The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is an agency of the Government of New South Wales responsible for eliminating and investigating corrupt activities and enhancing the integrity of the state's public administration. The commission was established in 1989,pursuant to the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act,1988 (NSW),modeled after the ICAC in Hong Kong.
The City of Canterbury was a local government area in the Inner South-West region of Sydney,New South Wales,Australia. Gladys Berejiklian is an Australian businesswoman and former politician who served as the 45th premier of New South Wales and the leader of the New South Wales division of the Liberal Party from 2017 to 2021. Berejiklian currently works as an executive for the telecommunications company Optus.
Christopher "Chris" Peter Hartcher is an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 2015,representing the electorates of Gosford (1988–2007) and Terrigal (2007–2015). He represented the Liberal Party for most of his career,serving as its deputy state leader from 2002 to 2003,and in the O'Farrell Ministry as Minister for Resources and Energy,Special Minister of State and Minister for the Central Coast. In 2013,he resigned to sit as an independent following his implication in an ongoing Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry,and retired at the 2015 state election.
Jodi Leyanne McKay is a former Australian politician who was the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of New South Wales from June 2019 until May 2021. She previously served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly,representing Strathfield for the Labor Party from 2015 to 2021. McKay also previously represented Newcastle for one term from 2007 until her defeat at the 2011 election. Between 2008 and 2011,McKay held a number of junior ministerial responsibilities in the Rees and Keneally governments,including serving as the Minister for the Hunter,Tourism,Small Business,Science and Medical Research,Commerce,and Women,and Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Cancer). On 17 October 2021,McKay announced she would resign from the parliament,which triggered a by-election in her seat of Strathfield. McKay subsequently became National Chair of the Australia India Business Council.
Michael Joseph Gallacher,an Australian politician,was the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Vice-President of the Executive Council in the O'Farrell government and Baird government from 2011 to 2014;the Minister for the Central Coast from December 2013 to May 2014;and the Minister for Industrial Relations in the Baird government from April to May 2014. Gallacher has been a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 1996. He was the Minister for the Hunter between 2011 and 2014.
Donald Thomas Harwin is an Australian politician. He was the New South Wales Special Minister of State and the Minister for the Public Service and Employee Relations,Aboriginal Affairs,and the Arts in the second Berejiklian ministry since April 2019;and the Vice-President of the Executive Council,and the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council since January 2017 in the Berejiklian government. He briefly resigned from his roles with effect from 15 April 2020,however was reinstated on 3 July 2020.
Andrew Stuart Cornwell is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from the 2011 election until 2014,representing the electorate of Charlestown. He was elected as a Liberal Party candidate,and represented that party until 6 August 2014,when he moved to the parliamentary crossbench and sat as an independent after the Independent Commission Against Corruption heard evidence that Cornwell may have breached electoral funding laws. After earlier announcing that would not contest his seat at the next state election,on 12 August 2014 Cornwell resigned from parliament with immediate effect triggering the 2014 Charlestown by-election.
Giovanni Domenic "John" Barilaro is an Australian former politician who served as the 18th deputy premier of New South Wales and the leader of the New South Wales division of the National Party from 2016 to 2021. He was the Minister for Regional New South Wales,Industry and Trade in the second Berejiklian ministry from April 2019,and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing the electoral district of Monaro since 2011 until his resignation in October 2021.
Paul Lawrence Toole is an Australian politician. Toole was the Deputy Premier of New South Wales from 2021 to 2023,and the leader of the New South Wales Nationals from October 2021 to May 2023.
Anthony John Sidoti is an independent Australian politician who was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Drummoyne since 2011. He was a member of the Liberal Party,but moved to the crossbench as an independent in March 2021,following the announcement of a public inquiry into his property dealings by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).
Geoffrey Lee is a former Australian politician. He served as the Minister for Corrections in the second Perrottet ministry between December 2021 and March 2023. He has previously served as the Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education in the second Berejiklian and Perrottet ministries between April 2019 and December 2021. Lee was also a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing Parramatta for the Liberal Party since 2011 until his retirement in 2023.
Matthew John Kean is an Australian politician,who was the Treasurer of New South Wales in the second Perrottet ministry of New South Wales between October 2021 and March 2023. He was also the Minister for Energy between April 2019 and March 2023 and was also the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party from August 2022 till March 2023. He has been Shadow Minister for Health since 2023 and has represented Hornsby for the party in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly since 2011.
Corruption can take many forms,and can distort how public policy is made or implemented. This article discusses the responsibilities of the various agencies involved in combating corruption in Australia. While Australia is a wealthy democracy,over the decade since 2012,Australia's ranking in the Corruption Perceptions Index from Transparency International has slipped from 7th place in 2012 to 13th in 2022,where the country ranked first is perceived to have the most honest public sector. Additionally,there is a public perception that corruption in Australia is increasing. All states have broad-based anti-corruption agencies,and a national anti-corruption commission has been operational since July 2023.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Daryl Maguire,a Liberal-turned-independent. Maguire resigned from Parliament the previous month after admitting to a corruption inquiry that he sought payment over a property deal.
The 2023 New South Wales state election was held on 25 March 2023 to elect the 58th Parliament of New South Wales,including all 93 seats in the Legislative Assembly and 21 of the 42 seats in the Legislative Council. The election was conducted by the New South Wales Electoral Commission (NSWEC).
The Second Berejiklian ministry was the 97th ministry of the Government of New South Wales,and was led by Gladys Berejiklian,the state's 45th Premier. It was the second and subsequent of two occasions that Berejiklian served as Premier.
The 2021 Liberal Party of Australia leadership election was a leadership vote held on 5 October 2021 to elect a new leader of the New South Wales Division of the Liberal Party of Australia and subsequently the Premier of New South Wales,following the resignation of Gladys Berejiklian. The election was conducted among the Liberal Party members of the Parliament of New South Wales and contested between Dominic Perrottet and Rob Stokes. Perrottet won the election 39 votes to 5. Stuart Ayres was elected unopposed as deputy party leader.
