[2] DATRI is one of the largest unrelated blood stem cell donors registry in India, [3] that helps patients with blood cancer and other fatal blood disorders to find a HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) matched Blood Stem Cell donor. [4] Blood stem cell transplant is a chance of cure for patients with blood cancer and other severe blood disorders. As of January 2023, DATRI has more than 5 lakhs [5] [6] voluntary donors registered and it has facilitated 1074 plus transplants worldwide. [7] [8] [9] DATRI operates across India. [1]

History

DATRI was founded by Dr. Nezih Cereb and Dr. Soo Young Yang in 2009. [10] [11] [12] [8] [13] The NGO works with a mission to save the lives of patients with Blood Cancer, aplastic anemia, Thalassemia and other severe blood disorders. [14] [15] [16] [17] [12] [18] In 2017 the foundation appointed Darasing Khurana, who was awarded Mr. India International in 2017, as its Brand Ambassador. [19] The organisation was started with the objective of finding willing HLA matched donor for every patient with fatal blood related disorders and in need of a blood stem cell transplant. [10]

DATRI is a registered member of World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) [10] and lists the HLA typing information anonymously in Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW), a search program of WMDA available to Transplant Centers globally [10] [20] [2] It is currently India's largest Blood Stem Cell Donor's Registry. [10] In June 2022 it created a milestone in the history of unrelated blood stem cell donations in India by facilitating its 1000th blood stem cell collection. [10]

In December 2019, DATRI celebrated 10 years of saving lives in Chennai. [11] So far 1074 donors from DATRI have given patients a second chance of life. As of January 2023, DATRI had over 5 lakhs registered donors. [6] [5] [11] [10] DATRI had been spreading awareness on registering as a Blood Stem Cell Donor through numerous drives and camps in educational Institutions, corporates and residential areas since its inception in year 2009. [10] These campaigns had resulted in creating considerable awareness in society among youngsters and professionals. [10] The campaigns helped in increasing the number of volunteer donors for donating blood stem cells to save the life of an unrelated patient. [10] Currently[ when? ] DATRI is India's largest adult unrelated blood stem cells donors registry with more than 5 lakhs registered volunteer donors [6] and has facilitated around 1074 donations to date including donations from International patients and also serviced patients from over 125 hospitals from across world. [10]

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a severe hematologic condition in which the body fails to make blood cells in sufficient numbers. Aplastic anemia is associated with cancer and various cancer syndromes. Blood cells are produced in the bone marrow by stem cells that reside there. Aplastic anemia causes a deficiency of all blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Fanconi anemia</span> Medical condition

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare, AR, genetic disease resulting in impaired response to DNA damage in the FA/BRCA pathway. Although it is a very rare disorder, study of this and other bone marrow failure syndromes has improved scientific understanding of the mechanisms of normal bone marrow function and development of cancer. Among those affected, the majority develop cancer, most often acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), MDS, and liver tumors. 90% develop aplastic anemia by age 40. About 60–75% have congenital defects, commonly short stature, abnormalities of the skin, arms, head, eyes, kidneys, and ears, and developmental disabilities. Around 75% have some form of endocrine problem, with varying degrees of severity. 60% of FA is FANC-A, 16q24.3, which has later onset bone marrow failure.

Hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is the transplantation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, usually derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood in order to replicate inside of a patient and to produce additional normal blood cells. It may be autologous, allogeneic or syngeneic.

Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a syndrome, characterized by inflammation in different organs. GvHD is commonly associated with bone marrow transplants and stem cell transplants.

A cord blood bank is a facility which stores umbilical cord blood for future use. Both private and public cord blood banks have developed in response to the potential for cord blood in treating diseases of the blood and immune systems. Public cord blood banks accept donations to be used for anyone in need, and as such function like public blood banks. Traditionally, public cord blood banking has been more widely accepted by the medical community. Private cord blood banks store cord blood solely for potential use by the donor or donor's family. Private banks typically charge around $2,000 for the collection and around $200 a year for storage.

This aligned register is known as the Anthony Nolan & NHS Stem Cell Registry. It also carries out research to help make bone marrow transplants more effective.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cell therapy</span> Therapy in which cellular material is injected into a patient

Cell therapy is a therapy in which viable cells are injected, grafted or implanted into a patient in order to effectuate a medicinal effect, for example, by transplanting T-cells capable of fighting cancer cells via cell-mediated immunity in the course of immunotherapy, or grafting stem cells to regenerate diseased tissues.

The Singapore Cord Blood Bank is Singapore's only public cord blood bank that collects, processes and stores donated umbilical cord blood for use in stem cell transplants. Its cord blood units may be searched for use by qualifying transplant centers around the world.

Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GvHD) is a rare complication of blood transfusion, in which the immunologically competent donor T lymphocytes mount an immune response against the recipient's lymphoid tissue. These donor lymphocytes engraft, recognize recipient cells as foreign and mount an immune response against recipient tissues. Donor lymphocytes are usually identified as foreign and destroyed by the recipient's immune system. However, in situations where the recipient is severely immunocompromised, or when the donor and recipient HLA type is similar, the recipient's immune system is not able to destroy the donor lymphocytes. This can result in transfusion associated graft-versus-host disease. This is in contrast with organ/tissue transplant associated GvHD, where matching HLA reduces the incident of the complication.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Peripheral stem cell transplantation</span> Method of replacing blood-forming stem cells

Peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT), also called "Peripheral stem cell support", is a method of replacing blood-forming stem cells. Stem cells can be destroyed through cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, as well as any blood-related diseases, such as leukemia, lymphoma, neuroblastoma and multiple myeloma. PBSCT is now a much more common procedure than its bone marrow harvest equivalent due to the ease and less invasive nature of the procedure. Studies suggest that PBSCT has a better outcome in terms of the number of hematopoietic stem cell yield.

The Gift of Life Marrow Registry is a public bone marrow and blood stem cell registry headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. Gift of Life facilitates transplants for children and adults suffering from life-threatening illnesses, including leukemia, lymphoma, other cancers and genetic diseases.

Bone marrow failure occurs in individuals who produce an insufficient amount of red blood cells, white blood cells or platelets. Red blood cells transport oxygen to be distributed throughout the body's tissue. White blood cells fight off infections that enter the body. Bone marrow also contains platelets, which trigger clotting, and thus help stop the blood flow when a wound occurs.
