Sven Simon (born October 9,1978 in Lahn,Hesse [1] ) is a German law professor and politician who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. He previously taught international and European law at Philipps University of Marburg. [2] In the 2019 European Parliament election he was the lead candidate for the Christian Democratic Union Hessen.
Simon started his academic career at the Justus Liebig University Giessen and the University of Warwick at which he acquired a 'Certificate in English Law' in 2003. After his First State Examination in 2005,he pursued a law doctorate with a scholarship of the Hanns Seidel Foundation. During his doctoral studies,he was a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg,at the European Commission in Brussels as well as at the World Trade Organization in Geneva. In 2009 he finished his doctoral thesis on the 'Liberalization of Public Services in WTO and EU Law' at the chair of Thilo Marauhn. [3] During his clerkships he worked at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy,the law firm Weber-Yacobovitch-Feder in Tel Aviv,at the law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Frankfurt and at the German Permanent Mission to the United Nations. [4] In 2010 he finished the Second State Examination,thereby qualifying as an attorney in the State of Hesse.
From 2010 to 2015 Simon was a postdoctoral researcher at the Chair for Public,International and European Law in Gießen. In 2011 and 2014 he was a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison. [5] In 2015 he finished his habilitation with a monography on the 'Legal Limits of the Federal Constitutional Court in the Process of European integration'. [6] With this he got the venia legendi to teach Public,European and International Law. From October 2015 to September 2016 he was a deputy professor at the Free University of Berlin. Since December 1,2016 he holds the Chair for International and European Law with Public Law at the University of Marburg. [7]
Since 2011 Simon has been a member of the Federal Board in the German Association for the United Nations (DGVN). In 2017 he became the federal vice-chairman. Moreover,Simon counsels governments and NGOs on questions of international and European law and serves as a trial observer in various international court cases. [8]
In November 2022,after plagiarism hunter Martin Heidingsfelder alleged that Simon had failed to identify sources for large parts of his dissertation the university opened an inquiry into rescinding doctorate degree. [9] In September 2023 the university closed the investigation. It concluded in accordance with the legal opinion of three external reviewers that Simon had in fact not plagiarized in his dissertation. [10]
In 2000 Simon joined the Christian Democratic Union and their youth wing Junge Union. Since then he held various positions within the party hierarchy. Currently he serves as deputy chairman of his party's chapter in the District of Giessen. [11] and as a member in his party's regional working group on European affairs. [12] Since 2006,he has been a member of the district parliament in Giessen,where he serves as deputy chairman of the CDU group.
In the European Parliament,Simon has been serving on the Committee on International Trade (since 2019) and the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (since 2021). [13] Since 2021,he has been part of the Parliament's delegation to the Conference on the Future of Europe. [14]
In addition to his committee assignments,Simon is part of the Parliament's delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula. [15] He is also a member of the Spinelli Group. [16]

University of Giessen, official name Justus Liebig University Giessen, is a large public research university in Giessen, Hesse, Germany. It is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the German-speaking world. It is named after its most famous faculty member, Justus von Liebig, the founder of modern agricultural chemistry and inventor of artificial fertiliser. It covers the areas of arts/humanities, business, dentistry, economics, law, medicine, science, social sciences and veterinary medicine. Its university hospital, which has two sites, Giessen and Marburg, is the only private university hospital in Germany.
Justus Liebig's Annalen der Chemie was one of the oldest and historically most important journals in the field of organic chemistry worldwide. It was established in 1832 and edited by Justus von Liebig with Friedrich Wöhler and others until Liebig's death in 1873. The journal was originally titled Annalen der Pharmacie; its name was changed to Justus Liebig's Annalen der Chemie in 1874. In its first decades of publishing, the journal was both a periodical containing news of the chemical and pharmaceutical fields and a publisher of primary research. During this time, it was noted to contain rebuttals and criticism of the works it published, inserted by Justus von Liebig during his tenure as an editor. After 1874, changes were made to editorial policies, and the journal published only completed research; later on, in the 20th century, its focus was narrowed to only print articles on organic chemistry, though it had always placed emphasis on the field. The journal was especially influential in the mid-19th century, but by the post-World War II period was considered "no longer as preeminent as it once was".
Wilhelm Hanle was a German experimental physicist. He is known for the Hanle effect. During World War II, he made contributions to the German nuclear energy project, also known as the Uranium Club. From 1941 until emeritus status in 1969, he was an ordinarius professor of experimental physics and held the chair of physics at the University of Giessen.

He currently holds the professorship for Public Law and International Law at the Justus Liebig University Giessen and heads the research group “International Law” at the Leibniz Institute Hessische Stiftung Friedens- und Konfliktforschung / Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF). Apart from this, he is a researcher at the Asser Institute and recently appointed as the Special Chair Arms Control Law at the University of Amsterdam.
Helge Reinhold Braun is a German physician and politician of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Between 2018 and 2021, he served as Head of the Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Affairs in the fourth coalition government of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Ingrid Miethe is a German professor of education at the University of Giessen. Her areas of focus include biographical research, the history of education, and connections between education and social inequality. Her book is Biografiearbeit: Lehr- und Handbuch für Studium und Praxis (2011) and she coauthored Globalisation of an Educational Idea: Workers’ Faculties in Eastern Germany, Vietnam, Cuba and Mozambique (2018). She instigated the founding of an ethics committee within the German Educational Research Association (DGfE) and has been the chair of this committee since.
Otto Eger was a German jurist and legal historian. As a professor at the University of Giessen, during the first half of the twentieth century, he was an influential teacher of several generations of legal scholars. He served terms as University Rector at both institutions. A committed nationalist, he backed national socialism which, in his judgement, opened up opportunities for revanchists who still hoped to find ways to undo the destruction of the Bismarckian German state in 1918/1919. More than six decades after his death, Otto Eger remained a controversial figure due to his engagement with the Nazi régime.

He is remembered for his work in experimental psychology.Traditionally the award is given to the recipient during the GISS conference in Giessen.
