Critical Equation is the tenth album by American psychedelic rock band Dr. Dog. It was released on April 27, 2018 on the Thirty Tigers label. [1] The album was met with generally favorable reviews, reaching 68 on Metacritic. [2]
After band member Dimitry Manos left the band for other projects and frustrations about how their previous label had handled the release of their previous two albums The Psychedelic Swamp and Abandoned Mansion, [3] the band decided to change their recording process, [4] recording exclusively on 16-track analog tape and worked with a new producer, Gus Seyffert, in a new studio, Sargent Recorders, in California in late 2017. [4]
On NPR's Live from Here percussionist Eric Slick stated “We were either going to break up or make our best record" given the stress of the production process. [5] [6]
The album was made available for streaming on OPB's website on April 23, 2018, 4 days before it was released. [7] Four tracks were also made available prior to the album's release: "Listening In" was released on January 15, "Go Out Fighting" on February 15, "Buzzing in the Light", on March 15, and "Heart Killer" on April 6. Eric James Marshall Slick is an American singer, songwriter and drummer. Slick released his debut solo album Palisades on April 21, 2017 to positive reviews from Consequence of Sound, Relix and Tidal, in which Greg Saunier of Deerhoof rated the album "10 out of 10 stars."

Samuel Benjamin Cohen is an American rock vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, artist, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. A founding member of the psychedelic rock and pop band Apollo Sunshine, he released several albums with the group in the early 2000s. In 2009 he formed the solo project Yellowbirds, releasing the debut album The Color in 2011. This release was followed by Songs from the Vanished Frontier in 2013. The first Sam Cohen record, Cool It, was released on April 28, 2015, on Easy Sound Records, and primary featured Cohen playing all of the instruments. It was then re-released on Danger Mouse's imprint of Columbia Records, 30th Century Records, on June 3, 2016. Cohen is also known for his original collages on the Yellowbirds album covers, and his collage animation videos.
The Hugs are an American indie pop and psychedelic garage rock band from Portland, Oregon, formed in 2007 by lead singer-songwriter Danny Delegato, while attending Cleveland High School. A self-described "pop" band, their music is primarily influenced by the 1960s British Invasion movement and post-punk. The Hugs have self-released eight studio albums.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra are a New Zealand psychedelic rock band formed in Auckland, primarily composed of singer, guitarist, and songwriter Ruban Nielson, and bassist Jacob Portrait. It is the band's fourth release on the Anti- record label, and is a revamped version of their unreleased debut LP. The album was produced and engineered by Nathan Sabatino.
Andrea Caravean "Dre" Babinski is a Los Angeles-based actor, singer, songwriter, violinist, and guitarist, best known as the indie-pop solo-act Steady Holiday. Other notable work from Babinski includes recording and touring as violinist and backing vocalist for Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, and as one-half of the musical duo Miracle Days. It is the opening track and first single from their third studio album, Relaxer, and was released as a digital single on 6 March 2017 by Infectious Music and Atlantic Records. The song was written by Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton, Thom Sonny Green and produced by Charlie Andrew. It features guest vocals from British musician Ellie Rowsell of Wolf Alice.
