Alhaji Muhammadu Shehu Kangiwa was the first elected civilian governor of Sokoto State,Nigeria in the short-lived Nigerian Second Republic,holding office from October 1979 to November 1981. He represented the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). [1] He was a popular governor,providing water,health care,agricultural input,education at all levels and transparent government. [2]
The Bakolori irrigation project,started by the previous military government,had displaced many peasant farmers without providing land or compensation. Confronted by demonstrators in November 1979,Kangiwa promised to address all their grievances. However,on 28 April 1980 police moved in on unarmed demonstrators and shot dead over 380 people. The government played down the incident,claiming only 25 had died. [3] He imprisoned Sheikh Zakzaky of the Islamic movement in Nigeria,along with some of his close disciples,and was said to have intended to execute him. [4]
In 1981,he increased the number of Local Government Areas in the state from 19 to 32. However his successor Colonel Garba Duba reversed this measure in 1984. [5]
He died in November 1981,falling from a horse while playing polo in the 1981 edition of the Georgian League. In 1982 Unisteel Ltd. presented The Shehu Kangiwa Cup in his memory,and the cup is now sponsored by Sokoto State Government. [6]

After the successful revolution,the "Jama'a" gave him the title Amir al-Mu'minin. He rejected the throne and continued calling to Islam.

The Bakolori Dam is in Sokoto State in northwest Nigeria. It was completed in 1978 and its reservoir filled by 1981. It is a major reservoir on the Sokoto River,a tributary of the Rima River,which in turn feeds the Niger River. Water from the dam supplies the Bakolori Irrigation Project.

The 2023 Sokoto State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Sokoto State,concurrent with elections to the Sokoto State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.
The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Sokoto State was held on February 23,2019,to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Sokoto State. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North,Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.
The Shehu Shagari College of Education is a state government higher education institution located in Sokoto,Sokoto State,Nigeria. It is affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University and Usmanu Danfodiyo University for its degree programmes. The current Provost is Wadata Hakimi.
