Darius Dickson Ishaku (born 30 July 1954) is a Nigerian architect, urban planner, university lecturer and politician. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and served as the governor of Taraba State from May 2015 to May 2023. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Early life

Ishaku was born on 30 July 1954 to Mr Ishaku Istifanus and Mrs Naomi at Lupwe in Ussa Local Government Area of Taraba State. He is the fifth of ten children from his family, all of whom are members of the Christian Reformed Church of Nigeria.

The young Darius was enrolled into St Bartholomew's Primary school, Wusasa, Zaria, in 1961, and graduated in 1967.

He then proceeded to famous St. Paul's College Kufena, Zaria, for his secondary education, in 1972 and passed out in flying colours, obtaining West African Examination Certificate (WASC). He secured admission into the school of basic studies in prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in the same year (1972), for his advance Level education which was then a requirement for gaining admission into the university, and he passed out in 1974. He proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) where he studied and obtained a Bachelor's and a master's degree in Architecture, he went further to obtain an additional master's degree in Urban and regional planning. Darius is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA) and also a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (FNITP).

Political career

Ishaku was previously the supervising minister for power, supervising minister for environment and the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs before he resigned to contest in the 2015 Taraba State gubernatorial election. He won the initial gubernatorial election against Aisha Jumai Alhassan of APC and David Sabo Kente of SDP, and was elected Governor of Taraba State after winning the subsequent re-run election. Darius won the 2015 election but was in a court battle with his opponent, senator Aisha Jumai Alhassan who took him to court and after a series of cases, Darius was declared the winner of the governorship election by the Supreme Court in early 2016. Darius Ishaku was again successful, for his second run, in the gubernatorial election of March 2019, defeating his closest rival Alhaji Abubakar Sani Danladi of the All Progressives Congress by over 150,000 votes. [9] [10] [11]

In the 2023 Senate election, a political newcomer David Jimkuta, polled 85,415 votes to defeat the incumbent governor Ishaku who scored 45,708 votes in the race for Taraba South Senatorial District. [12]

Award

In October 2022, a Nigerian national honour of Commander Of The Order Of The Niger (CON) was conferred on him by President Muhammadu Buhari. [13]

Haruna Manu is a Nigerian politician who is the current senator representing Taraba Central Senatorial District since 2023. He previously served as the deputy governor of Taraba State from 2015 to 2023, and as member of the House of Representatives for Bali/Gassol Federal Constituency from 2011 to 2015. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The 2019 Taraba State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. Incumbent People's Democratic Party Governor Darius Ishaku won re-election for a second term in 12 local government areas, defeating former acting governor and All Progressives Congress's Sani Danladi who won in the remaining four with a margin of 157,69[8] votes, and several minor party candidates.

The 2019 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three were held on 2 March 2019 with the election for Rivers State being postponed until 4 April, while the Kogi State and Bayelsa State elections were both held on 16 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2015.

The 2015 Taraba State gubernatorial election was the 6th gubernatorial election of Taraba State. Held on April 11, 2015 and April 25, 2015 due to inconclusive, the People's Democratic Party nominee Darius Ishaku won the election, defeating Aisha Alhassan of the All Progressives Congress.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

David Sabo Kente, popularly known as DSK is a Nigerian businessman, politician and philanthropist who is the founder and CEO of "DSK Group International Ltd" and the NGO "DSK Foundation". He was the candidate of SDP in the 2015 Taraba State Gubernatorial election before he joined the All Progressives Congress in 2016. He has once served as the National Assembly's director of finance. He is currently a member of the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) and the chairman Board of Trustees of the Northeast Development Education Endowment Fund.

The 2023 Jigawa State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Jigawa State, concurrent with elections to the Jigawa State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was later scheduled to hold three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2023 Kaduna State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kaduna State, concurrent with elections to the Kaduna State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

HON. Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar NPOM, LLB, BL is a Nigerian lawyer and current serving chief judge of Katsina State from 2018. He administered the oath of office to the former governor of Katsina State Rt. Hon. Alh. Aminu Bello Masari. He was the chairman of the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal who declared Hajiya Aisha Jummai Alhassan of the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner of the controversial governorship election, 2015 in Taraba State.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Taraba State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Taraba State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

David Jimkuta is a Nigerian politician who has served as the senator representing the Taraba South senatorial district since 2023. He was elected in the 2023 Nigerian Senate elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. He defeated the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, incumbent governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku.

Tafarki Agbadu Eneme is a Nigerian politician, and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. He is a Member in the State House of Assembly, representing Kurmi Constituency, Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly, and Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Urban Development and Forestry Potentials.

Sani Abubakar Danladi is a Nigerian politician who served as the senator representing the Taraba North senatorial district from 2015 to 2017. He previously served as the acting governor of Taraba State from 2014 to 2015, and twice as deputy governor of Taraba State from 2007 to 2012, and from 2014 to 2015.
