The Social Democratic Party is the largest political party in Romania, though in the European Parliament, it is the second largest by total number of political representatives, after the National Liberal Party (PNL). It is also the largest social democratic political party in the country. It was founded by Ion Iliescu, Romania's first democratically elected president at the 1990 Romanian general election. It is currently part of the National Coalition for Romania (CNR), which is a big tent grand coalition comprising also the National Liberal Party (PNL). The CNR formerly included the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ) until mid June 2023.
The National Liberal Party is a social-conservative political party in Romania. Re-founded in mid January 1990, shortly after the Revolution of 1989 which culminated in the fall of communism in Romania, it claims the legacy of the major political party of the same name, active between 1875 and 1947 in the Kingdom of Romania. Based on this historical legacy, it often presents itself as the first formally constituted political party in the country and the oldest of its kind from the family of European liberal parties as well.
Romania elects on a national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature. The president is elected for a five-year term by the people. The Romanian Parliament has two chambers. The Chamber of Deputies has currently 330 members, elected for a four-year term by party-list proportional representation on closed lists. The Senate has currently 136 members, elected for a four-year term by party-list proportional representation on closed lists.

Eduard Raul Hellvig is a Romanian political scientist, journalist and politician who served as director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) from 2015 to 2023. A former member of the National Liberal Party (PNL) and previously of the Conservative Party (PC), he represented Bihor County in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies from 2004 to 2008, and sat for Ilfov County from 2012 to 2013. In the Victor Ponta cabinet, he was Minister of Regional Development and Tourism in 2012. During 2007, he was Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Romania, a position he once again took up in 2013, and which he left upon becoming SRI director.
Ovidiu Ioan Silaghi is a Romanian politician. A member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), he became Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises in the second Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu cabinet.
The Democratic Liberal Party was a liberal-conservative political party in Romania. The party was formed on 15 December 2007, when the Democratic Party (PD) merged with the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD). On 17 November 2014 the PDL officially merged into the National Liberal Party (PNL), ceasing to exist. The PDL was associated with Traian Băsescu, who was previously leader of the PD and President of Romania from 2004 to 2014.
Miron Chichișan was a Romanian politician. He served as the Mayor of Zalău and as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania.
Mircea Diaconu is a Romanian actor, writer, and politician. First appearing on stage in 1970, and on screen two years later, Diaconu pursued a lengthy career in both formats, working with a series of prominent directors. He acted in some sixty films through the 2000s, and continued to act in theatre during the ensuing decade. He took part in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. In 2008, he entered electoral politics, becoming a senator, and subsequently serving a term as a Member of the European Parliament. In 2019, he ran for president, placing fourth.
Lia Olguţa Vasilescu is a Romanian politician, member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). She served as mayor of Craiova from 2012 to 2017, when she resigned to become Minister of Labor. She was reelected as Mayor of Craiova in 2020 and since then she has been serving as the mayor of Craiova.
Valer Dorneanu is a Romanian politician and jurist. A prominent member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Dorneanu was the president of the Chamber of Deputies between December 2000 and November 2004. He spent four additional years in the Chamber, departing at the 2008 election. From 18 October 2010 to 28 March 2013, he was adjoint to the Romanian Ombudsman office, in the military, juridical, police, and penitentiary areas. From 3 July 2012 to 23 January 2013, he functioned interimistically as the Ombudsman. From 2013 to 2022 he was a judge in Romania's Constitutional Court, for a mandate of 9 years, and the president of this institution from 2016 until the end of his mandate.
Siegfried Mureșan is a Romanian economist and politician, vice-president of the European People's Party (EPP) since November 2019, vice-president of the European People's Party Group in the European Parliament and member of the National Liberal Party (PNL). He was elected as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Romania in 2014 and 2019. Previously, he was a member of the People's Movement Party (PMP) between 2014 and 2018 and the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) before 2014.

Alexandru Nazare is a Romanian politician, Minister of Finance of Romania between December 2020 and July 2021, senator elected in the 2020 parliamentary elections and the special representative of the Romanian Government for Romania's candidacy for hosting the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre, 2020. Previously in 2012, he held the position of Minister of Transport and Infrastructure and in December 2008, he became the youngest representative of Romania in the European Parliament.
Ionel I.V. Săndulescu is a Romanian politician who stems from the National Liberal Party (PNL) and was previously elected senator in the Romanian Senate in the 1990–1992 legislature. He was one of the 12 re-founding members of the National Liberal Party (PNL) back in early 1990, alongside other former historical PNL members such as Radu Câmpeanu, Sorin Bottez, or Nicolae Enescu.
