Barewa College is a college in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. Founded in 1921 by British Governor General Hugh Clifford, it was originally known as Katsina College. It switched its name to Kaduna College in 1938 and to Government College, Zaria in 1949 before settling on Barewa College. It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most-celebrated post-primary schools there up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region who attended and counts among its alumni include Tafawa Balewa who was Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966, four heads of state of Nigeria. The school is located along Gaskiya road in the Tukur -Tukur area of Zaria.

Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa was a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Kaduna State from 2010 to 2012. He was appointed deputy governor in July 2005, and returned as deputy governor in the April 2007 elections. He was sworn in as governor on 20 May 2010, replacing former governor Namadi Sambo who had been sworn in as vice president the day before. Yakowa successfully ran for election as Kaduna Governor in the 26 April 2011 polls.

Aruwa sat on several senate committees and opposed the privatization of public enterprises. He was re-elected in 2003 as a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the successor to the APP. He was involved in a dispute over committee appointments, claiming unfair play by the senate leadership. Aruwa's name was dropped from the ANPP party list for the 2007 election.
