Ibrahim Idris ( // ( Loudspeaker.svg listen ); born 1949) [1] is a Nigeria politician and businessman who served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2011. [2] He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). [3] Idris was succeeded by his brother-in-law Captain Idris Wada, who won election in December 2011 and took office in January 2012. [4]

Background

Ibrahim Idris was born in 1949 at Idah town, Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State. He started his primary education in 1954 in Onitsha, Anambra State. In 1962, he moved to Kano, where he completed his primary education in 1963. He moved to Buguma in Rivers State where he enrolled in King's Commercial College in 1964. He holds a bachelor's degree from University of Abuja [3]

After leaving school he launched the Ibro Trading Company, with interests in construction, furniture making, hotels and other activities. In 1970, he moved to Sokoto where he set up the Ibrahim Furniture Factory, the largest in Sokoto State, and later the Ibro Hotel, the first 3-star hotel in the old Sokoto State. [3]

Idris, an Igala, emerged PDP governorship candidate for Kogi State in the 2003 Kogi State gubernatorial election after defeating an Ebira leader, Senator Ahmed Tijani Ahmed at the primaries of then ruling party in Nigeria at the federal level. He was elected governor of Kogi State on the PDP platform in April 2003, after beating then governor Prince Abubakar Audu of the All People's Party, APP. Ibrahim assumed office on 29 May 2003. [5]

Idris was re-elected in April 2007, but was later nullified on the grounds that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had wrongly excluded the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate Abubakar Audu from 14 April 2007 governorship poll. On 6 February 2008, the Court of Appeal upheld this ruling and ordered a new election to be held within three months. President Umaru Yar'Adua ordered the Speaker of the House of Assembly to take over as acting governor. [6]

In a repeat election held on March 29, 2008, Idris was returned as the Governor of Kogi State. His opponent, Abubakar Audu, challenged the result of the by-election on the basis of massive electoral fraud including violence and theft of ballot boxes. [7]

On the October 29, 2006 plane crash, his 3 daughters survived the accident along with six other people. About this he claimed: 'This is a superlative show of mercy to me and my family by Almighty Allah. I lack words to express my gratitude to the Almighty Creator for this favour. I can only call on Nigerians and indeed humanity in general to join me in thanksgiving for His benevolence'. [8]

Idris was a spouse to Zainab Ibrahim Idris who died on 31 May 2014 from cancer related ailment. [9] [10]

The 2015 Kogi State Gubernatorial election was held on 21 November 2015 to elect a governor for Kogi State. The last Kogi state gubernatorial election was held in 2011. The incumbent governor, Captain Idris Wada, ran for re-election against the former governor, Prince Abubakar Audu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. Kogi State has a different governorship election calendar from other states of the Nigerian Federation. This happened in 2007, when the Appeal Court affirmed annulment of the election of the incumbent, Ibrahim Idris for electoral irregularities and ordered a fresh election in a case filed by Abubakar Audu.

Idris Ichala Wadalisten is a Nigerian retired pilot and politician. On 9 December 2011, he was elected as the 3rd governor of Kogi State under the platform of People's Democratic Party. Idris was however succeeded by Yahaya Bello on 27 January 2016 after losing his re-election bid in the 2015 Kogi State gubernatorial election.

The 2019 Kogi State gubernatorial election occurred on 16 November 2019. Incumbent APC Governor Yahaya Bello won re-election for a second term, defeating PDP Musa Wada and several minor party candidates.

The 2019 Sokoto State gubernatorial election occurred in Nigeria on March 9, 2019. Incumbent Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal won re-election for a second term, defeating Ahmad Aliyu of the APC and several minor party candidates.

The 2019 Zamfara State gubernatorial election occurred on 9 March 2019. APC's Mukhtar Shehu Idris polled 67.41% of the total popular votes, defeating PDP's Bello Matawalle who got 23.89% of the total votes and trailed behind by a margin of 345,089 votes, and several minor party candidates. APC swept the entire 14 LGAs of the state, winning in all. It was, however, Matawalle, who was later declared winner by the INEC and sworn in as governor after the verdict of the Supreme Court, which declared Idris' votes as 'wasted'.

The 2011 Kogi State gubernatorial election was the 5th gubernatorial election of Kogi State, Nigeria. Held on December 3, 2011, the People's Democratic Party nominee Idris Wada won the election, defeating Abubakar Audu of the Action Congress of Nigeria.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

The 2023 Kogi State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 November 2023 to elect the Governor of Kogi State. Incumbent APC Governor Yahaya Bello is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term. The primaries are scheduled for between 27 March and 17 April 2022.

The 2023 Sokoto State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Sokoto State, concurrent with elections to the Sokoto State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Sokoto State was held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Sokoto State. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North, Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.
