DC Gay Flag Football League (DCGFFL) is a 501(c)(3) [1] nonprofit LGBTQ flag football league consisting of 20 teams in Washington, D.C. It is a member of Team DC, [2] which provides a network of sporting outlets for the LGBT community of the Washington Metropolitan area, and National Gay Flag Football League.
The DCGFFL has its roots in the 1990s when a group of gay men began to play seven versus seven pick up flag football at the National Mall on Sunday mornings. Another group that played near Dupont Circle later joined. In 1994, the league formed as an organized unit. [3] DCGFFL incorporated on April 23, 2009. [4] In September 2010, DCGFFL premiered in its first season as an official league. [5] It operates under the National Gay Flag Football League and competes in the National Gay Bowl. [6] [7]
League teams are composed of both men and women, as well as LGBT and straight players. Recent registration data shows approximately 30% of players identify as straight. [8] [9]
The League has also organized a recreation league comprising four to six teams. It is designed to prepare players for the main competitive teams in the DCGFFL. [10] The League is open to people of any orientation. More recently, the number of heterosexual players joining DCGFFL has increased. [11]
In 2010, DCGFLL had 90 players and seven teams during its first season. [5] In 2011, DCGFLL had 200 players and 12 teams during its second season. [5] In 2014, DCGFLL had approximately 275 players and 20 teams. [12] In 2015, DCGFLL had approximately 270 players and 20 teams during its 10th season. [10] In 2017, DCGFLL has more than 300 players and 22 teams during its 13th season. [8]
Currently, the Washington Generals, DC Admirals, DC Commanders, Delta Force, Washington Senators, and Washington Valkyries (the latter two participating in the Women's + division) are DCGFFL's all-star travel teams who compete annually at both Pride Bowl (Chicago) and Gay Bowl. [3] In 2022, DC Space Force represented the city in Gay Bowl XXII in Hawaii. Teams composed of DCGFFL members also participate in South Florida's Flag Football League's annual Florida Sunshine Cup, including three time (2017, 2021, and 2022) champions, DC Assassins. [13]

The League released a "Skins and Shirts" calendar in 2011 [14] and 2016, with proceeds going to support LGBT high school athletes in the local area. [5] [7] Every season, DCGFFL takes a weekend off from games to host a day of service to volunteer for the local community. [9]
The DCGFFL contributes annually to the Team DC Scholarship Fund, which supports local LGBTQ-identified student-athletes by awarding scholarships to support these impressive leaders as they continue their academic careers. [15]
A gay village, also known as a gayborhood, is a geographical area with generally recognized boundaries that is inhabited or frequented by many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. Gay villages often contain a number of gay-oriented establishments, such as gay bars and pubs, nightclubs, bathhouses, restaurants, boutiques, and bookstores.

NGLCC is the exclusive certifying body for LGBT-owned businesses known as LGBT Business Enterprises (LGBTBEs), and advocates for LGBT business inclusion in corporate and government supplier diversity programs. In October 2017, the organization changed its name from the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce to National LGBT Chamber of Commerce to better reflect the entire LGBT business community it serves.
Stonewall Democrats, also known in some states as LGBT Democrats, is a caucus within the Democratic Party that advocates for issues that are relevant to LGBT Americans. The caucus primarily operates through individual chapters or political clubs supporting LGBTQ rights and affiliated with the Democratic Party.
Cyd Zeigler Jr. is a commentator and author in the field of sexuality and sports. Zeigler co-founded Outsports and the National Gay Flag Football League. He had a featured part in the documentary F(l)ag Football (2015).
The rainbow flag or pride flag is a symbol of LGBT pride and LGBT social movements. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. Using a rainbow flag as a symbol of LGBT pride began in San Francisco, California, but eventually became common at LGBT rights events worldwide.

There has been only one player who has publicly come out as gay or bisexual while being an active player in the National Football League (NFL): Carl Nassib, who revealed himself as gay on June 21, 2021, while with the Las Vegas Raiders. Six former NFL players have come out publicly after they retired. In the 2014 NFL draft, the St. Louis Rams drafted Michael Sam in the seventh round, the 249th of 256 players selected, which made him the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL.
