Malam Yahaya Abdulkarim was elected governor of Sokoto State, Nigeria between January 1992 and November 1993, during General Ibrahim Babangida's attempted transition to democracy. [1] After the return to democracy in 1999, he became a power in the Zamfara State branch of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), and served for a while in the cabinet of president Olusegun Obasanjo. Early career

Yahaya Abdulkarim was born on 21 August 1944 in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State. [3] His father was a Native Authority officer. [4] He joined the civil service of the North-Western State as a teacher, and held various positions before retiring in 1989 as Director-General in the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning of Sokoto State. [3]

Governor of Sokoto State

Abdulkarim was elected governor of Sokoto State, Nigeria in January 1992, representing the National Republican Convention (NRC). He was forced out of office in November 1993 by the military regime of General Sani Abacha. [1] During his period of office, he feuded with Attahiru Bafarawa, the NRC party chairman in the state. The feud persisted, and when Bafarawa became Governor of Sokoto State in 1999, he followed a policy of neglecting all roads and buildings built by the Abdulkarim administration. [5] In 1992, Abdulkarim signed the bill establishing the Talata Mafara Polytechnic, later renamed the Abdu Gusau Polytechnic. [6]

Later career

In September 2002, Abdulkarim was appointed to a sub-committee of the Niger Delta Development Commission to monitor a multi-billion naira developmental project that had been launched in the nine oil-producing states. [7]

Abdulkarim was appointed Minister of State for Works in president Olusegun Obasanjo's cabinet in July 2005. [8] He replaced Alhaji Saleh Shehu in this position. [9] In November 2006, he unfolded plans for an extensive and accelerated roads recovery programme to target the Christmas season. [10] When the Minister of Works, Adeseye Ogunlewe, was dismissed in March 2006, he was promoted to Minister of Works.[ citation needed ] He was later subject to a Senate inquiry into his conduct while in this office. He was an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Zamfara State on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform in the April 2007 elections. [12] By 2007, the Zamfara State PDP had split into two factions, one led by Abdulkarim and the other by former National Security Adviser, General Aliyu Gusau. In March 2008, Abdulkarim led a delegation from Zamfara to ask the PDP national chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, to prevent Gusau from interfering in the party's affairs. [2]

In October 2008, it was reported that he was being considered for a ministerial position in the cabinet of president Umaru Yar'Adua. [13]

Alhaji Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi was a Nigerian politician who was the Governor of Kano State during the Nigerian Second Republic. He also served as Federal Minister of Communications from 1993 to o1998 during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

Talata Mafara LGA and town in Zamfara State, Nigeria

Talata Mafara is a Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Talata Mafara, about 15 km from the Bakolori Dam on the Sokoto River12°34′00″N6°04′00″E. The town lies on the southern edge of the major irrigation project fed by the dam. The town is the birthplace of Yahaya Abdulkarim, governor of Sokoto State from January 1992 to November 1993.

Colonel Mohammed Bello Kaliel (RTD) was the first Governor of Bauchi State, Nigeria after it was created on 3 February 1976 when North-Eastern State was divided into Bauchi, Borno, and Gongola states, during the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo. He held office until July 1978.

Haliru Mohammed Bello is a Nigerian politician. He was trained in veterinary medicine. He held various administrative positions under the military governments before 1999. He was Minister of Communications from June 2001 to May 2003. After he left office, he was indicted in a bribery scandal involving the German telecom company Siemens AG.

Mohammed Arzika was appointed Nigerian Minister of Communications from June 1999 to June 2001 in the cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo. He died after a brief illness on 9 June 2015.

Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, CFR was appointed Nigerian Minister of Water Resources in a June 2001 reshuffle of the cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo. He was later appointed President of the African Ministerial Council On Water (AMCOW). Shagari held office until January 2007 when he left to compete for Deputy Governor of Sokoto State. He took office on 29 May 1999. He was re-elected on the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) platform in 2003 to a second term of four years.

Alhaji Abdul'aziz Abubakar Yari is a Nigerian politician who was elected Governor of Zamfara State, Nigeria in the 26 April 2011 national elections, running on the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) platform following the merger of the ANPP and several other opposition parties into the now-governing All Progressives Congress, Mr. Yari became a member of the All Progressives Congress.

Abdu Gusau Polytechnic is a State government polytechnic located in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State, Nigeria.

Abdu Gusau, Garkuwan Sokoto, MBE, OON, was a Nigerian civil engineer, and statesman who served as the Garkuwa of Sokoto until his death in 1994. He was the Chief estate engineer of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1967 to 1972 where he was in charge of estates, which included buildings, the campus road network and the water supply. Gusau also served as a principal engineer with Taylor Woodrow of London where he worked on building London Heathrow's airport terminal.
