Rovana Plumb (born 22 June 1960) is a Romanian politician of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). She was appointed Minister of Environment and Forests (now Minister of Environment and Climate Change) on 7 May 2012. [1] From 5 March 2014 to 9 November 2015,she was the Minister of Labor,Family,Social Protection and Elderly in the Government of Romania.[ citation needed ] In March 2015,Rovana Plumb was elected President of the National Council of PSD. [2]
Plumb attended the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies (ASE).
Plumb served as a member of the Parliament of Romania from 2004 to 2007 and the European Parliament from 2009 to 2012. [3] In that capacity,she was a member of the Committee on Budgets (2007) and the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (2007–2012).
Following the 2019 European elections,Plumb rejoined the European Parliament and was elected vice-chair of the S&D Group,under the leadership of chairwoman Iratxe García. [4] She also joined the Committee on the Environment,Public Health and Food Safety.
Plumb was named in a corruption case in 2017,in which she was accused of aiding the leader of her Social Democratic Party (PSD) in an illicit real estate deal involving ownership of an island in the Danube River. [5]
The Social Democratic Party is the largest political party in Romania,though in the European Parliament,it is the second largest by total number of political representatives,after the National Liberal Party (PNL). It is also the largest social democratic political party in the country. It was founded by Ion Iliescu,Romania's first democratically elected president at the 1990 Romanian general election. It is currently part of the National Coalition for Romania (CNR),which is a big tent grand coalition comprising also the National Liberal Party (PNL). The CNR formerly included the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ) until mid June 2023.
The Chamber of Deputies is the lower house in Romania's bicameral parliament. It has 330 total seats to which deputies are elected by direct popular vote using party-list proportional representation to serve four-year terms. Additionally,the organisation of each national ethnic minority is entitled to a seat in the Chamber.
The Democratic Party was a social democratic and,later on,liberal conservative political party in Romania. In January 2008,it merged with the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD),a splinter group of the National Liberal Party (PNL),to form the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL).
