DJ Skitz or Skitz is a British DJ and music producer. He was born in 1970 [1] in Cambridgeshire [2] and started DJing in 1991. [3] He has compiled a number of British hip hop compilations and other hip hop compilations. Along with Rodney P, he produced the first track to ever be played on BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2002, [4] when the station launched; the BBC called Skitz a "hip-hop star". [5] They also presented a weekly show on the station called "Original Fever", [2] [6] which formed the backbone of the radio station, until 2007. [7] The Independent considered it the "show of the week" on the radio station. [8] In 2008 he competed in the DMC UK DJ Championship. [9] He had also created his own record label, Titan Sounds. [3]

History

In 1996, Skitz released a single "Where My Mind Is At" with Roots Manuva, which launched both of their careers, being noticed in both the hip hop and jazz scenes, as well as by Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge. [10] The track was sampled by Dallas Austin on Monica's track "Gone be Fine" on her 1998 album, The Boy Is Mine . [1] In 1998, he released a second single, "Fingerprints Of The Gods", which was the only British track to feature in the Hip Hop Connection's top ten tracks of the year [10] and which The Independent called "impressive". Speaking to The Independent at the time, he remarked how the genre was entering a new era and how the quality of British Hip Hop in general was improving. [11] In 2000 he released "Dedication" featuring Rodney P rapping and the DJ, Deckwrecka; the single went on to win the best single at the UK Hip Hop awards in 2000. [1]

Countryman

Skitz's debum album Countryman, released in 2001 on Ronin Records, is considered "ground breaking" [12] in the British Hip Hop genre. Skitz told Billboard magazine that the album reflected his rural upbringing and that it "helps define the simplistic life most of us strive for". [1] Estelle, who was then unknown, featured in the album on the track "Domestic Science" [12] along with two other female MCs, Wildflower and Tempa. Estelle approached Skitz to create the tune, thinking it would be successful due to the 1990 single, "Ladies First" by Queen Latifah and Monie Love and because nothing similar had been made in the UK since the Cookie Crew in the 1980s. [1] Other artists on the album included Roots Manuva, Rodney P, Skinnyman, Phi-Life Cypher, Taskforce and MC Dynamite [13] [14] and the DJs Tony Vegas and Primecuts from the Scratch Perverts. [10] The Independent said the album provided "evidence of the rude health of the UK's hip-hop scene". [14] A BBC review said that Skitz "delivered a consolidation of talent and attitudes of a musical movement that has been both struggling and hugely underrated for too long" and that it was "perhaps the best illustration of the state of home grown hip-hop today". [15] The beats on the album were described as "a distinctive blend of breakbeat funk, jungle and reggae". [14] Dotmusic.com said that Taskforce's track "The Junkyard" did for Highbury Estate, what Mobb Deep and Nas did for Queensbridge. [16] Roots Manuva's "Inner City Folk" was based around a chorus sung by Valerie Ettiene from the acid jazz group Galliano. [1] In 2004, Stylus Magazine said that Phi-Life Cypher were "the stand out guest act" on the album. [17]

In June 2001, The Face ran a feature, including Skitz, which stated that there was a renaissance in British Hip Hop. [18] In July 2001, the Los Angeles Times reported on how after 15 years of British rappers mimicking their American counterparts, they had recently created their own style. Skitz was introduced in the article as a "prominent British hip-hop DJ" and in it he discussed why British Hip Hop had not been successful before and how it was different from American Hip Hop. [19] Later that year, Countryman was named the best UK Hip Hop album at the UK Hip Hop awards [20] and Estelle was awarded best female Hip Hop artist for her performance on the album. [21] This was at a time that there was an "astonishing increase in the numbers of great UK rap records being released". [16] Interviewed by The Guardian, Rodney Smith, also known as Roots Manuva, said he considers Countryman to be "one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time". [22]

UK rap, also known as British hip hop or UK hip hop, is a music genre and culture that covers a variety of styles of hip hop music made in the United Kingdom. It is generally classified as one of a number of styles of R&B/hip-hop. British hip hop can also be referred to as Brit-hop, a term coined and popularised mainly by British Vogue magazine and the BBC. British hip hop was originally influenced by the dub/toasting introduced to the United Kingdom by Jamaican migrants in the 1950s–70s, who eventually developed uniquely influenced rapping in order to match the rhythm of the ever-increasing pace and aggression of Jamaican-influenced dub in the UK. Toasting and soundsystem cultures were also influential in genres outside of hip hop that still included rapping – such as grime, jungle, and UK garage.

The Herbaliser is an English jazz hip hop group formed by Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba in London, England during the early 1990s. Although currently releasing on their own label and having previously been signed to !K7 Records, they were one of the best-known acts from the Ninja Tune independent record label. They have released 12 albums, including two DJ mixes: one for Ninja Tune's Solid Steel series and the other for Fabric's Live Mix series. The Herbaliser's album Same As It Never Was was their first release on !K7 Records. Their latest album Bring Out The Sound was released in 2018, on the BBE label.

Skinnyman is a British rapper who was born in Chapeltown Leeds, Yorkshire and moved to Finsbury Park, London at a young age. He is best known for his sole album Council Estate of Mind.

Blak Twang, who also uses the pseudonyms Taipanic and Tony Rotton, is a British rapper who grew up in Deptford, Lewisham, South-East London.

London Posse was a British hip hop group. According to The Daily Telegraph, they "finally gave British rap an identity of its own." London Posse member Bionic led the charge for UK and worldwide artists to use their own accents and languages rather than copy Americans and was the architect behind their biggest hit "Money Mad" introducing 'road style' to UK hip hop and mixing it with ragga/dancehall.

Benedict Okwuchukwu Godwin Chijioke, better known by his stage name Ty, was a Nigerian-British rapper. He released the albums Awkward (2001), Upwards (2003), Closer (2006), Special Kind of Fool (2010) and A Work of Heart (2018). Upwards was nominated for a Mercury Prize. Ty collaborated with musicians such as Shortee Blitz, Drew Horley, Tony Allen, Roots Manuva and De La Soul.

Phi Life Cypher were a British hip hop group based in Luton, composed of two MCs, Si Phili and Life MC, and DJ Nappa. The trio started making music together around 1996, and since have had much success on the UK underground circuit. Phi-Life Cypher made it to the final of Tim Westwood's Talent 2000 competition and ripping the mic on DJ Skitz's seminal posse cut 'Fingerprints of the Gods' projected them to the upper realms of the UK hip hop scene.

Rodney Panton, also known as Rodney P is an English MC, as well as a radio and television personality who first gained attention via the UK hip hop scene in the 1980s. A former member of UK hip-hop group London Posse, Rodney P is known for rapping in his London accent.

"Witness " is a song by British rapper Roots Manuva, released as the first single from his second studio album Run Come Save Me (2001). A hip hop song with influences of dancehall and funk music and an electronically-inspired bass line, it contains lyrical references to Roots Manuva's British cultural roots with a melody that deliberately resembles the theme song to TV show Doctor Who. Record labels Big Dada and Ninja Tune released "Witness " in various formats during July 2001.

Task Force are a British hip hop group from Highbury in London, England. The group is led primarily by two brothers Chester P and Farma G. However, the Task Force family, according to Chester P, also includes DJ Louis Slipperz, Ramson BadBones, Remus, D.Molish, Inja MC, Calculus, Merkamillion, Blinks and Marley. Task Force officially formed in 1999, releasing their debut album New Mic Order.

Simon Philbert, known professionally as Si Phili, is a British rapper. He was a member of the former UK hip hop group Phi Life Cypher, which split in 2012.

BBC Radio 1Xtra is a British digital radio station owned and operated by the BBC. It broadcasts black music and urban music, including hip hop and R&B and is a sister station to Radio 1. Launching at 18:00 on 16 August 2002, it had been code named "Network X" during the consultation period. At the time, the station was listed as "1 Xtra BBC" on many electronic programming guides. The station broadcasts from the 8th floor of Broadcasting House, shared with Radio 1 and the Asian Network.

Daniel Williams-Hashemi, better known by his stage name DanimaL is an English rapper from Sheffield, England, influenced by the boombap sound and conscious style hiphop. Described as a "high-viz clad mentalist" by UKHH, DanimaL has released two EP's and numerous singles. DanimaL achieved notoriety after releasing his somewhat controversial single "Adderall". Consequently, DanimaL signed to Sheffield-based Message of a Nation Records. He has featured on various well-known British hip hop YouTube channels including, but not limited to, GlobalFaction, JDZMedia, Ukhh, P110 Media and Northside Media TV. In 2019, he made a radio appearance on Itch FM which ranked 29th in the global old-school hip hop chart. DanimaL is vocal about his struggles with mental health and the bullying he received growing up. In an interview with the Star newspaper he opens up about his ADHD diagnosis which he describes as a "superpower" using music as an escape route to fuel his passion for success.
