Athletics

Dalton's football team has a long rivalry with both the Chippewa Chipps and the Rittman Indians, both of which run back to their first meetings in 1925 and 1924 respectively. [2] This dates back to when the Wayne County B League only had four teams from Apple Creek, Doylestown (Chippewa), Rittman, and Dalton. Had Dalton fielded a team for three years in the 1940s and if Rittman had remained in the league through the 40s and 50s, both rivalries would most likely be more contiguous than the Orrville-Wooster rivalry. [3] The Chippewa rivalry is the second-most played rivalry in Wayne County after Chippewa/Rittman. [2]

Due to the recent success of all three teams, Dalton's strongest rivalry games as of late have been with the Smithville Smithies and the Waynedale Golden Bears. All three schools have combined to either share or outright win the WCAL football title 45 times from 1960-2021, and in that time frame there have only been 17 seasons where none of the three have contributed to a football championship. [4]

The 2016-2017 academic year was the first year in school history that featured two sports play in State semifinal games. Both the volleyball [5] and boys baseball [6] teams advanced to the Final Four. This was the baseball team's first trip since 2005 and the volleyball team's second trip in six years.

The Pioneer Conference was a high school athletics conference in northeastern Ohio. It was founded in 1977. It disbanded after the 2006–2007 school year. The schools joined and help create the Northeast Ohio Conference. The Pioneer Conference was formed in 1977 with six original members: Brecksville, Brunswick, Cloverleaf, North Royalton, Strongsville and Wadsworth. These schools had similar challenges in the late 1970s. They were outgrowing their conference opponents they left behind when the league formed; the Chippewa conference and the Cuyahoga County Conference. Their communities were also easily accessible from I-71, I-76 and I-271. In recent years Cloverleaf is the only school that has seen a continued decline in school size. Two high schools in the Berea City School District — Berea and Midpark — joined in 1979. These two schools were also part of the growing I-71 corridor of the late 1970s. Wadsworth left in 1984 for the Suburban League and was replaced by Medina two years later. North Ridgeville replaced Cloverleaf, which left to join the Suburban League in 1997.
