contract exclusively to Sky Sports.
Concurrently, the ECB announced that Channel 5 had gained the broadcast rights to highlights of all test, ODI and T20I cricket. [3] However, unlike the coverage by Channel 4, the contract did not include coverage of domestic cricket (County Cricket, or T20 Finals' Day). Channel 5 was the only broadcaster to bid for the rights to the highlights [4] despite not having broadcast cricket previously.[ citation needed ] In 2012, Channel 5 extended its contract until 2017. [5] This was subsequently extended by a further two years, until 2019, after which highlights and additional rights were transferred to the BBC.
Cricket on 5 initially took most of the personnel from Channel 4, keeping award-winning anchor Mark Nicholas along with analysts Simon Hughes and Geoffrey Boycott. The commentating team usually included a fourth commentator from the opposing country, for example Ian Bishop when England took on the West Indies and Matthew Hayden when England took on Australia. For the 2009 Ashes series, legendary Australian commentator, Richie Benaud joined the team. Former England captain Michael Vaughan joined the show in 2010. Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly joined the team when India toured England in 2018, and Mitchell Johnson and Mike Hussey joined the team for the 2019 Ashes series.
Initially, from 2006 to 2011, the programme was broadcast between 7.15 pm to 8 pm (45 minute running time). [6]
After 2011, the show was broadcast from 7 pm to 8 pm (60 minute runtime), which allowed for more coverage once advertisement breaks had been accounted for.
For a day/night game, coverage was shown at 12 am – 1 am.
Cricket on 5 was produced by Sunset & Vine, a specialist sports production company who also produced award-winning live coverage of England Test matches on Channel 4 from 1999 to 2005. [7]
In June 2017 it was announced that BBC Sport had secured the rights to be the free-to-air partner of the ECB from 2020. The BBC will cover 11 live matches from The Hundred, 8 matches from the women's domestic T20 competition, 2 Live England Men's T20 Internationals, and 2 Live Women's T20 Internationals. The BBC also secured the rights held by Channel 5 and will cover highlights of England Men's & Women's teams Test Matches, ODI, and T20 internationals alongside live radio rights and clip rights for the BBC Sport website. The final episode of Cricket on 5 highlighted England's win at the last Ashes test of the 2019 Ashes series. The programme ended with all members of the presenting team in front of the camera, thanking the viewers, and ending the association of Channel 5 with cricket. England Captain Joe Root also thanked Channel 5 for their support over 13 years.
Test Match Special is a British sports radio programme, originally, as its name implies, dealing exclusively with Test cricket matches, but currently covering any professional cricket. It broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 LW and local MW frequencies, BBC Radio Five Sports Extra (digital) and via the internet to the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. TMS provides ball-by-ball coverage of most Test cricket, One Day International, and Twenty20 matches and tournaments involving the England cricket team.
Katherine Helen Brunt is an English cricketer who currently plays for Yorkshire, Northern Diamonds, Trent Rockets and England. She plays as a right-arm fast bowler and right-handed lower-order batter. She has won two World Cups and one T20 World Cup with England, and has been named England women's Cricketer of the Year four times. In June 2022, Brunt announced her retirement from playing Test cricket. She played in 14 Test matches for England from 2004 to 2022.

She cites winning the World Cup in 2009 as a career highlight. She played as a right-arm fast-medium bowler and right-handed batter. She appeared in 8 Test matches, 83 One Day Internationals and 22 Twenty20 Internationals for England between 2001 and 2011. She played domestic cricket for Thames Valley and Berkshire.
Alison Mitchell is an English cricket commentator and sports broadcaster. She was the first woman to become a regular commentator on the BBC's Test Match Special, and has been commentating on men's and women's international cricket around the world since 2007. She also spent many years reporting and commentating on a variety of sports for BBC Radio 5 Live and Five Live Sports Extra, including Olympic and Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon, Australian Open, French Open and Open Golf. In March 2014, she was voted SJA Sports Broadcaster of the Year 2013 by members of the Sports Journalists' Association. She is also the first woman to have called men's cricket ball-by-ball on ABC Radio Grandstand in Australia.

She previously played for Somerset, Middlesex, Kent, Sunrisers and Oval Invincibles. She has appeared for the England Academy Women's team and the England Cricket Board Development Women's XI. She made her One Day International debut against Sri Lanka at Colombo on 15 November 2010 and played her first Twenty20 International game for her country four days later. In October 2021, Wilson announced her retirement from international cricket.
Test Match Sofa was a radio programme providing cricket commentary for all England test matches and selected One Day Internationals. The programme was available worldwide, and broadcast on the Sports Tonight Live channel serving as alternative commentary to the BBC's Test Match Special which is only available in the United Kingdom. In 2012 Test Match Sofa was taken over by The Cricketer magazine.
