Daily Banglar Bani was a Bangladeshi national newspaper published in the Bengali language. [1] [2] [3] Banglar Bani had a secular ideology and was pro Bangladesh Awami League. [4] It has closed down. [5]

History

The Daily Banglar Bani started publication in 1969 by Hafiz Hafizur Rahman and Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani as a weekly backed by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [6] [7] Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, a politician of Bangladesh Awami League and the nephew of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. [8] Journalist Anwarul Islam Bobby supported Mani in founding the newspaper. [9]

During the Bangladesh Liberation war in 1971, the Daily Banglar Bani was published from Kolkata. [10] During the war, the office of newspaper in Dhaka was damaged by Pakistan Army shells which targeted opposition newspapers The Daily Ittefaq , and The People. [11] After the independence of Bangladesh, Banglar Bani started daily publication in Dhaka from 21 February 1972. The pro-Mujib paper received more in payments for government advertising than any other paper when the Awami League government was in power. [12]

Shahabuddin Chuppu, future president of Bangladesh, worked at the Daily Banglar Bani from 1980 to 1982. [13] Obaidul Quader is a former assistant editor of Banglar Bani. [14] Falguni Hamid previously worked as a reporter at Daily Banglar Bani. [15]

Sheikh Moni was a rival of Tajuddin Ahmed and would write editorials against him in the paper in 1974. [16] The newspaper was banned in February 1987 by the government of General Hussain Mohammad Ershad for accusing the government of supplying weapons to militias. [17] [18] In the 1990s, Islamic fundamentalist called for the newspaper to be closed. [19]

According to a 2007 extortion case by businessman Azam J Chowdhury against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, five million BDT of a 29.9 million BDT bribe was deposited in an account of Banglar Bani. [20]

Tarique Rahman, also known as Tarique Zia, is a Bangladeshi politician and businessman who is the acting chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since February 2018. Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was a Bangladeshi politician. He was one of the nephews of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. He was the founder of Mujib Bahini Bangladesh Liberation Force-BLF one of the major guerrilla forces of the Bangladesh Liberation War and also the founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League.

Previously, he served as the speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad from January 2009 to April 2013. He was the acting president after the death of Zillur Rahman in March 2013. The Khelafat Majlish, also spelt Khelafat Majlis, is a far-right Islamist political party in Bangladesh. The party was founded in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in 1989 by Deobandi scholar Azizul Haque along with Ahmad Abdul Qadir and former leaders of the National Awami Party and Tamaddun Majlish. Since its founding, it has only ever gained one seat in the country's National Parliament. The party split into two in 2005, with Azizul Haque's faction taking the name Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish.

Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim is a Bangladeshi politician who was a 8-term Member of Parliament representing the Gopalganj-2 constituency during 1986–2024. He is a Presidium Member of Bangladesh Awami League. He also served as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare during 1999–2001.

Obaidul Quader is a Bangladeshi politician who has been the General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League since October 2016. He was the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges during 2011–2024 and represented the Noakhali-5 constituency as a Jatiya Sangsad member during 2009–2024. He is also the Media Adviser for the Bangladesh Awami League and regularly conducts press conferences on their behalf. Previously, he served as the State Minister for Youth and Sports between 1996 and 2001.

The Sheikh family of Tungipara is one of the two most prominent Bangladeshi political families, other being the Zia family. The family primarily consists of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and their relatives. Their political involvement has traditionally revolved around the Bangladesh Awami League.

The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The officers were part of a conspiracy to assassinate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and first president of Bangladesh. Rahman and most of his family members were killed during the coup, with the exception of his two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana.

Sheikh Lutfur Rahman was a Bangladeshi serestadar, an officer responsible for record-keeping at the Gopalganj civil court in British India. His son Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first president of Bangladesh. Lutfar was also the paternal grandfather of Sheikh Hasina.

Matiur Rahman Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi journalist, editor and talk-show host. He is the editor-in-chief of the Manab Zamin, a Bengali language tabloid newspaper. Chowdhury also reports for Voice of America (Bangla) as a correspondent. He has hosted a late night chat-show, Ajker Sangbadpatra, on Channel i, a privately owned broadcast channel, since 2005.
