Daddy Issues is an American grunge pop duo from Nashville, Tennessee, consisting of guitarist/singer Jenna Moynihan, drummer Emily Maxwell, and previously bassist Jenna Mitchell. The band is signed to indie label Infinity Cat Recordings. [1]

Early years

The band formed in January 2014 after Moynihan saw the words "Daddy Issues" graffitied on the wall of a now-defunct venue and mistook it for an all-girl punk band; upon discovering that no such active band existed, they decided to start their own. [2] The three met while attending Belmont University together. [3] In May of that year, Daddy Issues self-released their first single "Pizza Girl". Their second single, "Ugly When I Cry," went viral on Soundcloud, garnering nearly 300,000 plays. [4]

In March 2015, Daddy Issues performed at South by Southwest as an official showcase artist, [5] after which the band began recording an EP. [6] In May, the band performed as an official Canadian Music Week artist, despite being American. In their review of Daddy Issues' CMW show, Exclaim! said "if there is any justice in the world, [their songs would] appear on the soundtrack for every teen movie next year. Most of their songs were fun little tunes that set out to celebrate all the things that young women, teen girls especially, are shamed for: fangirling, obsessions, feeling things for the sake of feeling things, and eating a lot of pizza."

Later that May, it was announced that Can We Still Hang would be released as part of the limited edition Infinity Cat Recordings Cassette Series. [7] The first single from the album, "The Bruise," debuted on The Wild Magazine. [8] In June, Portland-based feminist magazine Bitch Magazine premiered the next single, "Unicorns & Rainbows," which they described as "a track about rejecting potential boyfriends and how girls are not actually made of sugar, spice, and everything nice." [9] Soon after, the band contributed a "witchy grunge" playlist for the magazine's weekly feminist mixtape column, Bitchtapes. [10]

First album and later releases

On June 30, 2015, Daddy Issues released their first album Can We Still Hang on cassette and digital download. The album was recorded by Jacob Corenflos of fellow Infinity Cat band Jawws, produced by Casey Weissbuch (Slanted, Colleen Green, Mitski), and mixed by Robert Ellis Orrall (Taylor Swift, Reba, Be Your Own Pet). [11] During the summer, Daddy Issues toured in support of Can We Still Hang, playing with bands like JEFF The Brotherhood, Colleen Green, and White Reaper. In September 2015, Paste Magazine profiled the band in their "The Best Of What's Next" feature, writing, "What makes Daddy Issues so refreshing lies in their lyrical content. Channeling the innermost feelings of a self-aware twenty-something girl in snappy one-liners is second nature for the troupe... The future of Daddy Issues is certainly an exciting one." [12]

The band released a split 7-inch with Louisville's White Reaper on Christmas 2015, along with two behind-the-scenes music videos for Consequence of Sound's Treehouse Sessions. [13] The next February, they began recording their full-length album at Converse's Rubber Tracks Studio with producer Jake Orrall (JEFF The Brotherhood, Colleen Green). [14]

In March 2017, Daddy Issues announced their new full-length vinyl release Deep Dream with the premiere of their new single, "In Your Head," on The Fader. [15] The album was produced by Jake Orrall and was released May 19 on Infinity Cat Recordings. [16]

Robert Ellis Orrall is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. Signed to RCA Records in 1980, Orrall debuted that year with the album "Fixation". His first Top 40 single was "I Couldn't Say No", a duet with Carlene Carter. By 1990, Orrall had found success as a songwriter, having penned Number One singles for Shenandoah and Clay Walker. He returned to RCA in 1991 and charted the singles "Boom! It Was Over" (#19) and "A Little Bit of Her Love" (#31), from his first country music album, Flying Colors. Orrall then joined frequent songwriting partner Curtis Wright in the CMA-nominated duo Orrall & Wright, recording one more album and charting two singles. They split up in 1994, however, and Orrall returned to his solo career, writing singles for Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, and Lindsay Lohan, as well as producing records for Swift, Be Your Own Pet, and Love and Theft. The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A. is the debut studio album by American country artist Donna Fargo. The album was released in May 1972 on Dot Records and was produced by Fargo's husband and manager Stan Silver. The album's title track became Fargo's first major hit and a crossover Country pop hit, reaching #1 on the Billboard country chart and the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. They have released five original LPs on the label Infinity Cat, one live album on Third Man Records, and assorted singles and splits with noted artists such as Ty Segall, Best Coast, and Screaming Females. They tour extensively and have played shows across the United States and internationally.

Diarrhea Planet is an American six-piece garage punk band from Nashville, Tennessee, United States, formed in 2009. The band is composed of singer-guitarist Jordan Smith, guitarist-singer Emmett Miller, guitarist Evan Bird, guitarist-singer Brent Toler, bassist Mike Boyle, and drummer Ian Bush. Diarrhea Planet has described its sound as "pop played through the filter of heavy metal" and have cited influences such as Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and Dokken.

Denney and The Jets is a rock band based in Nashville, Tennessee and is the namesake of band leader Chris Denney. Denney and The Jets have toured with The Growlers, Broncho, Those Darlins, Tristen, White Fang and has supported Alabama Shakes, The Ettes, David Allan Coe, Diamond Rugs, The Greenhornes and Nikki Lane. Chris Denney's rotating cast of backing bands have included members of JEFF the Brotherhood, Natural Child, PUJOL, Blackfoot Gypsies, Promised Land Sound and Clear Plastic Masks.

Infinity Cat Recordings is an independent record label founded in 2002 and based in Nashville, Tennessee. The label has released recordings from artists including JEFF the Brotherhood, Diarrhea Planet, Be Your Own Pet, Ed Schrader's Music Beat, and Daddy Issues. In 2011, the label was highlighted by British publication The Guardian, which wrote "forget the Grand Ole Opry; there are more thrilling new bands in East Nashville than anywhere else on earth [and] so many of their records have been released on the same label, Infinity Cat." In 2011, Billboard Magazine listed Infinity Cat among the 50 best indie labels in America.

Ed Schrader's Music Beat is an American two piece rock duo of Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice from Baltimore, Maryland. According to The Boston Hassle, the duo has "a gas pedal/brake pedal sonic narrative, careening without warning between cross-eyed tantrums and sultry, eyebrow-cocked croons." They have released albums on Infinity Cat Recordings, Load Records, Upset The Rhythm, and Famous Class Records. Touring with bands such as Future Islands, Ceremony, and Wye Oak, the duo has been described as "one of contemporary punk’s best examples of testing the possibilities" and has performed across the U.S. and Europe.

12 Bar Bruise is the debut studio album by Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It was released on 7 September 2012 on Flightless. It peaked at No. 14 on the ARIA Albums Chart after being released on vinyl in November 2018.

"Ugly When I Cry" is a song by American grunge band Daddy Issues. It is the second single released by the band. Originally released a non-album single in 2014, it was included in their debut LP, Can We Still Hang, after signing with Infinity Cat Records a year later.
