Jolly Tavoro Nyame (born 25 December 1955) is a Nigerian politician who served as the governor of Taraba State from 1999 to 2007. He previously served as governor from 1992 to 1993 during the short lived third republic. [1]

Early life

Nyame was born on 25 December 1955 in Zing in present-day Taraba State to Christian parents. In line with his Christian faith, he took up a vocation in priesthood and was ordained a Reverend in the United Methodist Church of Nigeria. [1]

Political life

Nyame joined politics in 1991, contested for governor of Taraba state in 1992 and won. His term as governor in 1993 was short-lived due to the military takeover of power. [1]

In 1999, Nyame contested as a governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and won. He was also re-elected in 2003, making him the only individual to have won three governorship elections in Taraba state. [1]

Criminal charges

Upon leaving office in 2007, Nyame was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a fraud of ₦1.64 billion in a forty-one count charge of Fraud. [1]

In 2007, Nyame admitted to misappropriating ₦180 million out of ₦250 million meant for stationery in Taraba state and offered to return the same. [1] [2]

Conviction

On 30 May 2018, Nyame was convicted by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, under the ruling of Justice Adebukola Banjoko for the charges against him. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and was asked to refund the money he diverted. [1] [3]

In November 2018, The Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed his conviction on 29 counts. The Appellate court however reviewed the sentences imposed by the trial court and sentenced him to 5 separate 12 year term of imprisonment which were to run concurrently instead of the initial 14 year Jail term and ordered him to pay a fine of ₦185 million. [4] On 7 February 2020, the Supreme Court affirmed the 12 year jail term Judgment and set aside the fines imposed on him by the courts on the grounds that they were outrageous and done without any prompting. [5]

Pardon

On 14 April 2022, the federal government of Nigeria granted Nyame a presidential pardon. The action was criticised by civil society organisations and the general public. [6] [7]

Nyame is married to Priscilla J. T. Nyame.

General elections were held in Nigeria on 23 February 2019 to elect the President, Vice President, House of Representatives and the Senate. The elections had initially been scheduled for 16 February, but the Electoral Commission postponed the vote by a week at 03:00 on the original polling day, citing logistical challenges in getting electoral materials to polling stations on time. The 2019 Taraba State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. Incumbent People's Democratic Party Governor Darius Ishaku won re-election for a second term in 12 local government areas, defeating former acting governor and All Progressives Congress's Sani Danladi who won in the remaining four with a margin of 157,69[8] votes, and several minor party candidates.

The 2015 Benue State gubernatorial election was the eighth gubernatorial election of Benue State. Held on April 11, 2015, the All Progressives Congress nominee Samuel Ortom won the election, defeating Terhemen Tarzoor of the People's Democratic Party.

The 2015 Ebonyi State gubernatorial election was the 5th gubernatorial election of Ebonyi State. Held on April 11, 2015, the People's Democratic Party nominee Dave Umahi won the election, defeating Edward Nkwegu of the Labour Party.

The 2003 Taraba State gubernatorial election occurred on April 19, 2003. PDP candidate Jolly Nyame won the election, defeating ANPP Abubakar Saad and other 6 candidates.

The 2023 Taraba State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Taraba State, concurrent with elections to the Taraba State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Darius Ishaku is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

On July 5, 2022, the Islamic State launched a coordinated attack on Kuje prison, near the Nigerian capital of Abuja. The attack killed five people and freed 879 inmates, although almost half were recaptured in the following days.
