Matthias Ecke (born 12 April 1983) is a German politician who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament for the Social Democratic Party since 2022. [1] [2]
Before entering the European Parliament,Ecke worked as advisor to Martin Dulig at Saxony's State Ministry for Economic Affairs. [2]
In parliament,Ecke has been serving on the Committee on Regional Development. [3] In addition to his committee assignments,he is part of the parliament's delegation for relations with Belarus. [3]
In 2024,Ecke was assaulted by a group of four young males while putting up campaign posters in Dresden-Striesen ahead of the 2024 European Parliament election in Germany and had to undergo an emergency surgery. [4] The same group attacked two teams of Green Party election workers in the same night,leaving a 28-year-old injured. [5]
A 17-year-old from the group of perpetrators,who a witness identified as belonging to the far-right,turned himself in to the police one day after the attack. [6] By 5 May,the Saxony police had also identified the three other perpetrators. [7]
German chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) said that the attack on Ecke was "depressing" and that democracy was threatened by such acts. [2] Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) warned "extremists and populists are stirring up a climate of increasing violence". Social Democrats blamed supporters of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) for the attack. [5]

Denazification was carried out in Germany from 1945 to 1949 by the Allied forces of World War II,with an attempt of eliminating Nazism from the country. However,various far-right parties emerged in the post-war period,with varying success. Most parties only lasted a few years before either dissolving or being banned,and explicitly far-right parties have never gained seats in the Bundestag post-WWII.

The 2018 Chemnitz protests took place in Chemnitz,in the German state of Saxony. In the early morning of 26 August,after a festival celebrating the city's founding,a fight broke out resulting in the death of a German man and serious injuries to two other people. Two Kurdish immigrants,one from Iraq and the other from Syria,were named as suspects. The incident reignited the tensions surrounding immigration to Germany,which had been ongoing since 2015,and the European migrant crisis. In response,mass protests against immigration were ignited by far-right groups. The protests spawned riots and were followed by counter-demonstrations.
The 2019 Social Democratic Party of Germany leadership election took place in the autumn of 2019 to elect the new leadership of the Social Democratic Party of Germany following the resignation of the Andrea Nahles on 3 June 2019. Although the leadership of the party is elected indirectly by a party convention,for the first time since 1993 the SPD held a vote by the membership to decide the candidates which the party's executive board will propose to the party convention. Though the convention was not obliged to elect the proposed candidates,the membership vote was considered politically binding. For the first time,dual candidacies were permitted,provided they comprised one man and one woman. Most hopeful candidates ran in pairs,and no single applicants advanced to the ballot.
